Wither first strike confusion!

Asked by Volpes 9 years ago

Hey guys! My Q is: Lets say i have Ashenmoor Gouger + Lightning Talons and a Everlasting Torment in play. Its my turn i play Kulrath Knight then attack with Ashenmoor Gouger he blocks with Avatar of Might --> Now will my Ashenmoor Gouger receive the combat dmg wont it? (had some discussion, someone saying Avatar couldnt "strike back" is this true?)

So you have a 7/4 with first strike that deals damage as though it had wither.

During the first combat damage step, Ashenmoor Gouger will deal 7 damage to Avatar of Might , putting seven -1/-1 counters on Avatar of Might due to Everlasting Torment .

Then, during the second combat damage step, Avatar of Might will deal 1 damage to Ashenmoor Gouger .

Kulrath Knight 's last ability only prevents creatures from being declared as attacking or blocking creatures. It doesn't interfere with attacking or blocking creatures that later have counters placed on them.

In this board state, Ashenmoor Gouger is a 7/4 first striker. When your opponent blocks with Avatar of Might , the combat damage step is split into two parts. In the first damage step (where creatures with first strike or double strike deal damage), your Ashenmoor Gouger will deal seven points of damage to the Avatar of Might in the form of -1/-1 counters. This will make the Avatar a 1/1 before the second damage step, meaning that it will not deal enough damage to kill your Ashenmoor Gouger . The damage the Avatar deals will also be as a single -1/-1 counter.

At the end of combat, you will have a 6/3 first striker with a -1/-1 counter on it, and your opponent will have a 1/1 with seven -1/-1 counters on it.

Yes, the Avatar of Might will deal it's damage back.

Sure, it has a status that it "can't block" after first strike damage happened, but that doesn't matter, because it already has blocked. It's not going to be removed from combat at this point.
