Tribal Support in Pauper (& Pauper EDH)

The cards in this list will provide additional benefits if you control specific creatures with the appropriate subtype. In other words, this is a list of cards that will provide extra value if you play a specific tribe (soldiers, merfolk, zombies, goblins, elves, etc.) This list is still under construction, so if you know of a card you think should be on this list but isn't, please check the "List Criteria" then comment below.

  1. This is a list of cards for the PAUPER format, and also for PDH (Pauper EDH/Commander), meaning all cards here must have been printed/released as a Common at least once.
  2. This is meant to be a comprehensive list, not an optimized one. I included literally everything I could find that fit the criteria for this list. This is because I know for a fact that I am not the only person who looks at "unplayable" cards as a challenge, rather than a waste of cardboard and ink. I want to inform you, not make decisions for you, so you'll have to use your own judgment and common sense when sorting through this list. Not all of these cards will be worth casting, and fewer still will help you make a Tier 1 deck... but most of them look really fun to play, and to me, that's what Magic, pauper and this list are all about. And also EDH. EDH is really fun, too. =]
This list DOES contain:

  • Cards that synergize with specific creature subtypes, such as knight, merfolk, goblin, zombie, dragon, etc.
  • Cards that will synergize with literally ANY changeling.
  • Tribal synergies and tribal lord-effects.
  • Cards that turn other creatures/permanents into a "tribal" subtype, such as Dub.
  • All cards with the keyword Changeling.

This list DOES NOT contain:

  • Cards that synergize with specific card supertypes, such as Snow or Legendary.
  • Cards that synergize with specific card types, such as artifacts or enchantments.
  • Cards that synergize with creature-based abilities, such as flying and trample.
  • Cards that create tribal tokens (of a specific tribal subtype), but do not otherwise care if you are playing that tribe or not, such as Martyr of Dusk.
To keep this list concise and focused, mechanics and abilities with related functions have also been omitted, unless there are only a small amount, such as with Prowl, Amplify and Wizardcycling. Instead, follow the links below to lists of these cards.

The Maybeboard contains the "reverse" of this list, meaning your opponent has to have a creature of a specific subtype in order to gain the most value. If they do, you get a bonus of some sort. Cards like this rarely see play because their functionality is far too narrow, but because I'm a completionist they are included here. Who knows, maybe one day a Spirits-tribal, or Wall-tribal list will dominate the Pauper meta and this list will really pay off.

Beyond the cards in the list above--some of which can turn creatures into specific creature subtypes--there are several "universal" cards in pauper that can actually force this effect. They are discussed in more depth below in the next section.

Some tribes have enough tech and support to fill a whole deck, like Goblins and Spirits. Other, smaller tribes, like Aurochs and Golems, need a little help filling out a whole deck. Or maybe you just want to try take one of the best, most supported tribes, and squeeze as much value out of them as you can, like with competitive Elf decks. For those of you looking for that extra "something," check out the Changelings tribe above, as well as the various "universal" tech pieces below.
