Lightning Talons

Enchantment — Aura

Enchant creature

Enchanted creature gets +3/+0 and has first strike. (It deals combat damage before creatures without first strike.)

Your land count seems a bit low, especially since your average CMC is above 3. Your commander isn't the cheapest but does make equip costs cheap once she's out. You may want to consider bumping up to at least 33 lands and adding 1 or 2 more mana rocks such as Sol Ring.

You can probably cut some of your aura's. The ceiling on All That Glitters is high enough to stay but Angelic Gift, Gift of Orzhova, Lightning Talons, and Messenger's Speed could get the axe for, well, literal axes such as Bloodforged Battle-Axe. Your strengths with your commander are equipment and the bonus is your equipment survive creature board wipes unlike your auras. Plus, there are equipment that do the same thing as the aura's on your list.

Loxodon Warhammer could be an easy replacement for Butcher's Cleaver.

Colossus Hammer can be a powerhouse, more so if you give the creature trample. Also, it can gain flying just has to be after the hammer is equipped.

Crystal Slipper Free Haste enabler that can replace messenger's speed.

Embercleave An instant speed powerhouse.

Wings of Hubris Another way to give flying.

Knight of the Ebon Legion Just a good 1 drop knight.

I don't know your budget but most of the equipment I listed is still standard. Overall my recommendation is more lands and more equipment.

oliveoilonyaasscureshemorrhoid on Tiana; Like an Enchantress but... Not

I would fix your mana base first. Average EDH decks have 45 mana sources, and Tiana definitely needs it, so consider more lands or rocks like Gilded Lotus/Boros Cluestone/Commander's Sphere/Fire Diamond/Marble Diamond etc etc. Fiery Mantle/Dragon Breath could replace Mark of Fury/Goblin War Paint? Guise of Fire/Bonds of Faith/Prophetic Ravings could replace Bloodshed Fever/Hammerhand/Cartouche of Zeal? Graceblade Artisan is a great duplicate of Champion of the Flame, it could replace Favored Hoplite/Call To Serve. If you want more combat map control you could run Goblin Spymaster/Overwhelming Splendor. Immolation/Inferno Fist are good duplicates of Ordeal of Purphoros.

Other than these replacements, I think you made a fine deck. I would include more finishers like Shiv's Embrace/Splinter Twin/Elemental Mastery/Burning Anger/Battle Mastery, or include a combo with Battered Golem/Paradox Engine/Endbringer/Traxos, Scourge of Kroog. I think some weaker finishers in this deck right now are Giant Spectacle/Lightning Reflexes/Madcap Skills/Lightning Talons. And I think Gift of Immortality is alright, but it doesn't protect your auras in extension if a creature-only board wipe happens, so another indestructible spells would be better.

I like the neat combo of Pariah and Tiana, and your enchantment based draw engines + Auratog/Faith Healer is another neat combo. Curse of Opulence is a great include, it's a one drop that adds influences damage away from you and toward your 120 combined life goal. Umbra Mystic/Anax and Cymede/Heavenly Blademaster are also great includes!

warren667 on Burn it Down

In the description you said your main goal is to Burn the opponent down and creatures are just a backup plan. If this is truly the case here are a few suggestions.

Every deck with red has Lightning Bolt because it is the strongest common and you should consider investing in them.

-2 Assembled Alphas -1 Clear a Path +3 Guttersnipe gutter snipe is faster than the alphas in multiple ways and fits the flavor very well.

Searing Blaze, Lightning Storm, Magma Jet, Skullcrack, Shard Volleythese are all great cheap burn spells that can replace Weapon Surge, Tormenting Voice, Cathartic Reunion, Hijack Lava Axe, Lightning Talons Seismic Stomp, Talons of Falkenrath, Hammerhand

-2Speedway Fanatic -2 Scourge Wolf + 4Hellspark Elemental-2Rummaging Goblin -2 Dragon Hatchling + 4Keldon Marauders-2Ruinous Gremlin -2 Insolent Neonate +4 Spark Elemental

12 Creatures is plenty for a burn deck so any extras I didn't name can become burn spells.

With all of that said it looks like you are a actually pushing for a more creature dmg based deck with all of the combat tricks and enchants that you added in the original deck. If this is the case I would direct you to this deck for something to gain inspiration from https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/474720#online

MagicalHacker on Boros Forever!

