I love old legends and I love the Esper shard and I love theft. I have two theft-oriented decks already though: Roses of May -- (Marchesa Reanimator) and The Braided Siren's Song (Show n' Tell Theft). I wanted to make a control EDH deck so this is my attempt. Not the heaviest "Merieke" suite but there are some toys (untappers for extra thefts, Conjurer's Closet, Darksteel Plate, Arena of the Ancients, etc.) for her. I noticed that the previous iteration of this deck, which was more Merieke-focused and a mid-range deck, would cause board stalls all the time since nobody wanted to play a creature. I thought to myself, "how can I make this an advantage?" Then it came to me: non-creature control-finishers, particularly Approach of the Second Sun!

The game plan is to play lots of removal and keep the board as clear as I can then drop Merieke Ri Berit to scare opponents into not playing too many threats. I can then protect Merieke and my win-cons with counterspells.

The goal is to win with Revel in Riches or Approach of the Second Sun, ideally found with tutors. Grave Betrayal combined with removal/wipes as a backup. Merieke stealing creatures is a win-con too but, as I said, this deck is less Merieke-focused than many Merieke decks (as well as the previous iteration of this deck). I could probably use some more win-cons like Expropriate, Torment of Hailfire, Exsanguinate, and Painful Quandary (or Bloodchief Ascension, Baneful Omen, Exquisite Blood+Sanguine Bond, The Scarab God, or Mind's Dilation to a lesser extent) but haven't gotten around to getting them and/or they're pricey. Starting to run out of cuts though--gotta have a baseline of control and draw cards and I still want a modest number of Merieke cards to keep her a threat.

With a much bigger budget I could run all the classic cEDH wincons, such as card:ad nauseum or Isochron Scepter stuff along with better tutors and some other bigtime heavy-hitter cards but that's a colossal financial investment for me only to make an unplayable deck--my groups and LGS are pretty casual and if I wanted to be that competitive I'd invest in Modern or Standard (or Arena!). My friends groan enough when I whip Merieke out!

I feel like I need to up the proportion of counterspells slightly. I feel like I need more everything though--more removal, more draw, more win-cons, more protection. maybe that means the ratios are fine? Probably means I need a bit more card draw. Cuts are so hard at this point.

Like most of my decks, the land base could use more money thrown at it but I don't like spending that much on lands--I'd rather make a whole new budget deck!

Cards with an SL in the Maybeboard are cards I own. Cards with an MP are potential cuts.
