Description coming soon...

Themes

  • Rats and Rat Colony
  • Power Matters, Evasion, and Trample Equipment
  • Aristocrats and Recursion

Curve

  • Turn 1 put out a cheap rat or other 1 drop (need 15 to make this statistically probable)
  • Turn 2 put out a Rat Colony
  • Turn 3 put out a support card (need 10 to make this statistically probable)
  • Turn 4 put out Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm, Mill cards and recur Rats
  • Turn 5 use Sac Outlets and Sac Payoffs to gain value, then regain your Rats

Design Notes

  • Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm is good at three things, buffing your rats when you attack or defend, putting rats from your deck into your hand, and filling your graveyard.
  • For Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm's anthem buff, he has to attack or defend as well but he doesn't get the buff. When defending he's somewhat likely to die, depending on what's attacking you. When attacking, he's very likely to die unless you have guaranteed evasion like Access Tunnel, Rogue's Passage, Dauthi Embrace, or Whispersilk Cloak. This is statistically unlikely and the commander tax means you only get one or two of these before it becomes less viable as a strategy. This means he's actually better at coup de grâce (single swing win) then repeated attacks. This may be antithetical to the current build as he often needs a specific board state for the Rat Colony's to really benefit from this ability.
  • For Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm's ability to put rat into your hand, this is both a good draw ability (specifically for rats) and it provides ample recursion. If you are playing around 34 rats in your 99, on average you'll get 1.37 rats in your hand. As rats dies, it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll get two in your hand every turn. This is good for Death Payoffs and sacrifices. If you play an ETB Rat, sacrifice it, then get it back at the end of the turn, you can play it again next turn. The only drawback is that most rats in the deck cost , so you either need them to be cheaper through cost reduction, or you need the benefit from the Sac Outlet (or combat exchange) and Death Payoffs to be worth considerably more than (cost plus a card). This means, ideally you need to stack Death Payoffs. Unfortunately, most of them aren't rats. So they're harder to get in hand.
  • For Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm's ability to fill the graveyard, this is only partially used, as the primary Value Engine is Aristocrats, not Self Mill or Reanimate. This may need to be revisited, as it also may help with commander replacement.
