Mask of Avacyn Discussion

NV_1980 on Kaalia of the Vast

Hi,

Kaalia is an amazing commander, but because she is so powerful, she is also the primary target of every other player once she hits the battlefield. Therefore, my advice to you starts with: add some more protection in here for Kaalia :) My recommendations would be: Swiftfoot Boots, Mask of Avacyn and/or Whispersilk Cloak. If you want to make things a bit more expensive, try Champion's Helm. A relatively cheap creature that can also provide some extra protection for her: Eight-and-a-Half-Tails.

Kaalia needs to appear on the battlefield asap, in order for your deck to shine. So, the second thing I would recommend is to try and increase the speed of this deck by either adding some mana rocks like Fellwar Stone, Worn Powerstone or Thran Dynamo OR add some land fetching cards like Burnished Hart, Solemn Simulacrum, Oreskos Explorer or if you're feeling like a big-spender: Weathered Wayfarer or Land Tax.

Once Kaalia is on the battlefield, you want her to attack as often as possible to trigger her ability multiple times per turn. So, you need some cards that will allow her to attack more than once per turn, if possible. You already have Aurelia for this. Some other options are: Seize the Day, Relentless Assault and World at War. In case you have money to spend, Aggravated Assault is also wonderful.

These are my main points of advice. I would also recommend you add some stuff that allows you to draw some extra cards each turn (like Phyrexian Arena and Underworld Connections) and stuff that protects Kaalia when she attacks (Dolmen Gate and Reconnaissance come to mind).

I also have a Rhonas deck (it's my favorite), during my play testing I found the biggest key was getting Rhonas out quickly but then the challenge was keeping him turned on with big creatures. I run 36 creatures in my deck 23 of them having power 4+.I havn't uploaded the list but if you would like I can or I could sent you its word document.I wanted to suggest two cards to you that really changed the game for me Nissa, Vital Force and Mask of Avacyn Nissa lets you turn a forest into a 5/5 until your next turn keeping Rhonas on to attack and be able to block if you need to. The Mask is great because I found Rhonas being targeted, indestructible is great but the mask is extra insurance.BTW Lure is an amazing one sided board wipe due to death touch and I'm glad to see it on your list.

Some cheap cards I can think of off the top of my head that might be worth getting for this deck would be Arcanum Wings, Wild Defiance, Mask of Avacyn, Jhessian Infiltrator, Troll Ascetic and of course Slippery Bogle. Sigil of Sleep also pairs well with Invisible Stalker.

Looking nice so far!! Here are some suggestions from my experience, fellow Kaalia player :)

As far as creatures go, pretty much just play the ones you like!

Some less-budget suggestions: Master of Cruelties, pretty much instant kill if they have no blockers. Rune-Scarred Demon, Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, Aurelia, the Warleader, Lord of the Void, Akroma, Angel of Wrath, Gisela, the Broken Blade. Those are some of my favorites. A little heavier on the budget but super fun!

Mid-budget options: Ob Nixilis, Unshackled, Platinum Angel, Anya, Merciless Angel, Mana-Charged Dragon, Rakdos, Lord of Riots, Angel of Despair, Mother of Runes, Deathless Angel, Hellkite Tyrant, Tariel, Reckoner of Souls, Blinding Angel, Overseer of the Damned, Akroma, Angel of Fury.

More budget-friendly options: Angel of Serenity, Angelic Arbiter, Indulgent Tormentor, Reya Dawnbringer, Harvester of Souls, Bloodgift Demon, Exquisite Archangel, Herald of the Host (For multiplayer), Angelic Skirmisher, Bruna, the Fading Light (to pair with Gisela), Seraph of the Sword, Guardian of the Gateless.

There are obviously numerous options as far as creatures go. Those are a couple of mine. But don't go off just what other people say- if you don't like the feel of killing someone outright with Master of Cruelties, don't get him! If you want to play a little more defensive you can run Seraph of the Sword and Guardian of the Gateless or something! Just play what you want to! :)

You may want to stay away from enchantment Auras, as they can get 2-for-1ed pretty easily. Gift of Immortality is great though, as it can come back to the field. Maybe opt for equipments instead, such as Fireshrieker in place of Battle Mastery and Prowler's Helm (which I see you have) or Whispersilk Cloak, which has the added benefit of shroud. Spectra Ward is a pretty good Aura, as it gives protection from all colors, making whichever creature (supposedly Kaalia) free to attack and block, without taking any damage. But again if someone plays Day of Judgment, it'll get 2-for-1ed.

Not really sure about the curses. I personally probably wouldn't run them, but they seem fun!

Dragon Tempest is a good include. Give all your fliers haste!

That being said you might want to not have too many at all. Mainly equipment to protect Kaalia, like Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, and Mask of Avacyn or equipment of the like.

