JundSka

JundSka

Jeska Jund Discord

Hello, thank you for taking the time to read this primer. This deck is called "JundSka" and it is an adaptive competitive EDH / Commander deck utilizing the partner duo of Ikra Shidiqi, the Usurper and Jeska, Thrice Reborn.
This is a combo deck revolved around using Jeska as the finisher. The methods to achieve a win are mainly Worldfire and Razaketh with Praetor's Grasp and Underworld Breach acting as sub win conditions.

The information here has been a labor-of-love for what I think is one of the coolest commander options to have been released recently. I sincerely hope you find the content below interesting.

Jeska Jund, "I Choose Violence" hatebears Jund Jeska, or their Magecraft version by ElderDrunkenHighlander are other variants to definitely check out.

Please excuse the abrupt cut during the Preator's Grasp section.

Released in Commander Legends, Jeska, Thrice Reborn is a very interesting partner commander.
She is a pinger in the command zone and becomes stronger and more combo worthy the more she (or Ikra) is cast.

Anytime a potential option for Jund springs up, the ever-lurking question is its comparison to Korvold, Fae-Cursed King, who has a couple of different deck types of his own and a good monopoly on the Jund cEDH market. I have no vendetta or ill will towards Korvold decks; I'm just trying to create a niche that I think is viable in its own right and can coincide with other Jund styles.

For Jeska's use, the pairing of Ikra Shidiqi, the Usurper seemed to make the most sense. Reyhan unfortunately has been nerfed a bit due to the commander death rule-change some months back.

The partners do not generate any inherent value themselves, so what's the strategy then?

As of its unbanning, Worldfire is an intriguing, all-in win condition to complement Jeska. After using floating mana to cast Jeska, her burn ability is immensely useful to take out opponents following Worldfire's resolution.

This deck initially started as a Food Chain variant but has since turned into a Worldfire deck. During the onset of deck building, I was looking around at other Jund lists and I noticed many themes that I felt could be traced back to Korvold and even Prossh, Skyraider of Kher Food Chain decks. This makes sense, it's really only ever been these two helming Jund decks. This is cEDH, many decks of the same colors will have similar cards; it’s the subtlety in playstyles that let the differences really shine. I started molding my personal list and trying things that I thought would play to the strengths of the partners, particularly Ikra.

Ikra Shidiqi, the Usurper's ability allows for increasing life-as-a-resource to fuel towards Ad Nauseam, Castle Locthwain, Doom Whisperer, Necropotence, Razaketh, the Foulblooded, Sylvan Library, and Treasonous Ogre.
Maximizing Ikra beats and life-as-a-resource is imperative since unlike Korvold, Fae-Cursed King, generating card advantage isn't inherent to the commanders.

Speaking of combat beats, this Naga wizard has a high toughness to block the many Tymna the Weavers that the deck is sure to face in a cEDH pod. As well, Ikra Shidiqi, the Usurper has menace to make sure she gets her combat beats in. Worst case scenario is using the partners to give Ikra a 3 turn combat beats clock.

Oh, by the way, as a partner commander set, there's only 98 cards mainboard, so you have ever-so slightly higher amounts of deck thinning from the get-go.

When it comes to opening hands, I believe an aggressive mulligan is the best approach.

Generally, when it comes to the mulligan, I prefer to seek out components for the fast-game (e.g., lots of fast mana, tutors, card advantage) during the first few initial mulligans. If it looks like that is not going to get me anywhere, I switch to the hand recoup approach.
The primary goal with a small initial hand is to seek out Wheel of Fortune or Wheel of Misfortune (perhaps even Valakut Awakening  ) as soon as possible, likely within the first three turns.
Through those cards, our hand will be refilled to seven and wheeling may disrupt everyone else's carefully planned mulligans.

Turboing out a commander and following it up with a Jeska's Will is another potential recoup method, though not foolproof in the slightest. Jeska's Will has the potential to net large amounts of red mana while the triple impulse-draw portion of the spell could be a boon, especially in combination with a one-drop topdecking tutor.

Fresh off the banlist, Worldfire is an intriguing new win condition to use in conjuction with Jeska's -x ability.

Quite simply, achieve the necessary 12+ mana to float in order to cast Worldfire and then top it off with a Jeska cast and -x activation (+).

Cheating the cost of Worldfire by using Mizzix's Mastery is a viable method of reducing the total baseline mana needed to win ().

Treasonous Ogre and Worldfire is a 2 card combo with more than 36 life and no prior casts of Jeska. Situations of 37+ life are not a guarantee but other spare mana can off set what is lacking from Ogre. Use Ikra to get life totals higher, she's really effective at 7 life per swing.

