It's token time!

This is my Trostani, Selesnya's Voice EDH deck. The goal is to populate lots of tokens, especially large tokens, in order to gain life with Trostani and amass a token armada. (The dream, of course, is to get hold of a huge token with power and toughness equal to my humongous life total or fairly close and populate the crap out of it, and there are a couple of ways in this deck to do that.) This is aided by doubling enchantments such as Doubling Season and Parallel Lives and Rhys the Redeemed 's token doubling ability. I especially like shenanigans involving populating tokens of nontoken cards, or making permanent token copies of temporary tokens (i.e., populating Mimic Vat tokens).

Win conditions involve Serra Avatar or her token copies (thanks to Mimic Vat and others); Avenger of Zendikar ; Archangel of Thune ; Storm Herd ; Ajani Goldmane 's or Garruk, Primal Hunter 's ultimates; or alternately, a billion tokens to the face (most likely Nacatl War-Pride tokens). Alternately, if turning creatures sideways isn't working so well, Aetherflux Reservoir and Felidar Sovereign allow to use all that life you've gained to send damage directly to your opponents' faces or just win, respectively.

I'm definitely interested in improving this deck. Being that I'm in white/green, a major limitation to deal with is card draw; I've included a ton to help with that, such as Well of Lost Dreams and Elemental Bond , among others, but I would definitely be curious about other useful varieties of card draw that would work well in here. I'm also worried that I'm a little light on removal - the "kill everything but tokens" crowd is an exclusive one, with only Hour of Reckoning and Elspeth Tirel in this deck. This deck is quite vulnerable to opposing wrath effects in the absence of Avacyn, Angel of Hope or one of the instants that makes my tokens indestructible ( Heroic Intervention , Make a Stand , or the original Rootborn Defenses ); I've added Kamahl, Fist of Krosa to discourage token-destroying wraths, but other ways to forestall this would be nice. :)

Currently considering adding to maindeck:

  • Giant Adephage
  • Throne of the God-Pharaoh (could be useful or less so, depending on whether I'm holding back or going for a full-out attack; it is a non-bo with Intangible Virtue , however, but definitely something I would like to try out)
  • Wingmate Roc (not entirely sure of its utility, since it is so dependent on attacking and depending on my board state I may try to hold off on that until I have a noticeable advantage, but the token creation and lifegain-on-attack are very in-line with this deck's game plan)

Currently definitely planning on adding to maindeck the second I get a copy:

  • Tendershoot Dryad (a Saproling every turn, including other players', and an anthem for them if I ever control ten or more permanents, which if this deck is running as intended is cake? YES PLEASE)

List of tokens and their producers:

...plus Nacatl War-Pride copies and tokens of whatever is copied by Mimic Vat or Mirrorpool .

Finally, a list of key combos/synergies:

  • Mimic Vat + Trostani, Selesnya's Voice : Trostani here stands in for any populate effect or creature. While the tokens created with Mimic Vat all vanish at end of turn, populated copies of those tokens do not. Exile your opponents' best creatures when they die, using the Vat, and copy them endlessly! (This also works with Seance , which was in a previous version of this deck but got cut.)

  • Illusionist's Bracers + Rhys the Redeemed : Doubling up the token-doubling effect? More than double the fun, especially with Doubling Season and other token-doublers out. You may need to get a calculator out to figure out how many tokens/how much life you get, though.

  • Hour of Reckoning + Kamahl, Fist of Krosa and Elspeth Tirel + Kamahl, Fist of Krosa : Just as you can use Kamahl to discourage enemy wraths, so you can use them to turn your own nontoken-destroying wraths into full-on land destruction if someone pisses you off enough. Animate their lands just before wrathing and see how they like you now! (Warning: may lose friends!)

  • Nacatl War-Pride + Parallel Lives , Doubling Season + Nacatl War-Pride , Anointed Procession + Nacatl War-Pride : A single token doubler means Nacatl War-Pride creates twice as many tokens as your opponent has defenders, each of which can only be blocked by one creature...meaning half of them will get through to deal their damage.

  • Nacatl War-Pride + Trostani, Selesnya's Voice : Again, Trostani here stands in for anything with populate. War-Pride tokens go away at the end of the turn; however, any populated copies do not. If you can manage to populate a permanent copy for each of your opponents, attacking with them can be fairly close to a board wipe unless your opponents have some seriously beefy creatures that can withstand the War-Prides. Combine this with the above-mentioned token doubler synergy, and opponents with any kind of board presence at all will likely be wiped out.

  • Ajani Goldmane + Trostani, Selesnya's Voice , Storm Herd + Trostani, Selesnya's Voice , Phyrexian Processor + Trostani, Selesnya's Voice : Great ways to gain insane amounts of life, a couple of which also give you enormous tokens. Every time you populate Ajani's ult token, your life total doubles (as do those tokens' P/T). Similarly, Storm Herd pumps out 1/1 Pegasus tokens equal to your life, doubling it at the very least. Finally, Phyrexian Processor lets you pay any amount of life to be able to create tokens that size (I tend to go for approximately half my life); creating just one token with Trostani out brings you back up to where you were before, and creating/populating will get you up there pretty fast. Having out P/T-increasing anthem-style effects or lifegain-increasing effects (like Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite ) or Rhox Faithmender just makes this even better.

Updates Add

Not loving Verdant Sun's Avatar, as expected, so I've put Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage back in its place. I had this in the deck quite a few versions ago, and I took it out because the abilities are very expensive for what they are; however, I've been debating putting it back in ever since because having a token creator and populator in one is not to be underestimated, as there have been multiple occasions where I had one or more sources of populate but no tokens to do so with. Centaur tokens are also beefier than some of the others this could be pumping out, which makes it better. We'll see how well it works this go-round!
