Sage of Epityr

Creature — Human Wizard

When Sage of Epityr enters the battlefield, look at the top four cards of your library, then put them back in any order.

The creature will be cast and its ETB trigger will happen first.

An ability like Omen Machine that casts a card directly (as opposed to abilities like Chainer, Nightmare Adept that say "you may cast

You cast the Sage of Epityr while the first Omen Machine trigger is resolving, and then after it finishes resolving the Sage will be the next thing to resolve. It will enter the battlefield and trigger, and you will resolve its trigger to rearrange the top four cards of your library, and then finally the second Omen Machine trigger will get a chance to resolve.

If I have 2 Omen Machine and cast a Sage of Epityr or Sylvan Ranger from the first Oman Machine, do I rearrange the top four cards or search for a land before the next Omen Machine trigger’s or do I finish all Omen Machine triggers before using the creature ETB triggers?

You could try taking out a Vedalken Engineer and a Drawn from Dreams since you have Sage of Epityr and you no longer have Darksteel Colossus which makes the ramping for artifacts a little overkill, especially since by the time you have your Karn out you will already have almost all the mana you need to cast Knowledge Pool. Actually you could possibly take out a Grand Architect, since he sometimes gets in the way and the aggro of it is somewhat deterrent if you are trying to lock the board down.

I do like the change you made with Flooded Strand as it makes it so Blood Moon can't effect you if you crack it while Blood Moon is on the stack to fetch a basic. It also give you that shuffle that you might need if you realize that Sage of Epityr did not give you what you wanted. Also just good for a shuffle if you are being mana screwed/flooded.

Sigarda's Aid is a neat descision, as it allows you to flash your lock enchantment out at the end of your opponents turn or at the beginning to stop them from doing anything if you have Knowledge Pool.

How about Faerie Seer for some high-quality/high-value topdeck manipulation/utility? I can easily see it replacing Omenspeaker; it's almost strictly better. Sage of Epityr might also be nice, as could See Beyond, and potentially even 1 or 2 copies of Feldon's Cane, though that one is a bit more of a risk. +1 For the deck, btw.

I'd bump up the Phantasms to a full playset, same with Counterspell.

Something to consider with Mystic Sanctuary is Deprive -- It's an effective combo for pauper, being able to have a counterspell in your hand each turn. With that in mind, you can then cut the Didn't Say Please and get the Chronic Flooding in -- Mills for the exact same amount and occurs more often. I love the curse tech, but running a full set of Flooding might work better, though you could always run both.

Tome Scour seems a good pick as a mill 5 for 1 blue mana, though you could also use Thought Scour for mill plus draw -- I'd be inclined to then cut the Mind Sculpts and get some card draw in -- Set of Opt or Accumulated Knowledge. You can have all the mill in the world, but it means nothing if you're topdecking to do it.

If you wanted to go all-in on Sanctuary, you could side a couple of Tragic Lesson just in case.

Are the automatons just a quick and easy one drop? You might get more from a set of Faerie Seer / Faerie Miscreant / Sage of Epityr or even something like a set of Screeching Sliver or Drowner Initiate

That Rotcrown Ghoul seems nice, but if you need a bit of muscle to back up your draw, check out Makeshift Mauler or Stitched Drake -- They don't mill your opponent, but you have enough of that already for a side-option. Sometimes you need a bit of bulk!

i think Sage of Epityr and Coiling Oracle can be some nice creatures to put in for better deck filtering to fin more relvant tools. Terastodon and Mold Shambler seem like they could be nice add in as well. Tamiyo, Field Researcher seems like a nice fit too.

This is interesting- as a first forray into modern it doesn't look like the worst I've seen.

I really reccomend taking a 'true' $30 budget deck or borrowing a deck to play FNM- there isn't much point building something if everyone is running a counter to that deck. Metagame matters.

Second, deckbuilding strategy. Modern decks have a 15 card sideboard- so you aren't picking 60 cards but rather 75 cards, chosen to meet whatever your metagame is.

Delver is a tempo deck- the strategy is pretty simple, put a clock on the board, protect it with counterspells/removal, then finish with lightning bolts to the face. This means that your spells are trying to trade 1-for-1 and stall your opponent, creatures are trying to benifit from that process and finish the game quick.

For budget, I'd consider sticking to two colours unless you already have fetches. Cutting blood crypt/watery grave/swamp will make your deck much, much more reliable, while the black cards have enough options in just U/R.

Seasoned Pyromancer and Bedlam Reveler are used because they refill your hand- giving a lot more reach and allowing it to fight out of topdeck mode. 'Draw two' or 'draw three' is really good. You will want to run reveler, as budget puts Snapcaster Mage out of the running, making the 'cheap' two for ones that power the deck less of a thing. Dreadhorde Arcanist offers an option to double up lightning bolts the way snappy does, if you are prepared to play at sorcery speed.

As for creatures, I'd either cut the number and focus exclusively on spell synergy ( Sage of Epityr / Thunderous Wrath , for example) or Adeliz, the Cinder Wind / Naru Meha, Master Wizard tribal synergies.

For budget, tribal or other synergy options get you the same 'power' as expensive cards in return for being a little more vulnerable to dusruption (something wizards can play around with counterspells).

Bloodwater Entity is extremely useful here. Its on legs so you can flicker it or copy it. Other topdeck manipulation creatures Omenspeaker Sage Owl Spire Owl Sage of Epityr Augury Owl

Cards that can abuse topdeck being known Psychic Battle Chaos Warp Spark of Creativity Erratic Explosion Prophetic Flamespeaker Abbot of Keral Keep Augur of Bolas Dark-Dweller Oracle Experimental Frenzy

Cards that let you see topdeck Lantern of Insight Goblin Spy Future Sight Magus of the Future

Cathartic Adept and similar mill effects can help you move past undesirable topdeck cards. Gives control when you can see enemy topdecks Pyxis of Pandemonium Ghoulcaller's Bell Drowner Initiate Hedron Crab Jace's Erasure Drowned Secrets Codex Shredder

If you're looking for hard and fast deck stacking, check out Brainstorm Ponder Preordain Serum Visions Index Mystic Speculation Opt Portent Spy Network Trickery Charm Ancestral Knowledge Contingency Plan Foreshadow Information Dealer Omen Predict Bamboozle Long-Term Plans Second Sight

If you're looking for combo potential, Memory Lapse is pretty filthy with putting your spell from hand to top of library, and it raises your storm QUITE A BIT. Hinder can do similar tricks.