Requirements:

Steps:

  1. Razaketh, the Foulblooded is on the battlefield, along with another creature
  2. Sacrifice a creature to Razaketh and search for Life / Death (Skip to step 4 if using creatures instead of lands)
  3. Cast Life / Death and turn your lands into creatures
  4. Sacrifice a creature or land to search for Lion's Eye Diamond
  5. Cast LED, then sacrifice a creature or land to Razaketh to search for Eternal Witness while cracking LED in response to float
  6. Cast Eternal Witness and add LED to your hand from the graveyard from her ETB
  7. Cast LED, then sacrifice Eternal Witness to Razaketh and search for Reanimate while cracking LED in response to float
  8. Reanimate Eternal Witness and return LED to your hand from the graveyard on her ETB ( remaining)
  9. Cast LED, then sacrifice Eternal Witness to Razaketh and search for Animate Dead while cracking LED in response to float ( remaining)
  10. Cast Animate Dead targetting Eternal Witness, return LED to hand from the graveyard by Eternal Witness' ETB, cast LED and crack for ( remaining)
  11. Sacrifice Eternal Witness to Razaketh for Burnt Offering ( remaining)
  12. Sacrifice a creature or land to search for Worldfire ( remaining)
  13. Cast Burnt Offering, using Razaketh as the sacrifice to add 8x (13x mana floating)
  14. Cast Worldfire
  15. Cast Jeska and -x to ping the table for a win

Requirements:

  • 13/15+ life (line costs 12 or 14 life)
  • Opponents have 5+ artifacts/enchantments
  • 1 creature + 2 lands OR 2 creatures of some sort (line requires 2 non-Dockside Extortionist sacrifices)
  • (If using Life / Death)
  • Razaketh on the battlefield
  • Necessary components in the deck
  • No prior Jeska, Thrice Reborn casts (additional mana can offset this)

Steps: 1. Razaketh, the Foulblooded is on the battlefield, along with another creature 2. Sacrifice a creature to Razaketh and search for Life / Death (Skip to step 4 if using creatures instead of lands) 3. Cast Life / Death and turn your lands into creatures 4. Sacrifice a creature or land to search for Lion's Eye Diamond 1. Crack LED for 2. Tutor for Dockside Extortionist 3. Cast Dockside Extortionist and create 5 treasures ( + 5 treasures remaining) 4. Sacrifice Dockside Extortionist to Razaketh and tutor for Reanimate ( + 5 treasures remaining) 5. Cast Reanimate targeting Dockside Extortionist ( + 4 treasures remaining) 6. Dockside Extortionist will ETB and create 5 additional treasures ( + 9 treasures remaining) 7. Sacrifice Dockside Extortionist to Razaketh and tutor for Animate Dead/Dance of the Dead/Necromancy ( + 9 treasures remaining) 8. Cast Animate Dead/Dance of the Dead/Necromancy targeting Dockside Extortionist ( + 6/7 treasures remaining) 9. Dockside Extortionist will ETB and create 5 additional treasures ( + 11/12 treasures remaining) 10. Sacrifice Dockside Extortionist to Razaketh and tutor for Worldfire ( + 11/12 treasures remaining) 11. Float all mana from treasures and cast Worldfire (12-13 mana floating) 12. Cast Jeska and -x for a win

  • If Worldfire is already in the graveyard, tutoring for Mizzix's Mastery is a sufficient alternative that can be done in fewer steps.

  • Past in Flames may also be used in this case.
Another iteration of Dockside revivals (using Dance of the Dead or Life / Death after initially using Animate Dead) will result in 16 mana, enough to give Worldfire flashback and to cast Jeska thereafter.
If Past in Flames is also in the graveyard, this line will cost an additional to be supplied from elsewhere.

  8. Reanimate Eternal Witness and return Reanimate to your hand from the graveyard on her ETB ( remaining)
  9. Sacrifice Eternal Witness to Razaketh and search for Dark Ritual ( remaining)
  10. Reanimate Eternal Witness, return LED to your hand from the graveyard with Eternal Witness, cast Dark Ritual and LED ( remaining)
  11. Sacrifice Eternal Witness to Razaketh to search for Burnt Offering while cracking LED in response to float ( remaining)

  • The search for Reanimate in step 7 can be replaced with Animate Dead. For instance, perhaps Reanimate was used already.
During step 8, return Reanimate if possible. The line will result in 12 mana at step 13.
If not, use Life / Death but the line overall will cost more than it would have with Reanimate, as otherwise only 11 mana is possible by step 13.
Cast Dark Ritual at the start of step 10.

  • Dark Ritual may be replaced with Culling the Weak (line requires an additional creature) or Cabal Ritual (with Threshold). Adjust casting during step 10 accordingly.

