This is a combo-control deck centered around Azami, Lady of Scrolls. The deck started as a simple tribal wizards deck, before evolving into the current build. If you are interested in a deck that waits for the moment to combo, then read on and possibly critique some of my choices. In addition, I built the deck assuming the optional 10 card sideboard rule, to use Cunning Wish.

Introduction Show

Azami, Lady of Scrolls is notorious among more casual EDH tables for being a very "spikey" commander. This is due to the main method most of these decks employ; a combination of any combo that draws out the deck and some means to win. This deck is no different in that respect; we seek to win the game using a few possible key combos after achieving infinite draws and mana.

The distinction that must be made for the Azami deck is we do not seek to combo as quickly as possible. The deck's intended purpose is to use a suite of permission, and removal to slow down the opposition or to clear the way for our combo turn. This is made possible by the inherent card advantage our general can provide, but with some caution. When piloting the deck it is just as important to know when not to play out the general, as is when to go for it.

Our main strength is the ability to adapt; thus our card choices must reflect both permission and our own combo.

Combos and Synergies Show

We can note that any card draw/looting combo will win the game assuming at least game winning combo pieces are not exiled. Infinite card draw/looting can also lead to drawing any of the {0} mana rocks, and becomes infinite mana with infinite untaps. Infinite untaps also draws the deck with Sensei's Divining Top, and infinite Force Spike with Patron Wizard. Paradox Engine is extremely powerful, and several combos may not be listed; these are just samples of what it can do. In terms of winning the game, a common approach is forced decking using infinite mana and Blue Sun's Zenith. One can also create infinite birds using Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal + Copy Artifact + Swan Song. Provided the opponent has a creature out, replacing the Swan Song from the previous combo with Reality Shift will allow exile of an entire deck.

Considerations Show

The land count vs. mana rocks is 31:11, not counting Tolaria West, Extraplanar Lens, Sapphire Medallion, and Aphetto Alchemist. The optimal ratio or number of mana sources is around this region, but probably should go up slightly with respect to the land count.

Given Grim Monolith and Mana Vault the inclusion of Power Artifact may be warranted, but the only outlet for infinite colorless mana is Blue Sun's Zenith.

What cards should be main decked vs. what cards should be in the wishboard is also a point of contention.

It may be correct to focus on mana doubling/comboing and adopt a faster version with Candelabra of Tawnos, Time Spiral, Timetwister etc., but that would be for a more combo oriented build such as http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/prepare-your-salami-for-the-azami-1/.
