Shard Volley Discussion

guttersnipe is just terrible in modern.. 3 mana that could easily have just been another bolt, and there is a million better options than shock, most of which are fairly cheap.

some shock replacements include:

Wild Slash

Flame Slash

Searing Blaze

Skullcrack

Shard Volley

Deflecting Palm

Collateral Damage

Gut Shot

Molten Rain

Chained to the Rocks

guttersnipe could be replaced by plenty of lower cmc creatures not seen in regular burn decks

Young Pyromancer

Firebrand Archer

Kiln Fiend

Goblin Arsonist / Goblin Grenade

Mogg Fanatic

Keldon Marauders

Seeker of the Way

Soul-Scar Mage

Abbot of Keral Keep

sideboard you could and should run more artfact and enchantment hate like

Fragmentize

Wear / Tear

Smash to Smithereens

or even just the very basics in Smelt and Demystify

for example: vs burn on the draw. it is best if i can take out Eidolon of the Great Revel and Forked Bolt . if i take out Shard Volley then i will only have Dragon's Claw to put in. Molten Rain is not bad against multicolor burn, but it is better on the play. maybe i should side in Smash to Smithereens to counter possible Dragon's Claw and Ensnaring Bridge .. 3d chess doe

etron is pretty even, and depends on their hand.. all i can sideboard right now against it is Shard Volley and Smash to Smithereens in and Eidolon of the Great Revel and Forked Bolt out. hard to say what is that best thing to do about this matchup.. Chalice of the Void stops Shard Volley unless i get Smash to Smithereens .. no doubt Molten Rain would help. maybe i can take Shard Volley out of the sideboard. it is there for matches where i have more cards i want to take out of the mainboard, and nothing else to put in.

after some testing I put 4 Skewer the Critics in. after some research i decided to take Skullcrack out for now. it is a favorite of mine but the arguments against it are strong. I added Relic of Progenitus to the sideboard because it is useful against many common decks, though i am not totally sold. I moved Shard Volley to the sideboard as a replacement for bad cards depending on the match up. I filled the main board with Viashino Pyromancer .

I run mono red burn myself. One thing I love is all of the different bolt options there are. I'd up the Rift Bolt count to 4 as well as add 4 Skewer the Critics . If you want to, you can go the hyper aggressive route of entirely 1 mana spells with Shard Volley and Light Up the Stage . It works really well because everything off of light up the stage is super cheap and easy to play, and you can afford to sacrifice lands due to the low curve. I know they aren't instants, but outside of burning the turn 1 mana dork, burn is a largely linear and non-interactive deck. I prefer to use awesome 2 drops like Eidolon of the Great Revel , Searing Blaze , or Searing Blood . For your sideboard, I would switch out Relic of Progenitus with Tormod's Crypt , simply because you can use that 1 extra mana on a burn spell.

A word on Eidolon. Yes, he hurts you. No, it shouldn't matter. Your life total doesn't matter if your opponent is at 0. He'll hurt the opponent first, because you already tapped out and played all your spells. He's very effective if the opponent play Elves, Storm, Affinity, etc. The more competitive the deck, the better he does. He easily does 8 damage in a game. 8 for RR? That's an effective burn spell. It's like a cheaper version of Risk Factor .

Pretty solid but I would cut the Shock s for a more powerful card like Shard Volley , Skullcrack , or Lava Spike . Other good burn cards are Bedlam Reveler , or Magma Jet . Also try and consider Guttersnipe and/or Searing Blaze

Few things I would like to say. I think with burn, we haven't figured out which spectacle card is more powerful ( Light Up the Stage vs Skewer the Critics ). However, I will say, they do not play nicely with each other. Since they both have activation costs, you may often find yourself with both cards in hand and no way to cast them for their discounted price. As such, I recommend going with the more constant option of Skewer the Critics .

A side note, though Shard Volley is sometimes used in burn, it is often only seen as a one-of or two-of because of the steep cost associated with it. Furthermore, it is terrible in multiples. I would recommend another creature, like Goblin Guide or Eidolon of the Great Revel here, or some anti-creature cards like Searing Blaze / Searing Blood . These are much more useful, versatile, and do not two for one yourself.

You could also consider, Atarka's Command or Skullcrack as a one or two-of. Atarka's Command especially works well with your prowess creatures.