  • Starting with LED and Life / Death in hand should work.

Use Razakth as a sacrifice to Burnt Offering, adding 8 mana to your pool 7. Cast Peer into the Abyss and draw half of the library 8. Assemble a winning boardstate with the drawn cards

Praetor's Grasp can be used to extract value and win conditions.

The simplest method is to grasp a Thassa's Oracle from another player and use Tainted Pact to remove your library.

This card does not fix mana, so that has to be accounted for (e.g., needing double blue for a Thassa's Oracle).

Bonus:
Kudos to Animate Dead, Dauthi Voidwalker, Necromancy, and Reanimate doing much the same thing but for graveyards; wheels are pretty dominant afterall. "Cast/rez your good creature/spell?"

  • Breach in hand
  • LED in hand
  • Wheel in graveyard

  • Cast Breach and LED

  • Crack LED, generating red manared manared mana
  • Cast Wheel from your graveyard with escape, drawing 7 cards
  • Recast LED with escape and crack it for another , discarding your hand
  • Repeat while recasting LED for extra mana to draw your deck and cast your desired wincon

Due to the inherit limited resource that is cards in the library, trying to generate large mana doesn't necessarily facilitate enough mana to continuously cast Jeska, Thrice Reborn for a burn win.

Doom Whisperer is a nice little enabler to combine with Underworld Breach; for every two life paid, two cards are milled to the graveyard. With enough life and a little luck, Doom Whisperer mills can provide the fuel to kickstart a rapidfire Breach storm event.

  • Underworld Breach + Wheel of Fortune In the graveyard + Lion's Eye Diamond

  • Underworld Breach + Wheel of Fortune In the graveyard + Jeska's Will

Use Wheel of Fortune to eventually discard into a win condition.

  11. Sacrifice Eternal Witness to Razaketh to search for Underworld Breach while cracking LED in response to float ( remaining)
  12. Sacrifice a creature or land to search for Wheel of Fortune ( remaining)
  13. Cast Underworld Breach ( remaining)
  14. Cast Wheel of Fortune to draw 7 cards ( or remaining)
  15. Cast LED with Escape, exiling 3 cards from the graveyard ( or remaining)
  16. Activate LED for while discarding your hand ( + / remaining)
  17. Continue the process as outlined above in the "Underworld Breach" section
* Animate Dead / Dance of the Dead / Reanimate: Generally useful and can hit any graveyard for goodies. There are so many good creatures and wheels nowadays that you're super likely to hit something good. * Castle Locthwain: Each Ikra hit will net 7 life, which can pay for cards at potentially no true lifeloss. Just a nifty little interaction and an avenue to generate card advantage. See also: War Room * Dragon's Rage Channeler: This is a cool card. The surveil ability is helpful for filtering the deck and Delirium turns it into a nice little beater to smash face with. * Faithless Looting: Card draw and a way to pitch the larger spells for graveyard shennanigans. * Geier Reach Sanitarium: It's card draw, a way to pitch large spells to the graveyard, and a modest means of taking out a Thassa's Oracle player attempting to win the game. * Kessig Wolf Run: OHKO with syngergy with both commanders on the battlefield interests me. You can also buff other players' blockers to make pseudo-fight removal effects. Since it grants trample, this is useful for getting 1 point of damage in with an Ikra swing, thus triggering her ability. * Mizzix's Mastery: Graveyard spell recursion and a valuable Peer into the Abyss / Worldfire enabler. * Sylvan Library: Value from card draw at a high cost of life. * Valakut Awakening  : Partial Paris Mulligan and similar to a 2nd Ad Nauseam if you naus into it the first time. Fixes a poor Necropotence run and at instant speed.

  • Elvish Spirit Guide: is not as important to the deck as the other colors are. The deck does have 13 mana rocks in addition to dorks and Ragavan, which I feel makes up for the loss of ESG.
  • Grinding Station: To fit into the reanimator theme, the deck is currently using Doom Whisperer as a similar Underworld Breach enabler.
  • Survival of the Fittest: The amount of creatures in this deck is not particularly dense, nor is the deck in a toolbox style. If the deck had a higher denisty of creatures and was running some prominant creatures such as Villis, Broker of Blood, then I'd think it would be a more worthy inclusion. See also: Eldritch Evolution
  • Necromancy: The 3MV casting cost makes some Razaketh lines a bit fiddly in comparison to the 2MV ressurection spells. Not a bad card at all but cuts have to be made somewhere.
  • Necropotence: Immensely powerful but awkward in a deck that relies heavily on pitching large spells to the graveyard. The deck is doubling up on wheels at the moment.
