Mask of Avacyn Discussion

Dawn of Hope has been good. This deck's lifelinkers and lifegain Equipment get it going with few issues. The Soldier token works wonders with Equipment as well.
Sufficient incidental lifegain is all that's needed.

I think Mask of Avacyn outclasses Champion's Helm in this deck, and here's why. Basically the main argument is that it costs one less mana to play overall (even though it costs more to equip). Obviously with Balan equip costs don't matter, and thus it is a good substitution. Now, you may be thinking to yourself, "but then it costs more to equip to my other creatures." Well, my argument is that is irrelevant because Champion's Helm doesn't even give hexproof to most of your creatures (with the exception of two of them). All it is doing is giving them a power and toughness boost, and I would quickly trade out +1 power for hexproof any day. Hexproof in my eyes is worth the two extra mana it takes to equip, especially when you are more often going to be equipping it for less with Balan.
Basically what Im trying to say is that the helm is useless for anything but Balan, and the mask costs less to play while also having a use for other creatures.

I think you seriously need some card draw, too.
I like the build! +1

I like your creative approach here. I really think you should consider running some of the protective equipment to take care of your commander. Swiftfoot Boots , Mask of Avacyn , and with blue in the deck, you could also run Neurok Stealthsuit , all of which are pretty good budget option.
I think you should also consider running some sac outlets, that way if you see something nicer you want to steal with Rubinia, you don't have to give the other creature back. Criminally underplayed sac outlets like Fanatical Devotion and Martyr's Cause would also double up as protection cards. Carnage Altar is pretty non-threatening and provides card draw, and Spawning Pit is nice in that it doesn't instantly scream "COMBO ENGINE" when it hits the board.
Some flicker effects might also let you make the most out of ETB effects from creatures that steal stuff. Flickering Altered Ego every turn could get terribly annoying. If you could afford a Gilded Drake , it get's really annoying. But, you aren't running a critical mass of creatures here, so that may not be worth considering.
Again, love the idea here. +1.

Also some stuff to protect your commander is very necessary, I have an Arcades deck and I find him getting shot a lot with single target removal so get a Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves if you can afford them to try and keep Arcades around. Some cheaper options you can go for are Vanishing or Mask of Avacyn

Hey There! I've got a few suggestions, but I've never had the chance to play with or against this commander so take my suggestions with a grain of salt. I don't know what your budget is, so I'll start with the more expensive options and go down from there. Here goes:
Hammer of Nazahn - Indestructible is invaluable with voltron style commanders
Champion's Helm - hexproof is also invaluable
Foundry Inspector - makes your equipment cheaper
Chaos Warp - excellent mono red removal
Seize the Day - extra combat
Brass Squire - super cheap, nice with tons of equipment
Jhoira's Familiar - super cheap, makes all your equipment cheaper
Thermopod - interesting choice, can be used to sac all your elemental dudes for a boatload of mana
Burn at the Stake - if you don't swing with your elementals, you can nuke someone out of the game
Relentless Assault - more combats!
Mask of Avacyn - hexproof is very important
Whispersilk Cloak - shroud & Unblockable : be careful with this though, if a creature has shroud, you can't equip stuff to it, so this would have to go on last.
I have a bunch more but i'll hold off until I get a better idea if I'm on the right track. :P

I'd like to say that I am sure we all realize the need and desire to run Maralen of the Mornsong ; You get a free tutor every turn for just 3 life. You also lock down draw engines, putting a nail in the tire of any deck that wants to out-speed you.
The problem is you also give everyone an answer. They get to find that silver bullet to blow up your Thrumming Stone , to wrath your rats, to end your game.
Though they can just blow up the artifact first.
Idk. But layer yourself appropriately.

Ok, let's go THCue!
As far as lands go, I completely agree with you. One of my (very) long term plans is to replace all slow lands with more efficient duals. I guess it'll happen over time, otherwise I'll just put in some basics instead. My main concern is that "good" duals like Watery Grave , Morphic Pool etc. are very pricy and I don't think they'll go down any time soon.
- I have a Crawlspace in my binder, I might as well try it myself. I wanted to stray from pillowforting, but it's a bit of a necessity in deck's like these after all.
- Mask of Avacyn is good protection, but doesn't grant haste. Actually, only Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves do such double function and I'm happy with them, as of now.
- Mind Grind is very powerful, but needs a lot of mana to be useful, something I'm sometimes struggling to get to. I have it in the binder, I might try it again sometime.
- Ritual of Soot is a good selective wrath, but I feel like it might not impact the board enough to be really useful, at least in my meta.
- Regarding the fact of having tapped creatures, I must tell you that it's not a problem actually. When a creature is not affected by summoning sickness anymore, you can tap it for Phenax's ability. This doesn't mean that you have to do it right away. I usually keep the creature/s untapped for the whole rotation and tap them to mill only in response at my last opponent's end step (right before the start of my next turn). This means they stay untapped for the whole rotation!
