NarejED Too Much CEDH

I've dabbled in standard, and have a handful of casual decks, but my real passion is without a doubt competitive EDH. I love building around degenerate commanders. Love seeing a strong list come together. Love the look on opponent's faces when I combo out on turn three. The format just really appeals to me.

As of late, I've been enjoying contributing to the list EDH Generals by Tier

I'm happy to discuss any and all things EDH related any time.

I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for all of the great work you have done for the cEDH tier list. A lot of your work has inspired me to get more competitive in my deck building. Thank you for your effort, and stay awesome!

HEy NarejED I want to submit my deck to you here to see what other changes you think I need to make my deck the gold standard for tier 3 zedruu.

The only other thing I can think of is Possibility Storm but it is a lock piece with Arcane Laboratory/Rule of Law

I did take out Form of the Dragon as that targets one person and I added Kismet in its place.

Average CMC of the deck is 3.02.

Are there any cards you know of that do direct damage that may be worth including, that weren't previously viable due to the multiplayer format?

My thoughts are stuff like Lightning Bolt which becomes good again due to the 20 starting life, can be used as removal, etc. and stuff like Bogardan Hellkite due to its damage on EtB and it comes in swinging.

I believe there are still some Kaalia staples worth running, like Avacyn, Angel of Hope, Master of Cruelties, etc. Also, a really nice inclusion, Griselbrand is legal.

Hey buddy, I have a 1v1 tournament coming up soon using the French banlist. I was thinking about converting Kaalia to a 1v1 deck, potentially permanently. She just doesn't produce like I want her too in Multiplayer, but I think she could be pretty awesome in 1v1.

Do you have any tips, or help you could provide?

Hey m8! I found out how to let you edit my commander tier list, I simply need to add you as a friend, and the checkbox 'Allow shared users to edit this deck' is already ticked ;)

I will add you and share it to you, simply write me back if everything goes well!

Hey, is it alright if I update the tier list with tiers 1.5 and 2.5 this Sunday?

January 21, 2017 2:22 a.m.

The art is just an online fan-made alter unfortunately. Most popular magic cards have proxy art available like that. A quick Google search will turn up a good half dozen for Kaalia.

I'm not really a fan of Cruel Tutor. It's expensive, tutors to top of the deck, and is only sorcery speed. Imperial Seal is great because it can be played turn 1. Tripling the cost of the card takes away most of its playability.

I do miss Gisela a lot. Sadly, I had to make a lot of cuts when Hellcarver was added in, and Gisela was one of the lowest-impact cards in the deck. Competitive EDH games are almost never decided by combat damage, so she ends up doing very little.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Depending on the meta, Anafenza can be significantly better in the command zone than Karador, Ghost Chieftain. Her ability shuts down opponent's Hermit Druid, Boonweaver Giant, Necrotic Ooze, and nearly every other GY-based strategy. Some even argue that she's actually better overall than Karador.

January 19, 2017 6:07 p.m.

Updated my thought experiment for what stretching tier 1 and 2 would look like. Added what I thought tier 2.5 would look like, as well as a maybeboard of other commanders that mind end up in it depending on how low we draw the line. Link

If everyone is relatively satisfied with it, I'll update the main list in a few days, after the survey results come in.

Ranking in order from best to worst is impossible. It falls apart right after the top. Who's second after Zur? Tazri? Yidris? Who comes after that? How do you account for rock-paper-scissors effects, meta dependent variables, and deck pilot quality? Who gets the final say on these arbitrary decisions? It's simply too subjective and tedious to be done.

@AzamiLadyofScrolls: Here you go. Invite to the cEDH Discord Channel

@thegigibeast and Lilbrudder: I've been hesitant to add half tiers in the past, but I've rethought my stance. I also spent a few minutes making a preliminary list of what I think Tier 1-2 would look like if we did pursue that route. Link. Note tier 2.5 is not included, at least not yet.

@thegigibeast: Nope. :)

Updated a few days ago right before I went to bed. I must have put added a second Dispel instead of typing Flusterstorm. Fixed.

January 16, 2017 1:24 p.m.

@Lilbrudder: Agreed. A major change is long overdue. When someone extremely inexperienced can come in and make a more accurate tier list in under two hours, there's something seriously wrong.

January 16, 2017 5:03 a.m.

Yeah, listing certain commanders multiple times for different builds seemed odd to me too. It's my only real complaint though.

