Combies: My Glorious Communist Combo Zombies!

Commander / EDH Aristocrats Mono-Black Primer Zombie

My mana curve is still way too high. This deck is a bit of a WIP.

NOTE: My primer is still a work in progress comrade. Additionally, my curve is god-awful.

Some of my favorite combos:

  • Gravespawn Sovereign : Immediately ressurect the creature you sacrificed by tapping all the zombies you just created. It's utterly fantastic, and is my favorite card in the deck. Do NOT underestimate the ability to resurrect creatures for free at instant speed.
  • Thornbite Staff : At worst, this allows us to dump all of our mana into Gisa, creating a boatload of zombies. (Pay a mana, sac a zombie, get two zombies.) At best, however, this little staff allows us to do all sorts of broken things. For instance, with Coat of Arms , we can repeatedly reactivate Gisa to generate an obnoxious amount of zombie tokens. With Magus of the Coffers , and a little bit of work, we can create infinite mana and zombie tokens. I also love to equip this to Gisa, cast Gravespawn Sovereign , and then continually resurrect and sacrifice Phyrexian Dreadnought .
  • Sidisi, Undead Vizier : Tutors have always been powerful in EDH. Sidisi, however, has the potential to be blatantly broken. Because we're in black, continually resurrecting and sacrificing her should be child's play. With Gravespawn Sovereign , we can tap 5 zombies, ressurect her, and let her exploit herself, letting us tutor up anything for free at instant speed.
  • A mix between shenanigans and mono-black good stuff. I'm mainly running this because Gisa is a pretty funny general. The game plan here is to continually sac and resurrect creatures until I can beat everyone to death with zombies. Ghoulcaller Gisa has two great attributes that make her a strong candidate for a sacrifice based deck such as this: 1) She is capable of producing several tokens, with a relevant creature type, for only one mana. 2) She's in black, which has some of the best sacrifice outlets, graveyard manipulation, and death triggers in the game. With Gisa, we can turn pretty much any large creature into a horde of dispensable zombie tokens, which we then sacrifice to manipulate the board to our advantage.
  • When unimpeded, this deck snowballs very quickly. You can easily accumulate dozen of zombies and create huge feedback loops that cause things to get out of hand.
  • This deck excels at killing enemy creatures, whether it be through spot removal or repeated edict effects.
  • Though 's ramp is slower than 's, cards like Cabal Coffers and Crypt Ghast are much more explosive once they finally do take off.
  • Death triggers are friggin' sweet.
  • This deck is highly reliant on Gisa, which is prohibitive due to her high cost of .
  • This deck has zero artifact or enchantment hate.
  • This deck is liable to getting blown out if you overcommit to the board. It's slow and vulnerable to interruption.
  • This deck is currently slow and has too high of a mana curve.
  • I won't be explaining the more obvious inclusions in the deck, such as Skullclamp or Dictate of Erebos .

  • Fallen Ideal : When combined with Gisa, Fallen Ideal allows us to sacrifice any number of zombies to the enchanted creature, effectively combining the power of all of your zombies onto one creature. Then you can sacrifice the enchanted creature to Gisa and return Fallen Ideal to your hand. Thus, for , you can double the amount of zombies you have on the field every turn.
  • Helm of Possession : Sacrifice a worthless token, steal a giant creature, and then sacrifice the giant creature to make more worthless zombie tokens. Rinse and repeat until you win the game.
  • Gisa likes having big butts in the 99. In fact, you can even justify throwing in some creatures with nasty drawbacks, as you're probably going to sacrifice your Phyrexian Soulgorger before you ever have to pay its upkeep cost. Yargle, Glutton of Urborg is likely replacing Desecration Elemental because it lacks the glaring drawback; I'd rather have creatures that can function as beaters in addition to being Gisa-fodder. Some notes:
  • Lashwrite: Creates a beefy body during the initial casting. Then, you can continually equip it to creatures before you sacrifice them to Gisa.
  • Phyrexian Dreadnought : Once this hits the field, its sacrifice drawback will hit the stack. This gives you a window to respond by sacrificing it to Gisa, netting you 12 zombies for only .
  • Desecration Demon and Abyssal Persecutor : These two are fantastic inclusions. They're not only able to provide 6 zombies each, but even just using them as giant, cost-efficient beaters are more than reasonable.
  • Phyrexian Devourer : This one is a bit complicated, but it basically acts as a free win once it hits the board. First, you activate its ability, making it get bigger. Once it's too big, its 'drawback' hits the stack, which will force you to sacrifice it upon resolution. However, while the sacrifice drawback is on the stack, you can activate its ability again, making it even bigger. You repeat this, continually exiling cards off the top of your deck for as long as you like, and then finally sacrifice it to Gisa to make a hundred or so zombies.
  • Phyrexian Soulgorger and Desecration Elemental : You can sacrifice these to Gisa before their drawbacks kick in.
  • I've thrown in a decent chunk of tribal synergies, which all
  • Gravespawn Sovereign : Instant speed. Free. Resurrection. This card is insanely dumb because of how much it synergizes with the other cards in the deck. As a baseline, you can sacrifice a creature with Gisa to create a bunch of zombies, and then instantly resurrect it with the zombies you made. This also gets insane with Sidisi, Undead Vizier , as you can continually resurrect and exploit her to continually tutor cards from your deck.
  • Coat of Arms : This card is a bit of a double-edged sword, as any enemies with a tribal theme will also benefit from this card. However, the payoff you get from this card in Gisa can be incredibly strong, as each additional zombie provides an ever-increasing buff to the whole team.
