”Still the mind and quiet the heart. Only then will you hear the Multiverse’s great truths.”

    - Narset

has been my favorite color combination since I started playing during Dragon's Maze. My first standard deck was American creature-less control with Elspeth, Sun's Champion and Assemble the Legion as my finishers. So when I started playing EDH, I wanted to make a deck that was a reflection of my first America deck. The original version of this deck used Ruhan of the Fomori as the commander and it worked pretty well. However, Narset is just one of the best commander available, in my opinion. This deck is more of a control deck that uses Narset for her value rather than more than a Narset combo deck. The game plan is simple: control the field, never overextend, and punish those that do.

To be told, I actually think Narset combo is very good. If the deck swings once, the game is generally over. It’s brutal, it’s quick, and it’s hard to deal with once it gets going. One of the better builds, in my opinion, is markszncd ’s Narset, Master of Chain Reaction. It’s absolutely explosive. However, I’m not that type of player. My very first commander deck was a variation of Narset combo and it just didn’t fit my play style. I don’t like being completely dependent on Narset. I’ve seen it backfire way too much. If the other players are prepared for Narset shenanigans, the deck doesn't perform at all. Countless times I've seen Narset combo just get blown out by an early Stranglehold or Nevermore. They spend the rest of the game sitting back and praying their one removal spell arises, if they even have it in the deck. For a glass cannon build, taking away Narset completely neuters the deck. However, this is the gamble one takes when you play a glass cannon deck. I don't like that gamble.

When I sit down and reveal that I’m playing Narset, I know I’m going to receive plenty of hate from the other players. I know that the other players are going to try and keep me from casting Narset. Thus, I wanted a deck that was able to function somewhat without Narset. Don’t get me wrong, though. Narset glass cannon is a perfectly legitimate way of playing the deck. It's just not me. With this in mind, I had two clear choices for how I wanted to take this deck. The first option was to take the combo with some interaction route. A great example of this is NarejED ’s Narset's Face-Wrecking Turn Fest. This is a variation I would gladly play. My second option was to keep aspects of the combo deck while adding plenty of control/stax elements to the deck. I chose to incorporate interaction to control the pace of the game. I prefer to have an overwhelming presence of locking down the board, which I feel like does very well. This is where I found my home. I traded explosiveness for resiliency and I’ve never looked back.

Whirlwind of Thought is just a good card draw. The two turns from Time Stretch are too strong to ignore.

10.21.22

Karn's Temporal Sundering is a bounce and a Time Warp, so it’s just better. Plaza of Heroes is a reliable source of mana. Windswept Heath has less targets than before. Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset is just a lateral change from Windfall. There are times that I wouldn’t want to discard my hand. Delayed Blast Fireball is just a one-sided sweeper.

Naarset’s Reversal is steadily falling out of favor with me. I rather it be Counterspell most of the time. The Wandering Emperor and Farewell were added because they are both power removal cards. Steel of the Godhead is only good if Narset is swinging while The Wandering Emperor exiles creatures, makes tokens, and pumps a creature. The Emperor just has more applications. As we all know, the land cycle in Kawigama is busted so it was added into the deck.

The card selection for Jeskai control in all formats has gotten much better. I noticed that I was missing some of the better control pieces so I swapped out a bunch of cards. As for the cards that were removed, most of them are greedy cards that aren’t good most of the time (Oath of Teferi, Mind's Desire, Strionic Resonator, Static Orb). I’ve been Alrund's Epiphany’ed enough times to know that it is one of the best time warps. Dovin, Hand of Control, Narset Transcendent and Dack Fayden don’t pull their weight. I’m not impressed with Personal Tutor for this shell when Mystical Tutor does the same thing and more. This version is completely better.

I noticed that this deck is still getting views and upvotes even though it's been long retired. For real, I felt guilty because it was so out of date. I have no plan to rebuild this deck in paper because I didn’t think the environment is great for Narset. First, there are more ways to hate on Commanders, such as Drannith Magistrate, and this style of sorcery control is easier to bully in multiplayer. Second, there are just better Jeskai commanders now, leaving poor Narset by the wayside. However, the last few sets provided Narset with great, new tools, especially from Strixhaven. As you can tell, this was a massive update. I don’t have time to go swap by swap and talk about my thought process. When I have the time, I will write a full primer for this deck. Thank you all for stopping by this build.
