Prying Blade

Artifact — Equipment

Equipped creature gets +1/+0.

Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, create a colourless Treasure artifact token with ", Sacrifice this artifact: Gain one mana of any colour."

Equip (: Attach to a target creature you control. Equip only as a sorcery.)

Beamtown Beatstick: A sidegrade of Prying Blade (costing instead of ), this humble common is AFAIK the cheapest menace-giving Equipment so far (with the exception of Eater of Virtue, but that requires some setup). More generally, its saboteur ability is pretty much universally useful to trigger and obviously synergizes with menace.

I have a Quest for Ula's Temple deck which does some similar things, I liked Dreamscape Artist because it can reshuffle your library as needed, incase you don't have a relevant creature to work with on top. It's technically only 1 mana and a card to Harrow (you get back 2 untapped lands, so it can also helping mana fixing) Blue, and I could be wrong but I think your Commander wants the odd Discard outlet too. A worse (but still potentially useful) piece of Blue ramp is Apprentice Wizard, it's not as good as Dreamscape, it's like Worn Powerstone, which is a good rock if you want bigger ramp to potentially cast a big creature a bit sooner. Thran Dynamo and Gilded Lotus are big ramp rocks with decent ratios. Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and Cabal Coffers are pretty good together, if you have a lot of devotion to a colour Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx can help, Deserted Temple can untap any land that makes extra mana. Less rampy and more of a big Scry effect, Soothsaying is a neat card if you care about your deck order. Scroll Rack is better but costs more.

Just a general idea, you might throw in things like Reconnaissance Mission, Bident of Thassa, and Coastal Piracy along with some Unblockable or Shadow creatures (Thalakos and Dauthi are the Blue and Black tribes). You can also throw in stuff like Sword of the Animist, Dowsing Dagger  Flip, Prying Blade, Goldvein Pick, Grim Hireling, and any other attack payoffs you can find to generate more value over time. I understand you want a sea-monster theme, but you might want a way to draw some cards/get in some chip damage to soften people up. The only drawback to Shadows is that they can't chump block. If you really want your evasive creatures to be able to chump, there are some small flyers like Spectral Sailor and Thousand-Faced Shadow that have other upsides, these are risk free but are way less evasive than Shadows.

On that note, if you're worried about getting attacked you might look at Propaganda, War Tax, Flood, and Fatespinner are all great ways to make you hard to attack. Mass Diminish, Polymorphist's Jest, Sudden Spoiling, AEtherize, Aetherspouts are all great cards for people to fear.

Callous Oppressor is a funny repeatable theft effect, Ritual of the Machine and Helm of Possession can both steal stuff and are great with tokens, Thieving Skydiver can steal an artifact creature fwiw, Sower of Temptation is a so-so theft effect that shines bright if you can flicker or bounce it, Thalakos Deceiver is probably way better since he permanently steals whatever and can be reanimated, Inevitable Betrayal and Bribery are both pretty sweet.

The biggest (and perhaps best) theft effects are Mass Manipulation and Cultural Exchange, exchange requires bodies but can also be used aggressively to just ruin two players' boards.

Inkwell Leviathan, Lochmere Serpent, Spawning Kraken, Stormtide Leviathan, and Wrexial, the Risen Deep are some relevant creatures I use, some are better than others but there is nothing as bad as Sea Serpent or Bog Serpent, both cards I love but don't use.

If you like Whelming Wave, you might like Spectral Deluge as well.

Hope some of this helps, Big Dimir is a fun deck!

Rakton The build looks a lot stronger! My current thoughts would be:

  • I think you should ditch Darksteel Forge. Its mana cost is really prohibitive, and i think it would be better to use your treasure towards getting the dragon out, rather than this. This also feels too late-game to be super useful.

  • I’d also ditch Prying Blade, as its a pretty high cost for what you’re getting. Sticky Fingers feels waaay stronger, so maybe run 4x of that if you’re really after this effect.

  • I think you should be running a playset of Galvanic Blast. Interaction is super important in magic, don’t just ket your opponent do what they want! I actually think your deck might be a lot stronger with 8 cards of interaction, so i’d also suggest adding a playset of Dispatch.

