Felix Five-Boots - Reach for the Sky (v0.5)

Commander / EDH BUG (Sultai) Counters Proliferate

KBK7101

Maybeboard

Hello and welcome to my first few rough drafts for the new Felix Five-Boots from Outlaws of Thunder Junction! This deck started out as the Grand Larceny pre-con deck and I've been working on upgrading and refining it to fit Felix better. I've decided to focus on a +1/+1 counters theme for this deck, but he could be built in a lot of different ways!

Would love feedback and recommendations as I try and figure out what exactly I want this deck to look like!

EDIT #1: First revision is in!

EDIT #2: Second revision is live! I think it might be focusing a bit too hard on counters now, though... hmmm....

Edit #3: Below is a heavily WIP primer! Please excuse the dust!

Edit #4: Update #3 is up! There might be another revision soon to help tweak the land/ramp/removal/recovery/draw ratios but I think the decklist is mainly stable for now!

How about Druids' Repository? Felix doesn't interact with the trigger, but you'll have to attack anyways. With the proliferation you have in here, this would do a ton of work.

Ooooh that's a good one! And a card I know I have a copy of, which is even better. Lol

Your mana curve is looking chef's kiss.

Overall, looking more solid since I checked it out yesterday. If you feel like you're now leaning too heavily into the +1/+1 counters theme, it could be helpful to swap a couple of Counters related slots with some more draw like Night's Whisper, Plumb the Forbidden, or just draw slots that aren't dependent on your creatures connecting with combat damage.

Also, if you want to condense your Counter Support slots into quality vs quantity, Railway Brawler could also help in that regard.

Also, you might want to add your No Universes Beyond disclaimer to your primer. I was about to suggest adding Danny Pink as a middle ground for draw and counter support.

Yeah, I need to look through the deck once more and tweak some more stuff. Card draw is always good and Railway Brawler seems sick!

And once I get the primer started, I'll definitely be adding my no UB clause. It just sucks because the actual effects some of them have are sooooo good.

Ohran Frostfang, Toski, Bearer of Secrets, Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy, The Indomitable, Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor, and Marcus, Mutant Mayor are all excellent draw engines here. I personally recommend running 3-5 of these but especially Ohran.

KBK7101, if you and/or the people you typically play with don't have any issues with proxies, maybe you can make your own "Universes Within" custom versions of some of the UB stuff so you can try them out.

Last_Laugh I already added some of those and am going to add a few more. Thanks!

Crow_Umbra I've thought about doing that before but haven't had the time to sit and go through them and come up with in universe variants. I do like the idea, though!

Np, sorry if any of those were already in the deck. Custom categories throw me off especially when they're sorted non-alphabetically lol.

April 19, 2024 12:09 a.m.

It's all good! To be fair, I haven't fully fixed up my custom categories yet. I don't think I even have a card draw section. Lol

Thada Adel, Acquisitor could be fun if your meta plays a lot of mana rocks

looks fun!

Thada Adel is pretty nasty! I'm not usually a fan of theft type cards but I'll definitely add it to the maybeboard!

Glad to see your Five-Boots list up like you mentioned! I'll definitely be keeping tabs on this as you make your changes and upgrades.

I checked out your Maybe List, and I'm glad to see that you have Spawnwrithe and Mist-Syndicate Naga; they were both some of my favorite "host bodies" for when I used to play Brokkos, Apex of Forever Mutate Voltron.

These are some cards I also used to run in Brokkos as host bodies, but I think they could do some work in Five-Boots, especially if you add in some of the Swords of X & Y, but check out Cephalid Constable and Needle Specter. Constable & Specter are much more immediately mean as hosts for Brokkos, but they could still be fairly disruptive with Five-Boots.

Thanks! Hoping to start tweaking this deck either later today or tomorrow!

If you're looking to lean a bit more into +1/+1 counters, I think Managorger Hydra and Ravenous Slime could both be decent candidates. They balloon into threats on their own without much needed additional investment on your part from support cards, and both have built in evasion.

Champion of Lambholt could help open up evasion for your board to get those combat triggers, and Herald of Secret Streams could also help in this regard.

April 17, 2024 11:39 a.m.

I'm actually in the middle up tweaking the deck right now. I already added most of those cards! I don't think I've ever seen the slime, though. That's a good one!

April 17, 2024 11:50 a.m.

Nice! Lol Ravenous Slime is one of those cards that each time I play it, it receives a "It does what?!" response from folks. If you play against aristocrats stuff fairly often, it can get out of hand.

You must have made the edits while I was typing up my suggestions. I kept CRTL+F searching to make sure I wasn't suggesting something you already were considering. We're on the same wavelength once again lol

April 17, 2024 11:55 a.m.

Yeah, that card is definitely going on my "next to buy" list. Both of the revisions I've made so far have just been with cards I've had on hand. Definitely going to look into grabbing a handful of TCGPlayer on Friday.

Really excited to get and test out cards like Westgate Regent, Froghemoth and Ayara's Oathsworn!

Probably going to cut the rest of the ninjutsu cards and a few of the smaller unblockable creatures.

April 17, 2024 12:59 p.m. Edited.

Sound like solid cuts to make, I was going to suggest cutting the Ninjutsu stuff. I checked out a bit of the Command Zone's Grand Larceny upgrade guide yesterday, and I think they suggested cutting the Ninjutsu stuff too lol.

Froghemoth is fun! I'm running it in my soon-to-be published Ognis, the Dragon's Lash deck. It's the current successor to my Prosper & Windgrace decks.

April 17, 2024 1:37 p.m.

I love ninjutsu as a mechanic and I love the on hit effects they have.... I just don't think they fit with the theme I'm going for. I'm super excited to continue tweaking this deck, though!

But I think I'm leaning a bit hard on +1/+1 support but not enough enablers/evasion at the moment.
