Hello there and welcome to my Veteran Soldier Erinis, Gloom Stalker build.

Origin

Doing a W/G land recursion build has been on my mind for years. This is probably because Flagstones of Trokair is one of my favorite magic cards. For me there is something greatly satisfying about sacrificing lands and getting ahead while doing so. Erinis, Gloom Stalker paired with a white background finally allows me to explore such a deck with an on-theme commander.

Premise

Erinis, Gloom Stalker presents an interesting combination of strategies: land recursion and combat tricks. This deck moves quickly to setup value engines based around Erinis' abilities. By sacrificing lands through our ramp cards like Harrow and Springbloom Druid and our land tutors like Knight of the Reliquary, Elvish Reclaimer and Crop Rotation we can ramp while sacrificing our lands. The tutors can go fetch lands like Flagstones of Trokair and Lotus Field into Thespian's Stage for land tutor ramp lines. Getting this engine online is the core of the deck, as sacrificing and recurring lands enables us to ramp further (Brought Back), use powerful interaction options (Aura Fracture), protect our pieces (Sylvan Safekeeper) and to assemble a token army (Field of the Dead, Scute Swarm).

We rely on the landfall token makers and our Veteran Soldier background to draw our cards (through cards like Idol of Oblivion, Skullclamp). Attacking with tokens is also the main route to victory, overwhelming opponents with our buff spells. What was cool in building this deck is finding options for our draw and buff spells that will still help the soldier tokens that Veteran Soldier summons. Cards like Cathars' Crusade, Rumor Gatherer and Rite of Harmony all work great with the tokens entering.

The Stalking Ranger

An imporant piece to our engine is the attack trigger of Erinis. We need to be able to consistently attack with Erinis regardless of our opponents' board state. Because Erinis has deathtouch, our opponent's will already think twice before blocking. Ohran Frostfang and Saryth, the Viper's Fang apply this ability to all our creatures, also to the soldier tokens we get from Veteran Soldier. Dolmen Gate is another way to protect our soldiers from an easy blocker death. And if a soldier can't be saved, then casting Path to Exile on it is a nice way to still get some value out of it.

Giving Erinis first strike through something like Hyena Umbra can be the extra deterrent we need to always be attacking at will. Indrik Umbra ramps this up to eleven by totally wrecking an opponent's board while we follow through with our main plan. If that's not enough, then a card like Key to the City provides a straight-up unblockable option while also allowing us to discard land cards, and Tiller Engine provides means to clear the way while also adding to our ramp capabilities. Having so many ways to get combat damage through also made this a great deck to squeeze in Court of Ardenvale for some Monarch shennanigans.

Securing The Lands

The deck ultimately wins by outvaluing our opponents, controlling the board, and by amassing a token army for the win. Many pieces in the deck help protect this plan, including the Umbra's and Shalai, Voice of Plenty, who also protects against many graveyard hate cards. Lastly, because we have 2 commanders, the deck includes cards that look for a commander for their effect: Akroma's Will, Flawless Maneuver and Genesis Storm.

Intended Power Level

I already have 2 other decks that dab in the lands matter space. Both of them play at high power level. To also get my lands fix in a more casual LGS setting, I went for a somewhat restrained build with this one. I ended up picking up some more fun and characteristic cards here over the usual subjects. For example, I strayed away from a more-landdrop option like Oracle of Mul Daya and went for a piece like Court of Bounty instead. I like that for many draw, interaction and ramp slots I was able to stray away from staples in more cases than with other decks. There are also plenty of powerful cards I own (e.g. Gaea's Cradle, Wasteland, Mox Diamond) that would be great in here, but would also push the power level of this deck outside the ballpark that I’m aiming for with this one.

Closing Thoughts

I'm having a lot of fun building and playing this deck. The amount of ramp it can generate through sacrificing and recurring lands is quite silly... (already had 12 mana on board at the end of turn 3 in playtesting). That's definitely the direction I'll be optimizing this deck in. For now it has already proved to be a place for some awesome gems I wanted to find a home for, like Dolmen Gate, Brought Back, Realms Uncharted, Riftstone Portal, Genesis Storm, Indrik Umbra and Tiller Engine.

Thanks for dropping by. If you have some tips for me, then drop them below in the comments.
