Savageborn Hydra Discussion

Jimmy_Chinchila on Hydras - +1/+1 Counter Crazy

Looks good, I dont know that youd need all 4 Cavern of Souls unless theres a ton of countermagic/blue mages in your local metagame. Only way Id go to all 4 probably is if you splashed for Savageborn Hydra and/or Apocalypse Hydra. If you did the red could open more options for removal in Sideboard. Rosheen Meanderer is legit in R/G Hydras. The Meandering: X Tribal is my EDH version, R/G Exxs is my Modern one. I suggested these cards but if you stay Mono-Green please disregard.

Good stuff!

Great deck idea. I love the hydras, especially the Savageborn Hydra with its double-strike ability.

Have you considered using duel-lands instead of basic ones? Sunpetal Grove, Rootbound Crag, and Clifftop Retreat are all duel lands that come into play ready for use if you have a basic land of their type.

Oh, and a nice alternative to Savageborn Hydra is Apocalypse Hydra.

The reason is, while Savageborn has Doublestrike, if you pay a minimum of 5 mana into X on Apocalypse, he grows twice as big.

So = 10/10

And with his ability to remove a counter and shoot off some damage, that can be useful.

Remember, when you attack / block, damage stays marked on the creature until end of turn. So if your opponent swings with a 4/4 and you block with a 3/3, if you can nail 1 more point of damage to that creature before the turn ends, it will die. I find people often forget that little rule.

ork_mcgork on Drafting IMA, what is it ...

I only went to one draft but it's been my favorite draft ever (never got to do the fabled INN-INN-INN draft). The archetypes are pretty easy to draft, and are powerful so you have good games. Also, there's just enough fixing that you can do some pretty awesome three-color decks to add a little flavor to the archetypes. For example, in the one I did I was in G/W +1/+1 counters and then was able to splash red for Savageborn Hydra - nothing like throwing that bad boy down when you have an Abzan Falconer on the board lol.

130 Euros sounds pretty fair too. The set has some pretty sick reprints in it. I know it went over like a lead balloon but I thought it was a really good set.

Interesting deck idea! However, Fyndhorn Elves isn't modern legal. Definitely trade it out for Elvish Mystic.

I'd also suggest trading out your Savageborn Hydra for something with trample, like Primordial Hydra or Managorger Hydra.

Also, instead of Soul's Majesty, consider Lifecrafter's Bestiary, since it starts working earlier and can let you dump a bunch of extra cards into play every turn, plus it lets you scry for the pieces you need.

Rosheen Meanderer was one of my first commander decks I built. It has since turned into Xenagos, God of Revels and currently Omnath, Locus of Mana; but the meanderer still holds a place in my heart

If you want to further pursue the avenue; I have a few more ideas.
Savageborn Hydra
Primordial Hydra
Lifeblood Hydra
Protean Hydra
Endless One
Verdeloth the Ancient
Steel Hellkite
Flameblast Dragon
Orcish Settlers
Bonfire of the Damned
Stream of Life
Clan Defiance

There's plenty more, but a lot of the one-shot burn spells are just that, one-shot, and don't keep hurting your opponent's turn after turn. Obviously that's a lot of suggestions so choose what's fun for you. This isn't a highly used archetype so a lot of the cards are pretty cheap :)

Cards like Decree of Annihilation scare me as they slow down the game, but one of your opponents could use something like Sensei's Divining Top to get ahead quicker. I know, I've done that to an opponent before after they played Apocalypse.

Genesis Wave drops all of your x-costing creatures onto the 'field as 0/0s and they die. So if you do add a ton of hydras etc I'd suggest removing it. Citanul Flute is epic in here since the converted cost of say, Savageborn Hydra, is only 2.

Anywho, have fun! +1 from me! Pease take a minute to check out some of my decks and +1 them! Cheers

There are a lot of cool stuff you could do, but I honestly thought of Rosheen Meanderer as a commander, so that you have access to Savageborn Hydra, Ulasht, the Hate Seed and Apocalypse Hydra

Neat. Focus more on the colorless mana? How about Rosheen Meanderer with Savageborn Hydra, Genesis Hydra, and Apocalypse Hydra. Anything with X in its cost. Also, Warstorm Surge and Where Ancients Tread. Most importantly, however, Temur Ascendancy and Garruk's Packleader and Elemental Bond.
