Uncle Karl's Puzzle Basement

Commander / EDH*

Lifelink EDH deck. Its a lot of fun to play so far. Because Karlov is so cheap, this deck can tend to make you a target early in the game because of how big he can get only a couple turns after being played.

There are 30 cards that will let you gain life one way or another whether it be creatures with lifelink, cards with Extort, or other cards that gain you life when something triggers it. Each time you gain life Karlov will get 2 +1/+1 counters. Cards like Polluted Bonds,Authority of the Consuls, and Kambal, Consul of Allocation will gain you life whenever your opponents play certain spells. Cards like Blind Obedience and Pontiff of Blight will let you extort to gain life. Then there are cards like Aetherflux Reservoir that will let you gain life anytime you play a spell and Suture Priest which gains you life for playing creatures and punishes your opponents for doing the same. The idea to is to steal or gain as much life as possible in order to boost karlov and use him as a pretty big blocker or attacker while waiting to be able to put more aggressive creatures on the board. You can also use his ability to exile creatures you would otherwise not be able to deal with.

If you are able to get either Sanguine Bond,Vizkopa Guildmage,or Defiant Bloodlord on the board with Exquisite Blood, you can create an infinite combo to to win the game. If you do manage to get out that combo, just one tap of Pristine Talisman or playing a spell and extorting could potentially win you the game.Pristine Talisman is a great card to get out early because it will help to produce a little extra mana while also gaining you life and triggering Karlov for each tap.

Celestial Mantle and Sanguine Bond is also a pretty nasty combo. celestial mantle will double your life whenever the creature it's on deals damage and then sanguine bond will deal what you just gained to an opponent easily netting you 20+ damage probably higher because my life total almost always stays between 40 and 55 with this deck throughout most of every game.

You will want to play Karlov of the Ghost Council by turn two because he will get very big very fast with all the lifegain this deck has to offer.

If you're lucky enough to get authority of consuls and Kambal, Consul of Allocation in your opening hand you can play Authority of the Consuls turn one, Karlov of the Ghost Council turn two, and Kambal, Consul of Allocation turn three; this will give you a running head start because you will then be gaining life and boosting karlov for every spell your opponents play. You can stack +1/+1 counters onto Karlov very quickly during all of your opponents turns with that combo. Then use him to remove creatures or attack for lots of commander damage. Even without this combo out I've gotten Karlov to over 20 +1/+1 counters in a game no problem and then you could either use Rogue's Passage or Whispersilk Cloak to make him unblockable and deal more than 20 commander damage to an opponent.

Aetherflux Reservoir can also win you the game very easily if you get it out with Exquisite Blood. Those 2 cards plus a life total of at least 51 and you smack every opponent for 50 damage without paying a single mana.

There are also lots of flying creatures as well as other cards like Crested Sunmare, Odric, Lunarch Marshal, Angelic Skirmisher, Victory's Herald, and Vault of the Archangel that can make just attacking a viable option to win as well.

Over all it's a fun deck to play so far. It can be a little bit weak to control and decks with lots of creatures because you will rarely have more than 3 or 4 creatures on your board. Also if anyone else is running Erebos, God of the Dead that could stop this deck dead in its tracks but fortunately there's enough removal in this deck that you should be able to kill erebos should that happen.

Updates Add

Ran into some issues with not having enough cards in hand later in the game. I made some cuts and added Erebos, God of the Dead, Tamiyo's Journal, and Well of Lost Dreams to help alleviate this problem. I guess I'll see how that goes next time I play in a couple weeks. Also toying with swapping in Tymna the Weaver as commander to help combat this as well.
