Vega, the Bird Watcher

Commander / EDH WU (Azorius)

Lurf

Creature (82)

Reading Vega for the first time is a classic example of why Magic is so amazing to me. Immediately the thought came to mind: "cool! that looks unusual, how can I make this work?". Ah ok... we got Foretell, playing from the top of the library, from (opponent's) graveyards and what else...?!

What I hope to achieve is a deck with what I love about Blue: lot's of card draw and playing many (cheap) spells. A humming card engine! But an engine isn't good/fun enough in and of itself. It needs to do more than 'spinning wheels'. So I turned to another classic part of the blue color identity: flying. The idea is to ramp up the engine and summon an ever growing flying armada!

Main themes

  • Draw/cantrip
  • Foretell
  • Flying creatures

Sub themes

  • Top of library manipulation
  • Control (counter/bounce/removal
  • Recursion (cipher/retrace)

FYI this deck is part of my tribute to Magic the Gathering; a collection of 6 commander decks that capture as many of what I consider to be the most fun mechanics of the game. Insofar as it fits I also try to incorporate some 'classic' themes and elements of color identity. Since I have 6 matching deck boxes - one for each color and one lotus - I've tried to make it to so that each deck fits (admittedly loosely) in one of these color categories.