January 16, 2017 1:01 a.m.

Adding Engine to Arcum cut off over a turn on average goldfish time. I still wouldn't advise moving him up, simply because, while this increases his speed, it does nothing to curb his deck's reliance on its commander or difficulty navigating certain forms of hate. Same for Sisay.

Also, a fellow cEDH Discord user is trying to make a purely competitive tier list. Thoughts? Link

@chaosumbreon87: Storm and extra turn effects don't synergize well at all. I'd advise dropping the extra turns and going all in on Storm. It'll speed up your Melek build quite a bit.

Said on Lemon Meren Pie...

@lanfeara I've considered Winter Orb a bit. The biggest issue I have with it is that Meren tends to be pretty greedy on mana. Even with an abundance of dorks and mana rocks, Orb still ends up hurting me almost as much as the average cEDH opponent. Root Maze runs into the same issue.

Elvish Visionary is better in decks that can use her to her full potential, IE any Elfball build or Animar. In Meren, she's pretty low-impact. The card draw is nice, but we have better engines.

Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip sat in the maybeboard for a long time. LotV has been a great card in the list. What ultimately led me to decide not to include the Flip Walker was her consistency. She was extremely low-impact as a creature, and it was difficult to consistently flip her within a turn of casting her.

@Nic44: I'm flattered! Glad to hear I was able to help. As for Winding Constrictor, I agree it seems too win-more. While there are many cards run that synergize with her, Meren herself isn't a critical part of the deck. I only end up casting her 60-75% of the games I play her. Often you're going directly for a quick kill with Buried Alive or Survival of the Fittest and don't need her. We don't run many counter-based creatures or artifacts. Thus Constrictor's main upside is generating extra Experience counters, which is very rarely a priority. It seems like a better fit for a casually built Atraxa, Praetors' Voice than a tuned Meren deck.

@AverageDragon: He was moved as part of some discreet house cleaning of the lower tiers. Along with some of the major change suggestions that are featured in the pole, there were a few minor recommendations like Bruna, Phenax, and Zirilan moving down, and Rayne moving up. All were fairly borderline and have had little or no interest given them in the recent past. Plus with the influx of new commanders from Kaladesh, C16, and Aether Revolt and raising of Tier 2's standard, it made sense to demote some of the weakest Tier 3 commanders to reflect the increasingly powerful meta. None of the changes seemed significant enough to hold a full vote on, though any can of course be appealed/debated. You can check the full change log here. Any commander that appears there has been recently moved, though sadly it does not show their previous position.

Said on Marath of the ......

Ooh, I like the idea of Nightshade Peddler here. I might have to test that out.

Nykthos has been pretty good. Turn 1-4 it's usally not netting value, but late-game it can help fuel a hardcast Norn or Shaman of Forgotten Ways win. It's one of the cards that got better after the Partial Paris rule change, which slowed down the format enough to make it useful more often.

There's not really anything critical enough to the deck that Safekeeper/Mother of Runes would be needed. Kiki and Norn are the two biggest targets. Most of the time you'll be wishing they were stax pieces or utility spells instead.

January 10, 2017 9:04 p.m.

@p0megranates: Bruna, Light of Alabaster was literally just moved from tier 2 to tier 3 the other day. Your last paragraph doesn't make any sense.

@Watason723: Those are some interesting thoughts. For the most part they're at odds with the popular opinions. IE, Tazri is slightly better than Prossh due to a lower combo cost and better color identity. Animar, Derevi, and Tasigur are all at or near the bottom of Tier 1 currently, with Ancestral/Imperial Animar simply not performing up to snuff any more, Derevi Stax running into numerous issues, and Tasigur rendered nearly obsolete by the printing of the almost strictly better Thrasios, Triton Hero. It would be great if you could explain your reasoning behind that short list at the bottom of your last common.

January 10, 2017 9:39 a.m.

@JaysonSunshine: One reoccurring piece of feedback I got was that I was over-represented in the decklist section, so I've been making an effort to replace decks I've made with alternatives of the same caliber wherever possible. Teferi was one of the easiest, since there's a good amount of interest in in cEDH.

January 10, 2017 2:35 a.m.

@ZomBee_Hunt: I would recommend making a separate budget-less Zedruu list online that runs all of the powerful high-price cards you don't own in paper. While keeping an online deck that reflects what you play in paper is useful, it isn't a good fit as a deck claiming to be the gold standard for the represented Commander.
