You only need 1 counter

Bobguy27, 8 years ago

As fortold only needs 1 counter to make it good here. So you play it on turn 3. Solemnity on 4. Thing in the ice on 5 with lots of things to do with open mana and 1 counter on as fortold. Playing 1 mana spells counts here.

Deck Changes 2: Electric Boogaloo!

Daedalus19876, 8 years ago

Over the prerelease weekend, I opened/traded most of the cards I needed in the deck! The deck continues to perform fantastically, frequently killing the table on T4.

I did make some minor changes, however:

Chandra, Flamecaller, Descent of the Dragons, Subterranean Tremors, and Fateful Showdown are OUT (along with one Island and one Mountain). Dream Halls, Jace's Archivist, Sunder, Whirlpool Drake, Spirebluff Canal, and Homeward Path are all IN!

Casual testing

capnpwnzr, 8 years ago

I playtested the deck a bit, and found that the only downside I can find so far is that if my hand runs out, it starts to be rough. I dropped catacomb sifter in favor of painful lesson. The deck is now creature-less, but still runs pretty smooth.

Minor Tweaks

LabManiac_Cameron, 8 years ago

+Forest +Swamp +Bloodstained Mire +Scalding Tarn +Tarnished Citadel +Edric Spymaster of Trest -Tolarian Winds -Whir of Invention -Cabal Coffers -Temple Garden -Hallowed Fountain -Eladamri's Call Some changes to the mana base, adding a few more lands, removing some harder to cast cards for some more versatile one. Adding in Edric as a duplicate Tymna. Trying to smooth out draws and mana base primarily.

Updates

Cptk, 8 years ago

Ruination was put in in place of Molten Psyche

And

Snow-Covered Mountain was added in favor of Mountain for added benefit with Extraplanar Lens

Ruination was taken out in favor of Blood Moon

Want to find a spot for Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker

Found one in favor of Stuffy Doll

Kayneundhelun, 8 years ago

Added x4 Necroskitter and x2 crumbing ashes, removed Creakwood Liege, Ashenmoor Liege, and x2 Blur of Blades.

This change both slightly reduces mana curve and allows greater interaction with opponent creature removal and using their losses, as opposed to liege buffs. Still testing ideas, this may or may not stay.

Blue black eldrazi deck

TehSnake, 8 years ago

Cards will work well with one another. Lots of creatures, not many spells. Very fun. Cheaper than most other eldrazi decks.

Not quite as budget

Got my hands on a Greater Auramancy. Not quite as budget as I usually try for.

-1 Launch the Fleet, +1 Forsake the Worldly - Launch is cool, but forsake is a legal sunforger target, and can cycle in dead matches (not many of those in commander)

4-0 Modern monday (8-0 in games)

herfs, 8 years ago

I finally got back to playing in a modern event yesterday. I finished first going 4-0 (8-0 in games) with about 30 people attending.

My matches were:

UW control win 2-0

cards that preformed well: Stubborn Denial, Thoughtseize

under-performing cards: none came up

notes: played against an inexperience pilot. tried not to over-extend myself by just playing one strong threat while keeping up Stubborn Denial for their planeswalkers (specifically Elspeth, Sun's Champion) and have another strong threat in my hand. I was trying to play around wraiths.

UW control win 2-0

notes: played against a very experience pilot. game 2 I used snapcaster to target thoughseize in order to make my death's shadow big enough to swing for lethal. during game 2, I cast a thoughtsieze while holding 2x death's shadow, Anguished Unmaking, and a Geist of Saint Traft. I see that his hand is filled with spot removal, Supreme Verdict, and a gideon. I take the verdict and land geist to close out the game. turn 5 he played gideon and thought he was safe, but anguished unmaking took care of him.

mill win 2-0

cards that preformed well: delve cards, Stubborn Denial, Lingering Souls

under-performing cards: none came up, I sided-out Thought Scour though

notes: game 1 on turn 2 I didn't Stubborn Denial Glimpse the Unthinkable and was able to play Tasigur, the Golden Fang and Gurmag Angler on the same turn. He used Ghost Quarter on my lands and I ended the game with two creatures in play with no lands. game 2 was close but having snapcaster in hand with a full, spell-filled graveyard is a great way to control the game.

