Hello! Welcome to my prototype decklist for Muldrotha, The Gravetide. Here she is in all her glory:

Muldrotha

Muldrotha, The Gravetide is perhaps the most exciting Commander yet for Sultai colors. I had an absolute blast spending the past year tuning this current list which uses our graveyard like a massive, endless second hand.

In terms of the mechanics and details about this card, let's work our way from the top down.

  1. Mana Cost(): We can see clearly here that the Gravetide has a pretty high mana cost for a commander. Get taken out once and we'll be spending a hefty 8 mana to get our machine back up and running. Thankfully, there's a couple colors here to help out with that. Blue will provide us with counterspells ( Swan Song , Arcane Denial , Pact of Negation , and - thanks to Muldrotha - the recurrable Glen Elendra Archmage ) while Green can provide us with mana ramp ( Cultivate , Kodama's Reach , Rampant Growth , Birds of Paradise ). This way, we have some sort of backup when it comes to playing our commander. We've also got Lightning Greaves and Sylvan Safekeeper to provide shroud with Command Beacon to back up to for an emergency. Meanwhile, Black will be providing us with most of the juicy strategies of the deck.

  2. Art: This really isn't a mechanic, but comon. This thing is beautiful (well done Jason Rainville).

  3. Creature Type, Elemental Avatar: We won't exactly be working with creature type, but there might be some people excited to use Muldrotha as Sultai colored Elemental tribal. I certainly did something similar with Surrak Dragonclaw .

  4. The Ability: Here's the best part. "During each of your turns, you may play up to one permanent card of each permanent type from your graveyard. (if a card has multiple permanent types, choose one as you play it.) This is awesome. This has effectively made our graveyard a very-close-to-literal second hand with our commander out. No instant and sorcery recursion, but that doesn't mean we can't bring back that Eternal Witness to replay Buried Alive or Jarad's Orders to give ourselves more creature fuel. Snapcaster Mage also comes in handy here for fetching back any instants and sorceries we might use. I attempted in balancing out recurrable enchantments, artifacts, and creatures (weight on creatures) to make sure that during our turns we should be able to play at least one of each. Recurring Lotus Petal , Sakura-Tribe Elder , and Seal of Primordium each turn will be just too much fun.

  1. Early Game: Early game is when we want to play our ramp. We want to charge into getting our commander out fast, so things like Sol Ring , Thran Dynamo , Rampant Growth , and Birds of Paradise will work wonders. This is also when we can play cards like Baleful Strix , Wayward Swordtooth , and Seal of Primordium that we will get to recur later on once Muldrotha is out on the field and these early turn permanents have hit the yard. In an opening hand we ideally want 3 lands, a piece of ramp, and some form of card draw.

  2. Mid Game: Here is when we start our self-mill. People who haven't played against Sultai before might be a little shocked when we smack down a Hermit Druid or target ourselves with Traumatize , but they'll be regretting it later when they didn't cast that counter. Those two cards and Undercity Informer will help put cards into our graveyard as well as Underrealm Lich , Frantic Search , Buried Alive , and Life from the Loam . We can start trying to get our endgame cards into the graveyard here, too. This is also a good time to be reacting to other people's plays. Perhaps boardwiping with Engineered Explosives which we can replay later.

  3. Late Game: This is when we'll be playing our wincon strategies discussed in the panel below, but there are a few noteworthy strategies to point out here. Spore Frog can provide us with a constant fog effect on one person's turn. Underrealm Lich and Elixir of Immortality can stop people from trying to fully mill us out and kill us on draw. Secrets of the Dead and Jace's Archivist will be very strong draw engines (notice the Archivist can also get rid of threats people have put into their hands via tutors). Vampire Hexmage can eliminate counters from that massive Elandra, Dusk Rose or pesky Jace, the Mind Sculptor. Plaguecrafter and Fleshbag Marauder make for great weights on our opponents while providing us with a sac outlet necessary for certain wincons. Most notably, Necromancy , Animate Dead , and Dance of the Dead are recurrable enchantments we can use to play our massive creatures very early on.

  1. Kokusho, the Evening Star + Animate Dead + sac outlet: This combo is simply beautiful. We can bring Kokusho back from the dead with Animate Dead, sac Kokusho to Undercity Informer , get some more cards in our graveyard, replay Kokusho as our creature per turn via Muldrotha, sac it again, get more cards, play Animate Dead as our enchantment per turn, and do it a 3rd time and get even more cards in the graveyard. Provided there are 3 opponents, we just drained them of 15 life each in one turn and gained 45 life on our side.

  2. Hermit Druid + World Shaper + Avenger of Zendikar : This one is too beautiful. We put half of our library into our graveyard (hopefully getting a ton of lands in there), play Avenger of Zendikar to make a bunch of plants, sac World Shaper, and slam all those lands onto the battlefield, making each plant MASSIVE. Swing for big damage.

  3. Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest + Blasting Station OR Viscera Seer + Woodfall Primus OR Glen Elendra Archmage : This infinite combo works by sacrificing our creatures with persist to either Blasting Station or Viscera Seer, depending on the necessary win. Stack Mazirek's trigger so that the creature returns with the -1/-1 counter before Mazirek places his +1/+1 counters, thereby allowing persist to activate again on the next sacrifice. Sacrifice these bois infinitely to blasting station to deal infinite damage to each opponent or sacrifice Woodfall Primus to viscera seer to get infinite scrying and destroy everyone else's noncreature permanents.

  4. Dark Depths : Swinging with a 20/20 flying indestructible is pretty brutal. Bring back Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord and sac Marit Lage to him to get around damage prevention and make each opponent lose 20 life all at once.

  5. Lord of Extinction : This creature is in line with the previous two wincons. By the time he's coming out, we'll have a pretty extensive graveyard if not everyone else. This thing hitting the field is pretty scary for everyone else and certainly puts us in a good place to start swinging for lethal damage. Even better than swinging, sacrifice him to Jarad just like Marit Lage.
