Hey, saw your forum topic asking for help. Good build on such a low a budget. Realistically to make much improvements you're going to have to be able to spend more than $30 for your deck.

My advice is to lower the mana curve by adding more low CMC Wizards and more low CMC instants and sorceries that draw cards. End the curve with two five drops Wizards: Azami, Lady of Scrolls, Shipwreck Dowser and one six drop Archetype of Imagination. I suggest playing double the amount or more of instants and sorceries than Wizards because technically you don't need other Wizards because Adeliz can pump herself. Still have a strong base of low CMC Wizards, just a smaller one.

Since Adeliz can pump herself and has flying she is really your best win condition doing 21 Commander damage to each opponent. The problem with Adeliz is she doesn't provide card advantage only pump therefore you need a lot of other cards that draw cards to fuel the pump.

Some Wizards can help for card advantage:

  • Windrider Wizard: lets you draw each time you cast an instant or sorcery or even a Wizard and he has flying which makes him a threat to attack. If just about every card you cast draws you a card then that's a nice advantage to keep drawing instants/sorceries/Wizards.
  • Burning Prophet: repeatable scry is powerful when you want to draw certain cards and not lands or other cards. She can filter away lands so that you draw instants/sorceries/Wizards.

Consider more low CMC Wizards? That way you can establish a Wizard army quicker and get faster benefits from Adeliz with other Wizards. More low CMC flying Wizards can benefit much more from the pump from Adeliz because they can more easily do combat damage to an opponent:

With more low CMC flying Wizards then cards such as Bident of Thassa and Reconnaissance Mission can draw a lot of cards since you draw a card for each creature who does combat damage to a player. This is a way to keep refilling your hand with instants/sorceries by attacking with Wizards even if you don't have instants/sorceries to cast. Flying Wizards are still going to do combat damage to a player and draw cards. Shared Animosity is repeatable pump for each attacking Wizard you control. This repeatable effect is in addition too any pump that Adeliz does.

Izzet has a wealth of good low CMC budget instants/sorceries that draw cards that are staples of Commander:

Shadow Rift and Slip Through Space are one drop spells that can make Adeliz unblockable while also drawing a card.

Some budget lands upgrades to consider:

Good luck with your deck.

Why Sprite Dragon out of all the options you have to pressure an opponent in this kind of deck. Have you considered Lightning Stormkin and/or Stormchaser Mage with Wizard's Retort and Wizard's Lightning, Brineborn Cutthroat, Grim Lavamancer, Spectral Sailor, Sea-Dasher Octopus, or Pteramander? Does the deck need Anger of the Gods or does the burn take care of creatures well enough?

I'm curious how well Light Up the Stage fits. It's an instant speed deck for the most part with some burn and creatures to activate it, but hitting Remand and Ral, Storm Conduit for example would be useless. Thunderous Wrath seems amazing when it hits but is that good enough to balance out the times it just sits in your hand? I'd prefer something like Searing Blaze, which seems to be perfect for the deck. Chart a Course also seems nice, but it's sorcery speed which sucks. Have you thought of using Curious Obsession?

Uh... Im not sure you know what your commander does based on your creature pool. On a scale of 1-10, i would rate this a 1.5, but i'll help you with that. You might as well be running Golos, Tireless Pilgrim. You have a small number of Dragons in the deck, and I noticed a bunch of useless non-dragon creatures in the deck.

32 lands is wayyyy to few, and you have an awful mana base, even on a budget, having only 1 tri-land and a random af arrangement of shock and gain lands.

You have little ramp, if any, which will slow you down greatly in a format such as commander Another concern is your lack of mana rocks. Why only one signet?

Your removal is pathetic, to be honest, with only one murder. Removal is IMPORTANT in commander, being used at both utility and a rich bargaining tool in the political side of the format.

But enough with flaming the deck, here is what I would put it.

First off, let's talk about your commander. It supports a heavy dragon tribal theme, and you want nearly all of your creatures creatures that either add to this theme or ramp you to get him out earlier. If you are to be running a non dragon creature, make sure it is a utility creature such as Reclamation Sage that can either ramp you or get rid of problems on the board.

Here is what I would cut if i was building him:

Creatures:

Ajani's Pridemate - No lifegain synergy and bad creature in EDH

Brineborn Cutthroat - A 2/2 with flash wont cut it in Ur

Corpse Knight - No sacrifice theme

Dreadmalkin - cmon, really?

Empyrean Eagle - Other cards do this a lot more efficiently

Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch - No madness or counter theme

Faerie Vandal - just no

Garenbrig Carver - bad in general

Gravedigger - not a dragon

Grumgully, the Generous - not efficent

Hackrobat

Kronch Wrangler

Law-Rune Enforcer

Leafkin Druid

Lightning Stormkin

Loxodon Sergeant

Meddling Mage

Nimble Birdsticker

Nyxborn Marauder

Shepherd of the Flock

Spectral Sailor

Squee, Goblin Nabob

Wandermare

Venerable Knight - no synergy in deck

Instant:

Gift of Strength

Infuriate

Murder

Scorching Dragonfire

Soul Manipulation

Artifact:

Manalith - You can keep it in, but it isn't very good

Helm of Awakening

Crystal Shard

Sorcery:

Compelling Argument - 0 MILL THEME!!!