**the esper deck with jace, Obzedat, Ghost Council, Goryo's Vengeancefoil, etc. ** win 2-0

cards that preformed well: Stubborn Denial, Liliana, the Last Hope, Surgical Extraction, Path to Exile

under-performing cards: none came up

notes: this deck was fun to play against. I was able to control the game though a combination of Thoughtseize, Liliana, the Last Hope (Lingering Souls is a pain to deal with) and using Surgical Extraction on key cards (such as Lingering Souls). Path to Exile worked wonders against Obzedat, Ghost Council.

Overall, the deck felt great to play. Stubborn Denial was the best card all night and I wouldn't go less than 4 in the 75. I like the 2/2 split between the sideboard and main too. I played pretty conservative all night trying not to over-extend myself. I found that this deck is great at playing more of a control game while sticking one or two large threats and having one in reserve.

-1 Spellweaver Volute, +1 As Foretold - An upgraded way to get free spells, and it eventually makes Narset only cost the commander tax.

-1 Archon of the Triumvirate, +1 Combat Celebrant - The deck just isn't looking to cast CMC 7 creatures, without big synergy or immediate payoff. Combat Celebrant is a very fair way to get extra combats and extra Narset triggers

-1 Sphinx of the Final Word, +1 Wildfire Elemental - As above, the sphinx is just too big for where the deck wants creatures. Wildfire Eternal lets me cast free spells from hand, in case I draw into Clone Legion or a similar one

-1 Dovescape, +1 Swarm Intelligence - Dovescape has been fun, but it just becomes a race. I only had one way to go underneath it (Sphinx stopped it from countering). Swarm intelligence can put us on a different "turbo-mode"

+1 Refuse / Cooperate, -1 Geistblast - almost a strict upgrade

Trying Something Different

Dancing-Blade, 8 years ago

2x Reverent Hunter -> 2x Knight of the Reliquary

Reverent Hunter's reliance on other cards and lack of other abilities has been making me consider his position, and I've wanted to try out Knight of the Reliquary for a while now and after rejigging the land a tad I find her to be a very useful creature for a few reasons. Firstly, she has awesome synergy with the fetch lands, which can buff her up immensely by using her ability to chain into them. Due to the ability to ditch lands into the graveyard at this rate, her other use is as a reliable enabler for Rhonas the Indomitable. Finally, her most useful ability is her power to dig a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx straight out of the library. Due to her ability to do such, I was able to make another slight change...

1x Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx -> 1x Gavony Township

Gavony Township is proving to be a very effective mana sink in playtesting, similar to how Rhonas functions. Only wanting one as I don't really want to draw the card as early game reliance on is too important. Ideally, this will be fetched out with Knight.

+3 Raven's Crime
-3 Inquisition of Kozilek
+1 The Gitrog Monster
-1 Kozilek, Butcher of Truth
+2 Lands
+2 Conflagrate
-4 Street Wraith
+1 Life from the Loam
-1 Fatal Push

Changed the land base a bit, in favor of some more cycle lands which are quite nice with loam.

+1 The Scarab God - It's a great body and value engine for any fair, beat them with zombies game, and it's also graveyard hate that comes back to my hand after living death for the combo line of play.

-1 Sacred Cat, +1 Adorned Pouncer - Cat upgrade. They serve the same role at face value (speed bump), but Pouncer's zombie form is a serious threat that makes better use of pumps.

-1 Viscera Dragger, +1 Champion of Wits - They serve almost identical roles. Pay a little to load your graveyard, then rebuy them later for a body. Champion costs a little more, but does both better

-1 Sage's Dousing, +1 Unconventional Tactics - It's a sweet, tribal pump spell thay can let the triplets get in commander damage, or be discarded to a draw->discard effect for card advantage.

-1 Hero's Blade, +1 Dagger of the Worthy - Chesp source of power, and afflict makes blocking less enticing. Hero's Blade wasva little too narrow, only helping Vela

-1 Walker of Secret Ways, +1 Dreamstealer - Walker was here because of the initial dedication to ninjas, but it's just a weak member of the tribe, and I rarely felt the desire to activateits effect. Once it's known that a specific ninja is in my hand, it's far less effective, and I givevenough forms of evasion that Walker's bottom effect is unappealing. Dreamstealer has built in evasion, a good combat damage trigger, and tge eternal version is great.

