Intro

Life is a resource. Use it wisely. This deck loses a lot of life in exchange for low-cost or early power. Card draw in black is so necessary, therefore Vilis, Broker of Blood is my preferred commander.

Phylactery

In a deck where life loss is encouraged, we need ways to survive. These cards not only keep us alive, but make our commander and entire deck twice as scary. If these ever get removed, cast Stunning Reversal to stay in the game and get some cards

Lich's Mastery

Infinite Combo

You can't have a mono-black EDH deck without some game-winning combos

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Triskelion - Instant death

Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond - Gain life or deal damage to melt opponents

Bitterblossom + Contamination - Complete mana lock-out vs non-black decks

Life Loss (Card Draw)

Promise of Power - Drawing 10 cards with Vilis out is good enough, but the Entwine ability adds insult to injury

Sign in Blood and Night's Whisper - Pretty much staples for this deck

Doom Whisperer - Deck fixing with a life cost

K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth - Life for Mana makes all black spells cost less and allows card draw in addition to casting those spells with Vilis

Ad Nauseam - Can go infinite with a Phylactery and draws our deck quickly with Vilis

Hatred - Pay as much life (Draw as many cards) as possible in addition to buffing Vilis for potential lethal flying damage

Necropotence - A staple in black made better by Vilis by immediately drawing you cards as you pay the life cost

Phyrexian Arena - Draw a possible 2 cards on upkeep

Bolas's Citadel - Acceleration at the cost of life (card draw) with a powerful burn ability

Alhammarret's Archive - Double card draw as well as life gain

The Immortal Sun - Extra draw with some ramp and creature boosting as well as Planeswalker hate

Life Gain

Since this deck burns through a lot of life, a good amount of life gain is necessary

Venser's Journal - Chances are there will always be some cards in hand so this is a nice little bit of life every turn. In addition, it removes hand size limitations

Whip of Erebos - Vilis with lifelink alone is enough to add this, but extra recursion never hurt

Dread Presence - Opponent damage and life gain for landfall, alternatively, draw cards

Vault Skirge - An early lifelink flyer with Phyrexian mana for potential card draw

Vampire Nighthawk - Delicious

Exquisite Blood - In addition to being a combo piece, it acts as amazing life gain

Ramp

(Excluding the Twelve artifact ramp spells)

Cabal Coffers + Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth with Deserted Temple for all of the black mana

Bubbling Muck - Universal swamp doubling for

Crypt Ghast and Nirkana Revenant - More swamp doubling

Dark Ritual and Cabal Ritual - Instant speed ramp

Tutor

Find just what is needed

Demonic Tutor - Duh

Scheming Symmetry - Getting the final combo piece is probably better than whatever an opponent will pull

Diabolic Revelation - Grab as many combo pieces as possible

Vampiric Tutor - With Vilis out this draws into the card that it tutored and an additional card

Removal

Damnation, In Garruk's Wake and Toxic Deluge - Board Wipe

Hero's Downfall, Snuff Out, Scour from Existence and Font of Agonies - Targeted Removal

Recursion

Sheoldred, Whispering One - Recursion on a stick with a side of removal

Reanimate - Massive value with Vilis in play

Yawgmoth's Will - Great recursion with the amount of ramp in this deck

Animate Dead

Alternate Win-Con

Psychosis Crawler - Because of the sheer amount of draw due to Vilis' passive, this can win the game. Combo those two with Doom Whisperer to win the game (if life total permits and/or Alhammarret's Archive is in play)

Repay in Kind - This deck likes to get to really low life totals (often 0) so this card will win the game
