What is Command Tower?

Command Tower is a casual multiplayer format for 2–4 players where everyone shares a single deck, library, and graveyard. Players also draft from a rotating pool each turn while piloting their own commander.

Step 1 - Choose Commanders

2 Players → Each player picks a 3-color commander

3–4 Players → Each player picks a 2-color commander

Step 2 - Game Setup

  • Randomly determine turn order.
  • Each player starts at 20 life.
  • Reveal the top 7 cards of the library and place them in the middle of the table (this is the Draft Pool).
  • Each player draws 5 cards.
  • Mulligans — Players may mulligan by putting any number of cards from their opening hand on the bottom of the library and then drawing that many.

Rules

New Step: Draft Step

During the Beginning Phase of each player’s turn there is an additional step after the Draw Step called the Draft Step. During the Draft Step, the active player chooses a card from the Draft Pool and puts it into their hand (this does not count as drawing a card).

Whenever the Draft Pool becomes empty reveal 7 new cards from the top of the library and put them in the Draft Pool.

Special Land: Command Tower

This deck contains multiple copies of Command Tower which have the following additional properties:

  • They count as basic lands.
  • While in your hand, in your graveyard, on your battlefield, or while searching the Draft Pool, they have each basic land type corresponding to the colors in your commander’s color identity.

Example - If your commander is "Muldrotha, the Gravetide", your Command Towers are Islands, Swamps, and Forests.

Control/Ownership

If a permanent entered the battlefield under your control, or if you put a spell or ability on the stack, you are it's owner.

Eliminating A Player

When a player loses; all cards in their hand, all permanents they own, and all spells they control on the stack are put into the graveyard.

Search Effects

If a card instructs you to search your library, search the Draft Pool instead.

Variants (Optional) — If your group wants to experiment.

Extended Mode → Start at 40 life.

The Emet-Selch Protocol → The player going first plays Kykar, followed by Rashmi, then Emet-Selch, and Johann goes last.

Card Shuffling Simulator Mode → Ignore the "search = draft pool" rule.

Creative Mode → Use your own custom commanders, card pool, or rules. Who cares? The stakes have never been lower!

Have fun :)