  • i’m not sure you get huge value from Slag Fiend here, so maybe that goes to make room for some of the above.

Apollo_Paladin Those are some great recs and I totally agree using cards like Cathar's Call and Prying Blade to get a use from something each turn is key to making this deck excel. Personally I dont like Revel in Riches so I never use and though black would be a fun splash, I feel like it might jumble the deck and have it loose consistancy. Also lands are expensive lol. Gilded Goose is a pretty good addition too, esp for the mana and for keeping me healthy. Currently its at 64 cards rn but I'm trying to cut it down to around 60-62. Do you have any suggestions on cuts to make it more consistant or do you feel like 64 is fine? Thanks for the tips!

I would focus on some cheaper (mana-cost) token creation spells to play off of all your synergies here a bit sooner. Gilded Goose isn't bad for early mana ramp, and he's got a repeatable trigger for your Academy Manufactor.

It's also really hard with all of your doubling enchantments to avoid suggesting adding in a splash of Black (provided you've got the dual lands for it) and adding in a couple Revel in Riches to add an additional win condition to your build with all of those tokens you can create.

A Revel to Riches build would let you add in things like Prying Blade that could help towards a win condition later in the game as well as speeding your mana generation (and token creation triggers) up in the early game.

Even if you don't end up splashing black, White has some pretty decent low mana cost token creation cards like Castle Ardenvale (useful for when you run out of a hand), Raise the Alarm, Servo Exhibition, and Cathar's Call. You already have some decent cards in your build, I think just some supplemental cards to keep taking advantage of at least 1 of them each turn is going to be your best bet here.

Hey nice deck! The way i see it you can focus more one one direction of this deck and use the other for support: either auras or equipment. Aura Focus: Add: Archon of Sun's Grace Ashiok's Erasure Boon Satyr Copy Enchantment Curiosity Darksteel Mutation Dissipation Field Hydra's Growth Gift of Paradise Hypnotic Siren Ichthyomorphosis Idyllic Tutor Kenrith's Transformation Plea for Guidance Psychic Impetus Unflinching Courage

Remove: Masterwork of Ingenuity Puresteel Paladin Explorer's Scope Indomitable Archangel Catti-brie of Mithral Hall Resolute Archangel Valiant Endeavor Serum Visions Brainstorm Angelic Gift Unsettled Mariner Cold-Eyed Selkie Military Intelligence

Equipment Focus: Add: Balan, Wandering Knight Behemoth Sledge Belt of Giant Strength Golem-Skin Gauntlets Kemba, Kha Regent Mask of Memory Mirrormade Paradise Mantle Prying Blade Quest for the Holy Relic Whispersilk Cloak

Remove: Resolute Archangel Ajani's Chosen Valiant Endeavor Gryff's Boon Angelic Gift Unsettled Mariner Military Intelligence Cold-Eyed Selkie Serum Visions Brainstorm Explorer's Scope Indomitable Archangel

And if you dont want to focus on one this would be a more Varied apporach incorporating a little from both Both Focus: Add: Fleecemane Lion Geist of Saint Traft Kiora's Follower Mirrormade Spirit Mantle Staggering Insight Utopia Sprawl Curiosity Beast Within Archon of Sun's Grace Curiosity Darksteel Mutation Dissipation Field Idyllic Tutor Unflinching Courage Behemoth Sledge Kemba, Kha Regent Mirrormade Quest for the Holy Relic Whispersilk Cloak Kenrith's Transformation

My Suggestions...

Also you could try and grab Negan, The Cold-Blooded ... but that's up to you.

SO then the other thing. What do you do if someone throws Null Rod or similar?

As it is right now, I think the main focus needs to be on getting more mana ramp. Expedition Map is a great card for finding specialty lands. Mana rocks like Mind Stone , Prismatic Lens , and even Marble Diamond can give you an important turn two play. Prying Blade might find a slot for early ramping too.

After that the next focus needs to be on lowing the mana curve. As it is right now it is mostly four mana value (casting cost or converted mana cost). having more one, two, and three drops will improve the speed of the deck as well.