Enchantment:

Moldervine Reclamation

Here is what I would add:

Creature:

Dryad of the Ilysian Grove - Can ramp you AND fix your mana

Lathliss, Dragon Queen

Utvara Hellkite

Silumgar, the Drifting Death

Scalelord Reckoner

Scourge of Valkas

Dragonspeaker Shaman - cuts down mana cost drastically

Dragonlord Kolaghan - Haste enabler and good beater

Dragonlord Dromoka - game winning lockdown effect

Ramos, Dragon Engine

Drakuseth, Maw of Flames

Deathbringer Regent

Balefire Dragon

Nicol Bolas, the Ravager  Flip

Hellkite Tyrant

Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund - haste enabler

Kokusho, the Evening Star - good beater with amazing ability

Birds of Paradise - great mana dork

Scourge of the Throne

Dragon Broodmother

Dragonlord's Servant

Removal

Swords to Plowshares

Path to Exile

Assassin's Trophy

Anguished Unmaking

Utter End

Beast Within

Putrefy

Terminate

Krosan Grip

Decimate

Ramp:

Kodama's Reach

Farseek

Cultivate

Explosive Vegetation

Skyshroud Claim

Circuitous Route

Mana Rocks

Sol Ring

Mind Stone

Commander's Sphere

Arcane Signet

Darksteel Ingot

ALL the signets (Emphasis on ALL)

Lands:

All tri-lands from Tarkir and Alara

Haven of the Spirit Dragon

Exotic Orchard

Terramorphic Expanse

Try to get all 10 fetch and shock lands if at all possible

City of Brass

Reflecting Pool

Fabled Passage

Temple of the False God

Utility lands:

Bojuka Bog

Reliquary Tower

Maze of Ith

Rogue's Passage

Planeswalkers:

Sarkhan, Fireblood

Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner

Anthems:

Metallic Mimic

Icon of Ancestry

Urza's Incubator

Coat of Arms

Vanquisher's Banner

This is just a few thing I think the deck could need, obviously it needs ore board wipes and wincons, however this is a good place to start. I want to be clear, I dont hate the deck, but I Think it needs improvements to become and 8. For your first commander deck, it's just fine. Thanks for reading. Cheers

I think that Stormchaser Mage would probably be better in this deck than Lightning Stormkin Cool deck btw.

DemonDragonJ on Jhoira or Keranos?

TheOutcastWarlock, also, do you feel that there is a sufficient number of non-creature spells to reliably trigger the prowess ability of Stormchaser Mage? If not, I shall replace it with Lightning Stormkin.

DemonDragonJ on Help Me Reduce My Decks …

The next deck that I wish to discuss is named Fire and Ice. As with the previous decks, I shall remove two lands from it, which leaves me with eight more cards that I need to remove. I likely shall remove two copies each of Dominus of Fealty and Hypersonic Dragon, due to their high mana costs; Mindwrack Liege is more expensive than are they, but it is too good to not have four copies of it in this deck.

I am contemplating if I should remove either Jhoira of the Ghitu or Keranos, God of Storms from that deck, as they are both awesome creatures, but I do need to reduce the number of cards in this deck. Lightning Bolt is also an awesome card, but it is the least essential card in this deck, unfortunately, so I likely shall not keep it. However, if I do remove it, will there be a sufficient number of non-land spells to trigger the prowess ability of Stormchaser Mage? If not, I shall replace that card with Lightning Stormkin.

I also have a blue/green deck named Artificial Evolution, from which I also plan to remove two lands, leaving eight non-land cards that need to be removed. I likely shall remove two copies of Trygon Predator, because, as great as that card is, it is unlikely that my opponents shall have a sufficient number of artifacts or enchantment for it to be necessary for me to have four copies in this deck, as well as two copies of Horizon Chimera, because the lifegain from that card is largely negligible, but flash, flying, and trample are all excellent abilities, so two copies may remain. As good as Winged Coatl is, I still need to remove cards from this deck, so I shall likely remove two copies of it, as well.

Edric, Spymaster of Trest, Maraleaf Pixie, Murkfiend Liege, and Prophet of Kruphix are all too amazing to remove, but Overbeing of Myth is disposable, as tragic as that may be, so I likely shall remove it, as well.

What does everyone else say about these two decks? What cards should I remove from them to reduce them each to 60 cards?

Made a few modifications today after testing it. I also couldn't find my Magma Jets, so once those are located Ral, Storm Conduit & Messenger's Speed will be replaced by Magma Jet . Mana base was decreased to 17 vs 21 and overall CMC is now under 2. Creatures changed slightly, as Lightning Stormkin was removed, and replaced by Stormchaser Mage . I also added Soul-Scar Mage as well.

Hey plusARGON! Thank you! I don't know. It's worth a try for sure, but like Wizard's Retort , I think it's awkward to keep 3 mana. Especially because we don't aim to get more than 3 lands on the board, I'm skeptical of its performance.

That being said, I could see it replacing the Lightning Stormkin in a slightly slower variant. I'd then swap a Titan's Strength for an island and perhaps both Twisted Image s for Vapor Snag or some form of counterspells.
