Prying Blade Discussion

Eaterofvegans on Friendly Griffins

As it is right now, I think the main focus needs to be on getting more mana ramp. Expedition Map is a great card for finding specialty lands. Mana rocks like Mind Stone , Prismatic Lens , and even Marble Diamond can give you an important turn two play. Prying Blade might find a slot for early ramping too.

After that the next focus needs to be on lowing the mana curve. As it is right now it is mostly four mana value (casting cost or converted mana cost). having more one, two, and three drops will improve the speed of the deck as well.

Prying Blade OUT Explorer's Scope IN

Prying Blade has always been terrible in this deck. After all, while our evasive creatures can make mana with it, they are usually bounced before they do damage, and hence it can't pay for its own equip cost. Plus if pirates are the eternal enemies of ninjas, then why would they use a pirate sword? Explorer's Scope is great because in this deck we'll often know what the top card of our library is, and thus we have a turn one playable card that we can often use to ramp out lands. Also, ninjas need spy scopes for their espionage activities.

In Garruk's Wake OUT Devastation Tide IN

While IGW can provide great damage when we draw it off the top on a Yuriko trigger, it is way too expensive as a board wipe, and the best board wipes for Yuriko are blue ones, since they put our tools right back in our hands to be re-used again. Also, we can usually cast DT for its miracle cost, which is great. Additionally, IGW just feels like the wrong flavor for this deck.

Seems like a Treasure Token sub-theme would be on-point here, so you don't have to sacrifice useful artifacts to your Commander's ability.

Brass's Bounty , Dockside Extortionist , Magda, Brazen Outlaw , Goldspan Dragon , Goldvein Pick / Prying Blade , etc. Hellkite Tyrant for an alt win-con and to steal your opponents artifacts.

i would take out Contract Killing and replace it with alot of cheaper two mana kill spells like Doom Blade or Heartless Act or Go for the Throat . for it's cost Prying Blade is just not that good. id also go up to at least 36 lands, 35 is way too low. Boarding Party , Brazen Freebooter , and Prosperous Pirates also seem pretty weak in the deck. But the deck has decent draw and removal/interaction, and alot of spells make treasures as a byproduct for flavorful ramp too which is great

Rishadan Cutpurse , Rishadan Footpad , and Rishadan Brigand might also be cool inclusions but they aren't from ixalan so i dont know if you want them for flavor reasons

Five years ago, when we had Archangel Avacyn  Flip, Gideon, Ally of Zendikar , Thraben Inspector and Thalia's Lieutenant in Standard, I've heard many a complaint that white was too powerful in Standard back then. Ever since, we've shifted via red to green as the most obnoxiously present color in the meta, and the complaints stay. I do think there's no pleasing magic players.

White already cares about artifacts, however, even though not all of them. Mostly equipments. Which help you ramp Sword of the Animist , Prying Blade , Goldvein Pick and draw Rogue's Gloves , Mask of Memory , Sword of Fire and Ice . White tutors for them like no tomorrow, draws off of them with Sram, Senior Edificer , Puresteel Paladin , Stone Haven Outfitter .

In the one game I've played in 2021, I attacked with an Armored Skyhunter that had a Prying Blade on it, in my Reyav deck. My commander was out, but my opponent had a flying blocker. The Skyhunter triggered, and I revealed the top 6, 1 by 1... and the last one, after like 5 lands and a Signet, was a Whispersilk Cloak! So I slid it on the Skyhunter and got those sweet, sweet Treasure. Not as cool as yours, RambIe, but it's something :)

Omniscience_is_life ooo I can't believe I forgot Rogue's Gloves, that is a good include! Thank you! Prying Blade is also a maybe... I'm not sure if even two treasures are that great... but maybe it can replace sword of the animist.

seshiro_of_the_orochi Those seem like good choices. I'm thinking this deck needs about 2 fewer creatures and 2 more pieces of equipment. What do you think?