You definitely want ramp, and I see you have some. The appropriate signets, Commander's Sphere, Darksteel Ingot, probably the cluestones (They can draw you cards, which is usually more useful than getting a small creature until end of turn, as with the keyrunes).

You have quite a bit of removal which can be good! Sometimes you can have too much though, and that is occasionally my problem. You have some good target removal and a couple good board wipes. I have Earthquake in my deck, although I haven't found it super useful yet. Merciless Eviction, Hallowed Burial, Planar Cleansing, akroma's wrath, Fumigate, and maybe even Torment of Hailfire are good. But as with creatures, there are tons of options for board wipes.
Land bases can be pretty rough to figure out, not to mention expensive. Going super budget, obviously the guildgates, lifegain lands (Scoured Barrens, etc.), bounce lands (Boros Garrison, etc.), other dual lands (Forsaken Sanctuary, etc.). All the basics. Other useful, cheap lands include Exotic Orchard, Rupture Spire, and the pain lands like Caves of Koilos and Battlefield Forge.

If you're going to spend a little more, the check lands like Clifftop Retreat and Dragonskull Summit are great. Scry lands such as Temple of Malice and be very useful. Obviously fetchlands and shocklands are good, but not friendly to the budget at all. I don't think they're worth it sometimes. But everything is up to you! :)

Hopefully these suggestions help! I've said it a lot, but play whatever you think will be the most fun for you! Good luck in the building process- I'll be following along to see how it goes! :)

The only cards that I thought looked a little under-powered were Decimator of the Provinces, Mossbridge Troll, and Seed Guardian.

If you are interested Aspect of Mongoose, and Mask of Avacyn are some low mana cost cards if you need extra protection. The best part about those cards is that they can be reused.

jakethewhale007: Thank you for your interest in the deck! :)

The MLD package is definitely helpful, although I feel I owe you a warning that it WILL draw a lot of hate from most playgroups.

Of your changes, I'd probably run Armageddon or Alms Collector over Chandra Ablaze: she's somewhat disappointing out of red spellslinger IMO. I'd also consider running Coldsteel Heart over Star Compass (since it lets you mana fix), and Dowsing Dagger  Flip as an additional source of ramp/power. I'd also use Lightning Greaves over Mask of Avacyn - I'm aware of the downsides of shroud, but I suspect the free equip is good enough in your variant of the list to overcome that. The rest of the changes seem very reasonable :)

Given that the loss of fast ramp will slow down the temp somewhat, you could run some more late-game midrange effects like Repercussion and Cloudshift?

I hope that helps :)

First off, I am in love with this deck! Very well done; it seems like a work of art. I really want to build this deck, but I am constraining myself to a ~$250 budget. I'd still like it to be as competitive as possible for that pricepoint, although I acknowledge that I'll have to make sacrifices until I can acquire some of the better cards. I am thinking that the best way for me to keep it competitive at this lower price point is to run the MLD package (unless you think it would be stronger without it). I would be very grateful for any insight you could offer.

1) Based on your response to someone else, you recommended removing Aggravated Assault and Argentum Armor for Ruination and Cataclysm. You also recommended removing Gift of Immortality for Armageddon, but to be honest, I am having such a hard time making that cut because of all the synergy that Gift has with the creatures in this deck. Is that really the best cut to make room for it?

2) I've made the following budget changes to your list to fit within my constraints, but I would love to hear your feedback about my changes and if I ended up going off the rails and altering it too much. I will provide a link to my list below, but the summary of changes I made are as follows:

OUT: Land Tax, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Memory Jar, Mox Opal, Scroll Rack, Umezawa's Jitte, Wheel of Fortune, Sword of Fire and Ice, Aggravated Assault, Argentum Armor

IN: Rogue's Gloves, Mind Stone, Worn Powerstone, Reforge the Soul, Star Compass, Mask of Memory, Mask of Avacyn, Chandra Ablaze, Scythe of the Wretched, Ruination, Cataclysm.

I know some of those inclusions might seem a bit janky. My thought process was that, since Land Tax and Scroll Rack are a draw engine, I would replace them with Rogue's Gloves and Mask of Memory, which also draw. In place of the 3 mana rocks I cut, I swapped them with Mind Stone, Star Compass, and Worn Powerstone. Finally, I substituted Memory Jar with Reforge the Soul, which has a similar wheel effect for the same cmc (or less with miracle), and I substituted Wheel of Fortune with Chandra Ablaze (mini wheel that will probably get value from forcing opponents to discard larger hands and draw to 3). I substituted the sword of fire and ice with the scythe, because that sword generates value, which the scythe seems to come the closest to replicating for a cheaper price (the only difference being that I get to summon the blocking creature instead of drawing a card and pinging something for 2).

Do these sound like reasonable changes to preserve the spirit of the deck? If you have other suggestions, I am definitely open to hearing them.

For more protection on a budget you could add in Cloak and Dagger and Mask of Avacyn.