Hey!

So the deck looks pretty good! I can see a good theme of aggressive creature that also do other stuff, like anthem all your creatures, so it looks like this can beat down pretty hard pretty quickly.

You mentioned that you find yourself in topdeck mode pretty often, and I can see why. I usually aim for 10-14 cards that draw more cards, and I only see 2 here (Staff of Nin and Reforge the Soul.) A lot of people will say that Boros just can't draw spells, but those people are wrong. Now, Boros isn't the most efficient at drawing cards, but it's not out of their reach. Get ready for a wall of text, because here are all your options:

Pursuit of Knowledge, Sorcerer's Strongbox, Slate of Ancestry, Dreamstone Hedron, Magus of the Wheel, Knollspine Dragon, Commune with Lava, Wheel of Fortune, Wheel of Fate, Mentor of the Meek, Bygone Bishop, Stromkirk Occultist, Sin Prodder, Prophetic Flamespeaker, Outpost Siege, Chandra, Pyromaster, Chandra, Flamecaller, Well of Discovery, Urza's Blueprints, Tower of Fortunes, Thran Tome, Tamiyo's Journal, Sword of Fire and Ice, Skullclamp, Rogue's Gloves, Moonring Mirror, Mind's Eye, Mask of Memory, Loreseeker's Stone, Infiltration Lens, Illuminated Folio, Farsight Mask, Endbringer, Bottled Cloister, Bargaining Table, Book of Rass, and Angelheart Vial.

Of these, I'm going to suggest the following eight to bring your number up to ten (obviously Mind's Eye, Sword of Fire and Ice, Chandra, Flamecaller, and Wheel of Fortune are the absolute best, but they are all above $5, unlike the following cards):

  1. Skullclamp
  2. Mentor of the Meek
  3. Outpost Siege
  4. Chandra, Pyromaster
  5. Knollspine Dragon
  6. Magus of the Wheel
  7. Slate of Ancestry
  8. Mask of Memory

So what 8 cards to take out? Let's find out which are the least impact, and let's start from the highest cmc, because getting a lower curve is never bad.

  • Captain of the Watch: This card is great in a soldier tribal, but too low impact in this deck, I think. With only 10 cards that get the boost from her, on average, it will only interact with 1-2 cards at a time.
  • Lightmine Field: I can understand wanting some pillow fort, but there are plenty of options that don't affect your creatures too, and you are going wide, so this card hoses you pretty bad.
  • Ajani Vengeant: His plus is very situational, and even though the other abilities are pretty good, him sometimes not doing anything until then is kind of a waste of a card here.
  • Sword of Vengeance: I like having a lot of abilities to get the boost from cards like Concerted Effort, but I think this card is just too expensive for too little. None of the abilities are necessities in the deck to be on one creature.
  • Skyknight Legionnaire: French vanillas are sometimes cool, but this one here is not worth 3 mana. There are better hasty creatures and better fliers for 3 mana, so I don't think its necessary to have them both on one creature since they don't really combo in any way.
  • Lightning Talons: This pretty much has the flaws of both above cards, plus the fact that it's an aura means that it opens yourself to a 2-for-1.
  • Godsend: This isn't really an equipment-themed deck, and there are better equipment for a deck going wide, like Sword of the Paruns. Overall, it's not a horrible card, but paying six mana to give a creature +3/+3 and exiling "deathtouch" doesn't seem that worth it here.
  • Asha's Favor: Again with the keywords, and the auras, and the three mana!

So those are the 8 cards I would take out for the drawing cards.

If you are interested, here are some cards I think would definitely make this deck more resilient!

First, a deck with lots of creatures is going to be weak to board wipes, so here are some cards that will protect you from those: Selfless Spirit, Avacyn, Angel of Hope, and Eldrazi Monument.

Secondly, there are a couple of super aggro cards for edh that I think you could take advantage of, although be wary because these can make you an early target if played too soon: Luminarch Ascension, Serra Ascendant, and Hero of Bladehold.

