Depends how hard you want to go in on the combo. Zany decks like this are hard to pin down numbers on - since it isn't super well explored there's no real right answer on how many, but I'd say with your 12 cantrips you don't need to play all 4. At the same time, if you're only running 1 you may as well not run any at all. Your sweet spot is going to be either 2 or 3, I think.

Another thought I just had is Trinket Mage can search for mantle and provides a body to block with, which buys you more time to set up the combo. If you ran a set of him you'd be at 12 wizards in the deck, at which point it might be worth looking at Sage's Dousing and/or Wizard's Retort.

Another another thought I just now had is if you plan on winning in one turn (which you do), you can run Pact of Negation to protect your combo on that turn for free, and not have to worry about the catch since the game will be over before it matters.

I don't necessarily think you should do all of these things - they're just some thoughts to get the ball rolling so you can experiment until you find what's best/most fun :)

As a mono blue player myself (haven't updated my deck in a while here to be honest) I cannot keep myself from recommending some cheap draw like Brainstorm, Ponder, Preordain,Opt, Serum Visions, Gitaxian Probe. Some really good and cheap counterspells are Remand, Memory Lapse, Sage's Dousing (as your commander is a Wizard), Mana Leak, Force Spike, Exclude, Dismiss; just to name a few. Solemn Simulacrum is a bomb in every Commander deck, and Frost Titan is a great finisher. I would cut Walking Ballista.

I could probably write more bit this is what i could come up with right now. Hope to be helpful!

I'm glad you like my deck, thanks for your suggestions! :)

Sage of Epityr was a pretty recent addition so adding some Polluted Deltas sounds like a great idea.

I've tested Stonybrook Banneret in earlier versions but I don't like it for some reasons:

  • I already have plenty to do on turn 2. I'd like to get Metallic Mimic out before I play any other wizards and I'm also trying to get card draw going with Dark Confidant. In certain matchups I want to play a Meddling Mage asap, while Voidmage Prodigy has priority against other decks.
  • It doesn't actually provide discount on many Wizards: only 12/30 have their cost lowered while the effect doesn't even come in handy when i'm putting creatures onto the battlefield with Aether Vial.
  • In a deck where the discount effect has great impact, you'd like to have that type of effect every game. In this build however, drawing multiple Stonybrook Bannerets doesn't do aynthing.

Sage's Dousing needs some more testing imo. Lowering the creature count makes Aether Vial worse and it doesn't come in handy until turn 3 so I don't want to play too many. It is card advantage + control however, so it's on point with the strategy of this deck.

Hey there! Awesome deck - I've had a Wizards deck saved on my phone for a little bit, and I love your implementation. Have you considered Stonybrook Banneret at all? What about Sage's Dousing? I find that they're both rather strong cards in a Wizards deck. Also, I might consider adding in a couple of Polluted Deltas to maximize the effectiveness of Sage of Epityr.
