Hydroid Krasis Discussion

This deck begs for Hydroid Krasis.

Love the recipe!

My apologies, I don't follow standard and assumed Hydroid Krasis was staying in for some reason.

Why do you think Hydroid Krasis will stay? If Zaxara is gaining popularity and a set with a ton of ramp is coming, why wouldn't it rise in price?

As spoilers come out, this thread can serve as a hub for speculation on that.

If Zendikar Rising is anything like the first Zendikar sets, we'll see a lot of Landfall and land animation. I suspect that the new ability will have something to do with land as well. So obviously Nissa, Who Shakes the World will see some sort of price spike, before it drops out of Standard. Field of the Dead with its own landfall ability will also see more play. If it isn't reprinted (and it probably will be), Risen Reef will probably see some rising.

Most cards from the Guilds of Ravnica block will see a price fall. I think Hydroid Krasis will stay about at its current price, due to the growing popularity of Zaxara, the Exemplary.

Feel free to share your own opinions and educated guesses.

No, you would not gain any life nor draw any cards.

The ability of Hydroid Krasis that draw cards and gains life is a cast trigger. Altered Ego isn't a copy of Hydroid Krasis until it hits the battlefield. So, you wouldn't even get a trigger from the casting of Altered Ego.

Hey all,

I'm curious how casting Altered Ego on a Hydroid Krasis would resolve? Would the new Krasis' card draw/life gain ability trigger off of the new cost of X? Is that even going to trigger?

Thanks!

So for the first scenario, when you announce your intentions to cast a spell, you pick a value for . A few steps later in the casting process, you calculate reduces for the mana that you need to spend. Then, you actually spend the mana. In your Hydroid Krasis example, if you pay UG for it while Gargos is out, the value of is still 4.

The second scenario is quite interesting. Since Unbound Flourishing and Zaxara have cast triggers, you get to order them. Let's say you want to resolve the Unbound Flourishing trigger first. Using the example from above, your Hydroid Krasis where is 4 would instead have be 8. When the Zaxara trigger resolves, you would get a token with 8 counters on it. This is because is a placeholder. Any changes to it are mirrored on both the Hydroid Krasis and Zaxara trigger.

Hey all,

I'm looking to make Zaxara, the Exemplary once the precons drop, and I had a couple questions. First, the X value in it's triggered ability... I'm curious how it reacts based on two different scenarios.

The first is Gargos, Vicious Watcher. Since Gargos can effectively make X=4 without mana investment for Hydras cast, how would that work? For instance... I have Gargos in play. I tap UG and indicate Gargos is covering X as 4, and play a Hydroid Krasis. Is the value of X then 0 because I spent 0 mana on it, or is it 4 because the end result was that Hydroid Krasis was played for 6 CMC which was reduced to 2?

Second scenario is Unbound Flourishing. Same sort of concept, but for the purpose of Zaxara's trigger, are we looking at the final product of X or what was spent?

Thanks for the help!
