Fortified Area

Enchantment

Wall creatures you control get +1/+0 and have banding.

Updates!

In: Eerie Interlude and Wall of Stolen Identity

Fortified Area and Rolling Stones

Rolling Stones is too outdated and relies on Assault Formation or Huatli, the Sun's Heart in order to work, which is too inconsistent for me. Fortified Area is good, but I realize in my playgroup I need more protection from wrath spells, which Eerie Interlude will provide.

Wall of Stolen Identity is a neat control spell I didn't realize existed - would like to give it a try!

amarthaler The oracle text on gatherer for Fortified Area says "Wall creatures you control..." and not "Creatures you control with defender..." I know wall used to be the old name before the keyword defender was introduced. However some creatures have defender without being a wall. For instance Walking Bulwark. I am not sure if Fortified Area effects Walking Bulwark. Next time I get a chance I'll ask a mtg judge about this.

I apologize about Concerted Effort. I really misread that card. That is much better then I thought it was especially with Arcades having flying and vigilance!

@ amarthaler Thank you for the compliment and checking out my list. I took a look at your list it also looks like a lot of fun.

I recently built the deck so I haven't done much playtesting yet. I am not sure what cards I need to cut to add other cards so all suggestions are welcome.

I like Robe of Stars, Treefolk Umbra, and Stoneskin. I'll try and work them in at some point.

Glaring Spotlight strikes me as a worse Akroma's Will but I might give it a go. I wish Fortified Area was errata to say defender and not just wall. Concerted Effort is too group hug for my tastes.

Great build! Here's some of my personal favorites in my Wall Tribal deck:

Highly recommend Robe of Stars and/or Treefolk Umbra to keep Arcades safe from wipes.

Stoneskin is a sneaky punisher, as well as Glaring Spotlight for a fun finisher!

Fortified Area is just plain fun as is Concerted Effort.

Out: Reconnaissance

In: Fortified Area

Reconnaissance, although a very strong card, doesn't seem as useful in this deck compared to others. The Banding effect from Fortified Area will help protect multiple attackers while still dealing damage.

Everyone loves Bureaucracy! I finally got this one sleeved up - please let me know if you have some bureaucratic favorites that I haven’t included. I have a stack of cards that I had to cut, but I may have missed some somewhere. I had initially intended to have Castle and Fortified Area and a bunch of walls, but the walls never had good enough themes for my liking. Things like Wall of Light and Angelic Wall are just too fantastical for the bureaucratic feel I was shooting for. Alabaster Wall and Steel Wall were the only two that really stuck. Anyways, let me know if you have any recommendations! The Carrier Pigeons are probably demanding a second chance at making the cut lol.

The biggest (and probably only) advantage of the banding mechanic is that you are the one to decide how damage is spread out to your creatures when attacking. This can be leveraged.

Deftblade Elite and a bunch of banders means that you can not only force a creature to block your band, but you can prevent all combat damage to your creatures by moving it all to the Deftblade once you arrange combat damage.

Similarly, any creatures with protection are pretty strong. Guardian of the Guildpact comes to mind. You could also go with high-toughness creatures to soak up the damage for the team. Benalish Infantry and Shield Bearer are examples of good strategic use of banding creatures. You'll notice a lot of banding creatures have high toughness or first strike for these reasons.

Other than that... Wow. Unless you find a way to give your creatures trample, you're still dealing with all the drawbacks of banding.

With that in mind, I think you'll have a hard time winning using 8 walls. There's not much reason to play defensive banding creatures, honestly. If you want to run walls, well... Fortified Area? If not, there are lots of other banding creatures to choose from.

Have you considered any combination of Fortified Area and Rolling Stones? Both of these cards would be a boon for your walls.

The Birth of Meletis will gain you a Plains, a Wall and 2 life.

Other cheap Walls you may wish to consider are Shifting Wall, Wall of Glare, Wall of Hope, Wall of Kelp, Wall of Resistance, Wall of Runes, and Wall of Tears.

I hope this helps, thank you for reading me out. Happy Hunting!
