AAAAAAgainst the Odds Time

This is my casual, against-the-odds style deck based of a fascinating commander, Phage the Untouchable . Secondarily, this deck is built to take advantage of the enchantment, Lich's Mastery . The general point to this deck is to get down a Lich’s Mastery, to suit up Phage to attack, and to draw a BUNCH of cards along the way using Lich’s Mastery’s ability.

Is this a risky plan? Yes. Is it fun when it goes off? Yes. That’s all I care about.

Noteable Items

As with almost any deck, there are a few items that make this deck tick. Below are some of the more noteable items that might be useful.

Phage Setup

It’s All About The Setup

The Phage strategy is the most straightforward part of this deck, but it does require some setup. The consequences of not setting it up can be … catastrophic.

1. Step 1 – Clogging up the board. There are many creatures in black that can look big and scary, which they may or might not be. The point would be that my opponents waste their removal, counters, and sweepers by the time that Phage comes out. The mass card draw in the deck helps to ensure that I get down some threats earlier on in the game. Also with so many other threats at the table, what’s 4 damage going to do to them?


2. Step 2 – Getting to Phage’s high mana cost. For this, we take some black mana-doubling cards, that I swear should be green ramp cards, and ramp into our high converted mana cost cards in no time.


3. Step 3 – Giving Phage Evasion. There are many ways that we can go about it. Some of the earlier threats can make our opponents sacrifice their permanents. We can also equip up Phage with hexproof, first strike, unblockable, and other things to make sure Phage survives combat. Sometimes, adding in a little trample like on Chariot of Victory can really help because it only takes 1 damage to kill an opponent with Phage.

Building Around Lich's Mastery

Balance and Card Draw ... and more Card Draw

In order to build around Lich's Mastery, there are a two items that are very relevant on this card.

1. If it’s removed from the battlefield, you’re dead
2. Gaining life = drawing cards

Protect Yo’self Before You Wreck Yo’self

Lich's Mastery gives us a bone here by being hexproof, and as such there are 2 common ways to get rid of it, board wipes and damaging us. Black doesn’t have very many good ways to protect against board wipes, so I focused on “damage mitigation”. The theory is if you have a hand full of cards, then you have plenty to exile in the case of damage. With that in mind, I have creatures with lifelink to protect against combat damage and to draw us more cards.

Gaining Life …. And Cards

Due to Lich's Mastery ’s ability whenever we gain life, then we draw cards, and if there is one thing that I like to do, it’s draw cards. With that being the case, lifegain is a strong sub-theme of this build to keep me alive and draw A LOT of cards.
