Soul of Theros Discussion

nlidmaster on B/W Lifelink Deathtouch Vampires

Im also trying to make a BW deck myself. Serra Avatar and Soul of Theros are really cool cards, but can only function in a commander deck since they cost so much to play. Id recommend removing them. Maybe replace them with Yahenni, Undying Partisan which benefits from the deathtouch and kill cards you have. Also, instead of Murder, I would use Mortify, since it does the same thing but also targets enchantments. Tragic Slip might also be helpful since your deck will be killing a lot of things anyways which will trigger its second ability. Youre going to want some one mana cost creatures if youre going to play this in modern. Since you have lots of vampires, I recommend Indulgent Aristocrat. He can pump up your other creatures, and has the added benefit of triggering tragic slips second ability. Lastly, for your mana base, put in a Vault of the Archangel or two. Boom, everything has deathtouch and lifelink.

First of all, I love your description! It's very flavorful.

As for the deck: piles and piles of cheap creatures can work really well in 20-life formats, but I feel like you'll run out of gas in the 40 life formats. Your early-game is strong; but I feel like you need more late-game card advantage to keep the pressure on.

First, again, I'd run more than 32 lands. Seems light.

Second, look into some artifacts that can draw you some cards so you can keep up the aggression. Slate of Ancestry would work really well with your huge collection of soldiers. Mind's Eye is outstanding in multiplayer. Staff of Nin does card-advantage and some light removal, but 6 is a lot of mana. Howling Mine is cheap, but helps your opponents too, so you have to be careful.

Lastly, I'd see if you can get a few more creatures that buff the team. The original Boros lieutenant is pretty bonkers: Agrus Kos, Wojek Veteran. The red/white god is pretty nuts as well: Iroas, God of Victory. Soul of Theros is gross if you've got some mana to pour into it.

p.s., if you like the "Gustcloak" effect, check out Reconnaissance. It's was a balanced card when they printed it in the 90's, but the rules for combat have changed since then, and the card has not. Now it's super busted if you know how to abuse it.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE UNCOMFORTABLY ENERGETIC (you know, minus all the actual energy and stuff...)?

Siege-Gang Commander, Ogre Battledriver/ In the Web of War, Elspeth, Sun's Champion, True Conviction and/or Soul of Theros to keep the damage coming, and off of you. Especially if you're taking your licks to allow other people to be king for a little while. Oh. And Impact Tremors for days. Please. Less blue mage-y business up in here. Also, please keep the spells to your own turn with Price of Glory.

I would take out Heliod, God of the Sun, Gift of Immortality, Spirit Bonds, Insurrection and other super high CMC cards if we want to run only 34 lands + rocks, as well as anything super expensive we're going to have to save up for at the moment.

Go get playtesting!!!

I would say, if you're going critters plus burn, I would start with Cryptolith Rite, Ashnod's Altar and Burn at the Stake as go-to spells that are (at least relatively) inexpensive pickups.

Buff them with Bow of Nylea, Soul of Theros, Ogre Battledriver, Gahiji, Honored One, Iroas, God of Victory, and Second Harvest.

And further advantage can be taken to draw cards and kill things with Perilous Forays, Mentor of the Meek, Garruk's Packleader, Impact Tremors, Warstorm Surge, and Bygone Bishop.

From there, add a little ramp, and make a bunch of tokens, maybe add a little populate for seasoning, and go!

@ ArTr

I've been giving it a lot of thought, searching for replacement cards for Tower of Fortunes and trying to make this deck token focussed, but that all failed. This deck just isnt meant to be a full-fledged token deck. I want to have big tokens, things like Secure the Wastes and White Sun's Zenith among other cards just change the dynamic of the deck too much. It would just become a completely different deck. Because of this I've decided to scratch Soul of Theros out, I dont think its worth it. Serra Avatar is also a no-go, it asks too much from this deck, its better in deck that focus on lifegain, like you said.

So changing the style of this deck into a lifegain or token deck didnt work out, but I was still thinking about Avacyn, Guardian Angel. If I would want to go for an extreme control deck, with lot's of exile and lot's of taxes, Ghostly Prison might be great. I've theorycrafted with Thalia, Guardian of Thraben (which I should probably take out fo my sideboard), Vryn Wingmare, Magus of the Tabernacle and Windborn Muse among other cards. Ghostly Prison together with Archangel of Tithes makes it impossible to attack me. Even if they get 1 strong creature through, I can use Avacyn, Guardian Angel and block without taking any risks. This buys me time for Luminarch Ascension, Entreat the Angels and maybe a slowly killing startegy featuring Rogue's Passage.

I think this kind of deck is really interesting and I really like it personally. It removes any of the flaws I think this deck has, and it just blends in really well. And of course, most importantly, your name suggestion of angel prison becomes way better if I actually feature Ghostly Prison. If I follow through with this plan (need to do a lot of playtesting) Ill name the deck something like that cause you helped get me on the idea with your Avacyn, Guardian Angel suggestion. If this all fails, Ill just put all this in my sideboard.

What do you think about this taxes kinda playstyle?
