Budget Magus Lucea Kane - Suggestions Welcome!

Use Custom filters to see the general collections in the deck. I also have my own personal rules as to what cards I like to include. There might be a good card that I don't believe is fun to play against, and thus don't include it. However, feel free to recommend cards regardless!

General Strategy:

X tribal baby! Jam Magus Lucea Kane (affectionately called MLK) ASAP, tap her repeatedly to build mana and copy multiple times, then play multiple massive creatures in one turn!

High Amount of Ramp:

I'm aware, and I love mana, and I'm in a deck that never has mana unused; cut me a break. In all honesty, you truly do need it all. A lot of the X spells do things based off of X outside of give them their stat line, so all that mana directly corresponds with value. Mawloc's and Zoanthrope's damage, how many cards your X draw spells pull, and most importantly how much damage your X multi-target spells hit for all matter based on total mana. I say most importantly as that is how most of the MT removal actually will remove things, though a few get around this such as Curse of the Swine or Spinning Wheel Kick. Additionally, a decent amount of constant draw comes from copying Ravenous triggers, so ensuring you have ~7 mana to ensure you can get X=5 is important.

MLK's Fraility:

MLK being around on the board makes or breaks this deck. If you have enough lands you miiiight be fine, but dumping 15 mana into an X spell without any copies is just sad. All the protection, then, can protect her. She'll also likely be the recipient of her +1/+1 counters every turn, which helps and turns on Kurbis, Harvest Celebrant and Tyrant Guard. Pemmin's Aura also gives her "shroud", meaning there are 7 pieces of protection in the deck. An important note: Exocrine, Flowstone Slide, and Klauth's Will will hit her, so be wary of that. And if she does die?

(Activated Ability) Haste:

The other big weakness of the deck is having to wait 2 rotations before committing murder: once for MLK to be able to tap, once for waiting for summoning sickness of the bomb you played. This is intentional. You gotta work for your wins bucko. However, I think it's okay to remove that first turn of waiting, don't you think? I tried to find cards that only gave one creature haste, and settled on Footfall Crater for the Trample it also gives, Ring of Valkas since it is repeatable if MLK dies, and Thousand-Year Elixir since tapping MLK multiple times in a turn is nuts. That's why I made sure to include some of the best ways to do that.

Tap Untap Tap Untap Tap Untap Tap:

MLK's ability to copy the next X spell/ability stacks, so why only get 2 colorless mana and copy a 10/10 once when you get do it multiple times? An important note is that every way of producing extra colorless mana must be spent on X spells, but MLK's doesn't for whatever reason. So, she can pay the cost of Patriar's Seal or Thousand-Year Elixir or just be pure ramp if you aren't ready to jam your big bois yet. And if everything gets removed?

Don't Deck Yourself lmao:

You hold the power of X draw spells, with the ability to copy them to refill and continue displaying your dominance. And of course with all this draw, we have Reliquary Tower and Thought Vessel. Finale of Revelation can also save your precious pieces of cardboard from going to the graveyard, as there is no recursion in this deck whatsoever.

Unsorted Important Notes:

Garruk's Uprising and Kodama of the West Tree giving Trample is mostly useless as all but Fractal Harness, Mawloc, Savageborn Hydra, and Zoanthrope don't have Trample already (though Exocrine, Kurbis, Harvest Celebrant, and Tyrant Guard don't too if that matters). It can be helpful, but they mainly are for the rest of what the card does.

If you don't have enough large men, Clamavus makes them larger. Or, if you want to be cool for once, you can drop a Flowstone Slide to clear board and juice your dudes. Can't stress how friggin cool you look winning this way. Like honestly. Oh, and on the topic of making them bigger, The Ozolith is kinda sorta a good card.

March of Swirling Mist can be protection or remove blockers or remove attackers. Very versatile.

Speaking of protection, note that Lightning Greaves has Shroud, so you'll have to jockey it around if you need to target MLK with untaps.

Elementalist's Palette will crank so much mana out for you. Just wanted to let you know how stupid good it is. Any MLK deck not running this thing is bad and its creator should cry and think about the mistakes they've made in life.

Incubation Druid's counter comes from MLK. I wouldn't think I'd need to say that but someone at my LGS thought I adapted him with 4 mana (for MLK) so here we are.

Scouting Trek + Animist's Awakening funny.

Twinning Staff copies all of your copies, not just providing +1 copy total. For example, Magus Lucea Kane + Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner + Twinning Staff into an X spell mean 5 of them total. Original, MLK copy, MLK copy from Kiora, copy of MLK copy, copy of MLK copy from Kiora.

Kurbis, Harvest Celebrant is legendary, so copying him (it?) will cause each copy to disappear when the next one enters, right? Actually, you're wrong and dumb but don't worry, so am I. Gang gang. Kurbis is the only one's whose text for his +1/+1 counters is different. Everyone else enters with X counters, so when copied, those copies copy the X value and enter with the same number of counters. But Kurbis, special as he's gotta be, enters with counters equal to the mana spent on him. A copy of him has 0 mana spent on it, so it enters as a 0/0. As for which state-based effect happens first, don't ask me.

Now, say you are a rules nerd and are curious what would happen if he got his counters like everyone else does. Well, after the copy enters, you can respond to the original attempting to resolve by removing the counters from the copy, thus effectively turning his activated ability into an ETB effect as well. Confused? Me too. I had to ask a judge to make sure. Basically, let the copy resolve, then start removing counters from the copy to its activated ability. Once your done doing that, the original will resolve, and legendary rule will have you obliterate one as a state-based effect. Hint: remove the copy. THIS IS JUST HYPOTHETICAL THOUGH AND JUST WANTED TO EXPLAIN WHAT I HAD ORIGINAL THOUGHT SO THAT MY EFFORTS DIDN'T TOTALLY GO TO WASTE. HE DOESN'T PLAY LIKE THIS SO DON'T TRY THIS (but you probably really could if you wanted to be cringe. I don't endorse cringe).

Suggestions

Updates Add

-Errant, Street Artist

+Freed from the Real

Errant's too expensive if I'll only be untapping one thing

-Hungering Hydra

-Magma Pummeler

-Termagant Swarm

+Fractal Harness

Those three stunk, and I've also been drawing too many x spells without having the ability to use them

-Terramorph

-Vastwood Surge

-Grow from the Ashes

+Kodama's Reach

+Purestrain Genestealer

+Farseek

Too expensive for ramp. Even though this deck never loses value from having mana, I should be looking to cast MLK with 4 mana, and a bomb the turn after.

-Herald of the Secret Streams

+Silver Scrutiny

Unblockable was cringe ngl. Having another X draw spell will keep things more consistent too, and with copying it, I can lean on the flash and still get plenty of cards.

+Animist's Awakening

+Scouting Trek

Funny combo with the deck's funny card. We'll see if the Scouting Trek sticks in the long run, but the Animist's Awakening probs will. Thinking about putting in Capricopian as the funny card if I take the Scouting Trek out.

-Island

+Forest

Better land balancing, plus an early Forest is crucial.