Curving out

Lutris, 8 years ago

Tinkered with the list a bit, with a focus on the curve. Took out 5 high CMC cards (Angel of Glory's Rise, Requiem Angel, Angelic Arbiter, Silver Seraph, and Fated Retribution). Added in 2 plains, and three cheaper spells (Swords to Plowshares, Collective Effort, and Wrath of God).

I feel best about Wrath of Retribution, and I think Collective Effort is also a good pick, but I am sad to see some of the giant angelic beaters go. I think between lowering the curve and boosting the mana base, the deck should be in a good place. Maybe I don't need the extra lands if I am swapping out the higher CMC stuff, but now I just have to play with it some more to see.

-1 Stoic Archangel, +1 Grind / Dust - The front side is a lot more potent with Atraxa, enough so that the back side might be able to work with Hapatra or Phyrric Revival later. Stoic was just good stuff in here, and I'm slowly working on an angels deck, so I want the foio copy for that.

-1 Soulflayer, +1 Obelisk Spider - -1/-1 counters are inching their way towards being a full sub-theme. Spider seems to nicely walk the line of working alone/providing synergy. If it performs well, I may rebalance the deck to make more room. Flayer was fun and awesome, but I want to start getting more -1/-1 counters, and the Keywords package only really needs Odric/Concerted to get tons of value, so I'm going to slowly trim it down to strengthen other packages. Surrak is probavly the next cut.

Sideboarding Guide - Combo

Luke740, 8 years ago

Combo:

Creatures Toolbox:

A matchup full of tough decisions, and one where for once pointing burn spells at creatures can be the correct choice. Here Searing Blaze shines, but watch out for Kitchen Finks.

On the Play:

Out: 2x Rift Bolt

In: 2x Grafdigger's Cage

On the Draw:

Out: 1x Eidolon of the Great Revel, 2x Rift Bolt

In: 1x Grim Lavamancer, 2x Grafdigger's Cage

The matchup becomes far grindier on the draw, and having a recurring source of damage in Grim Lavamancer to gun down opposing creatures or deal the last few points to face.

Valakut/Scapeshift:

This game is just a race, can they stall you before you kill them, or will they combo off. They get better after sideboarding, and you will frequently see Obstinate Baloth, so keep your Skullcracks handy.

On the Play:

Out: 3x Searing Blaze

In: 1x Grim Lavamancer, 2x Deflecting Palm

On the Draw:

Out: 3x Searing Blaze

In; 1x Grim Lavamancer, 2x Deflecting Palm

N.b: if you see lots of red boardwipes, consider bringing in Kor Firewalker

Dredge:

Not a bad matchup, but can depend on how quickly they can flood the board.

On the Play:

Out: 1x Skullcrack, 2x Lightning Helix, 2x Rift Bolt

In: 2x Deflecting Palm, 1x Relic of Progenitus, 2x Grafdigger's Cage

On the Draw:

Out: 1x Eidolon of the Great Revel, 2x Lightning Helix, 2x Rift Bolt

In: 2x Deflecting Palm, 1x Relic of Progenitus, 2x Grafdigger's Cage

Expect them to sideboard in a number of copies of Collective Brutality, and possibly also Gnaw to the Bone.

Elves:

A good matchup for Burn, where Searing Blaze truly shines. Keep key creatures off the board, but otherwise go for face with your burn spells.

On the Play:

Out: 2x Skullcrack

In: 2x Grafdigger's Cage

On the Draw:

Out: 1x Eidolon of the Great Revel, 1x Skullcrack

In: 2x Grafdigger's Cage

Post board games get better for you in general, as the only dedicated Burn hate Elves commonly runs are 1-2 copies of Spellskite and Scavenging Ooze

Ad Nauseam:

Not much to say about this matchup, hinges on how fast they can cast cast Ad Nauseam and if they play Phyrexian Unlife, as then extra damage that will need to be dealt can be problematic.

On the Play:

Out: 4x Searing Blaze

In 1x Grim Lavamancer, 3x Destructive Revelry

On the Draw:

Out: 4x Searing Blaze

In: 1x Grim Lavamancer, 3x Destructive Revelry

Expect them to board in Leyline of Sanctity, so ensure you have a hand with plenty of creatures and fetch a green source early to enable you to cast Destructive Revelry. These can also be used to target you opponents mana-rocks to force them to empty them at sub-optimal times.
