Scourge of Nel Toth Discussion

StopShot on Alesha, Who Luls at Death

@Rikente, I wouldn't concern myself with adding zombies. My deck only runs Wayward Servant and Gravecrawler and everything works just fine. Wayward Servant's ability is too weak to be used for anything other than an infinite combo. Gravecrawler I wouldn't mess around with unless you're bent on abusing him with Skullclamp or Grave Pact.

If you must add more zombies for value I'd suggest Taurean Mauler, Fleshbag Marauder, Liliana's Elite, Scourge of Nel Toth, and Mirror Entity since those cards are good regardless of if they're in a zombie deck or not. If you want an easy way to recur your Wayward Servant then I suggest adding Volrath's Stronghold or Unholy Grotto as a budget alternative.

Gotta say, budget decks are my favourite decks! I'm not exactly sure how to play Meren, as I don't have a deck, but I'll try my best on some suggestions!

So I personally LOVE making decks built around sacrificing creatures, so I'll be sliding in a ton of suggestions around that!

Scourge of Nel Toth - 6/6 flying bodies can be scary, especially on turn two! Try to get this out early to beat face early game!

Journey to Eternity  Flip - Seriously one of my favourite new RIX cards, I love bringing back stuff from my graveyard constantly. I know Meren does that for free, but if you enchant Meren with this, she can survive a removal attempt, and bring back stuff from your graveyard too! Also ramp so that's important

Bloodspore Thrinax - On first glance this looks really good. You can cast it and sacrifice everything on your field, then bring them back one by one with a ton of +1/+1 counters on them!

Sidisi, Undead Vizier - Pretty sure this is a must for Meren decks, the amount of tutoring you can get from it is insane!

If you are going to include The Gitrog Monster, Ramunap Excavator is one of the last cards you should cut to make room for it, it is one of the signature cards for Gitrog's deck. Just add Terramorphic Expanse or other similar budget fetchlands.

Ghoultree is just a big body with no additional abilities once it's on the battlefield.

In my Gitrog deck I included at some time the Millikin, I ended up cutting it because one card wasn't really worth it and it died to easy to any board wipe. So I'd say here is just the same (you have similar number of creatures as I have lands in my deck). So I would cut it and Deranged Assistant too.

I'm not really in love with Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord either, your deck looks like it wants to go creature wide rather than high. But many people like it, so it may be just personal prefference. Also his color requierements are over the top for a three color deck.

Is Skaab Ruinator worth exiling three creatures from your graveyard each time? Scourge of Nel Toth feels like a better option as you will probably have more tokens to sacrifice than creatures to exile. Tokens are a renovable source, but creature cards in graveyard are a limited resource.

I've faced Undead Alchemist several times in my friend's Gisa and Geralf deck, I can tell you that it is a respite for me everytime he plays it. Yes, he gets a bunch of zombies, but I'm not losing any life meanwhile. It is just buying me time until someone casts a boardwipe.

Isn't Corpse Connoisseur a bit high cost just for tutoring a creature into the graveyard? Honest question, I've never used it, but I'm not really sold on it.

Maybe you can survive without Brawn. Again, most of your deck is putting many creatures on the table and trample is better the bigger the creatures are.

The deck feels heavy and it doesn't ramp too much and some cards have activated abilities that need mana, those make the deck even slower. I advise to cut cards costs five and higher that you see they underperform (hard to tell just from the simulator), maybe a couple lands more also.
At least in my meta, by turn 6 there are a lot of scary stuff in the battlefield swinging left and right and your deck has a lot of late game cards. But you know, each meta is different.

Sidisi she needs to attack to trigger the milling, some support for her to survive combat may be necessary Key to the City is really nice and Whispersilk Cloak is a commander staple.

If you play Living Death, some graveyard hate is needed. I run Bojuka Bog in every black deck I have.

Maybe Shivan Harvest and Sylvan Library? The greater the density of dragons and cheat effects you play, the less top-deck manipulation you need, I think. Maybe also Darksteel Plate, Primal Rage, and Quicksilver Amulet. Blades and Silence the Believers? Flying gives you decent evasion, and something like Fires of Yavimaya to back-up Dragon Tempest might be better to go wide, quickly, with dragons.

I like that you are not running Prossh. It might be fun to test Wasitora, Nekoru Queen (I love that card), Vampiric Dragon, and Scourge of Nel Toth, too.

Entomb would help a lot with consistency.

Living Death and Corpse Connoisseur would be great especially the corpse connoisseur since you could continuously cast him to keep getting more dudes into your grave. living death is great especially if you have sac outlets so you can guarantee you don't sacrifice any creatures and then you get them all back which can overwhelm your opponents with etb triggers and your massive board vs their not so massive board.

Golgari Grave-Troll (more on the expensive side) and Stinkweed Imp are great ways to get creatures into your grave to increase consistency and ggt is a great body that you can play late game and keep on the board for a while.

Scourge of Nel Toth would be a good consideration as a self recurring creature. Dread Summons is an amazing way to fill your grave and amass a huge army of zombies (the card is seriously bonkers).

Dread Return and/or Unburial Rites wouldnt be bad either but not needed as much, just more ways to reanimate creatures without your commander out or so you can do more than 1 creature a turn.

Phyrexian Arena is another great way to draw cards.

Massacre Wurm seems like a great card if one of your friends plays a wicked sweet scarab God zombie token/mill deck.

Scourge of Nel Toth also seems really good here.

Also, Scourge of Nel Toth was more intended to be cast from either the graveyard or with Liliana, Death's Majesty rather than direct from its CMC.

For Soulless One, do you think the CMC is too high for it to be beneficial in an aggro deck? I figured since it's power/toughness grows with each zombie in play and in graveyards, it's great for a deck with tokens, Liliana, etc.