Lastly, every deck needs a couple of easy ways to pick off nasty creatures, so I would recommend using Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, and Darksteel Mutation (which turns off commanders!) as some pretty good spot removal cards.

Thanks, and good luck!

Lightning Talons is too narrow if you ask me. And when it falls of, its gone instead of equipment.

I would go more equiment style and avoid local enchantments all together.

DeathChant17 on No Whine With My Cheese, Please

It's a decent buff and vigilance is nice to have. Plus if anyone plays one of those "gain control of all creatures, untap and swing them" red spells, at least you can't get hit with Narset. I'd use it.

Other good enchantments in addition to the ones I mentioned are:

Bonds of Faith, Battle Mastery, Daybreak Coronet, Ethereal Armor, and Unquestioned Authority.

I use all of them in my Zur the Enchanter deck except Sphere of Safety. Since I run Zur I'm not very familiar with red enchantments. There is Dragon Mantle to give narset fire-breathing, Errantry is perfect for narset, Fearsome Temper, Giant Strength, Immolation, Lightning Talons, Madcap Skills, and probably plenty others.

TheDracogenius on Draw Deck

Sweet that you want to build a Niv Mizzet deck!

If you truly want this deck to be as good as it can be, you will have a lot of work to do. You have many suboptimal and some generally unplayable cards in your deck and I hope I can help you identify them:

  1. Refocus is really weak. It does not have a high upside. Sure you can use it with Arcanis, but that will never be the case. In general this will be draw 1 or 2 ( if you use it with Niv) which is not that great in comparison to other cards with better synergy. Brainstorm, Preordain and Serum Visions all do its job better.

  2. Telling Time is worse than every card I just listed and does not even draw the card, but rather puts them into your hand, so it has no synergy.

  3. Lightning Javelin is even undesirable in limited play, which usually means that it is unplayable in EDH. Burn spells are very weak in the format because of the massive life total and huge creatures. If you feel like you need extra burn besides Niv Mizzet, just use spells like Comet Storm or Starstorm or even Devil's Play, but not these narrow type of cards. In EDH three things are most important: the spell needs to be scalable, the spell needs to be versatile and has to be very good at what it does. This thing meet none of the categories, so it is most likely very bad.

  4. Traitorous Instinct is a one time use Threaten, which is horrible without sacrafice outlets. Taking a creature just for one turn is not worth it, it does not even have any synergy with the rest of the deck, so there is no point in keeping it around.

  5. Flameblast Dragon has the same problem. Is it a strong beater? Yes! Does that matter? No! Just vanilla creatures that do not support your theme weaken your deck. Spending your whole turn to pay for its ability is not what you want.

  6. Pilgrim's Eye is just worse than Burnished Hart. The Hart is amazing, the Eye not so much. Just use any other mana rock of you want to ramp.

  7. Salvage Droneis horribly unplayable in limited, and basically a skipped draw step in commander. Its impact is negledgible, if you can eben call it that. A 1/1 for 1 should better have a freaking powerful ability to make it into your deck, but this thing is just pathetic.

  8. Tyrant's Familiar is very strong, but it strenghtens a gameplan that is not support et by your deck. Niv Mizzet is about as synergy heavy as you can get, with every card either drawing cards for burn or removing threats. This thing does neither.

  9. Lightning Talons is bad. There are very strong abilities for commander, like Hexproof, Indestructible and Unblockable. First strike is not one of these, and the power buff will make no impact, because your prima win condition is not to beat down.

  10. EVERY SINGLE HOWLING MINE EFFECT! The point of the deck is too beat your opponents by card advantage, so why do you want to X for 1 yourself every upkeep? WHilfe you draw one, your opponents are drawing also one. With four opponents you get one card while they get three combined! You see the problem? Just use single mass card draw effects, as they will be mich better. With Howling Mine you just shoot yourself in the foot.

In general you should try to focus the deck. Figure out a way to win, either by combo or other ways and only include cards for that strategy. Look for a way to stream line it. I did not want to be mean or say that all of these cards are unplayable, they just do not fit into a deck like this. Using the same staple cards can get boring, but there are still underused cards that are better than these.

Feel free to look through my Niv Mizzet Primer if you want to get some more inspiration for cards to use in the deck!

Have fun tinkering with and playing with the deck!
