Can Gruul be really competetive?

I hope so .. It seems it never will be Tier 1, but I believe that it may take some games (and even tournaments) by surprise. I'm gonna find soon. :-)

Anyway it's the Man(bear)pig from (South Park) legends! So I'm gonna have a lot of fun I hope.

ManBearPig vs Capitalism

(From Litano (CEDH Raggadragga Discord server): I know this is already out there in the world, but just dropping the panglacial wurm combos in the channel for posterity:

  1. The winning combo starts with Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss and any mana dork that creates mana equal to its power on board (Marwyn, the Nurturer, Heronblade Elite, Viridian Joiner, or Selvala, Heart of the Wilds), and a creature tutor with x in its cost (Finale of Devastation, Green Sun's Zenith, or Chord of Calling) in the hand. (Note that you can do this all with other creature tutors, but it just costs more.)
  2. Cast your creature tutor for a total cost of 7 or more, then use Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss's trigger to untap your power-based dork before resolving the tutor. As you search your library, tap the dork again to play Panglacial Wurm.
  3. Returning to your tutor, put Temur Sabertooth onto the battlefield. At this point, Panglacial Wurm and any abilities that it triggers go onto the stack. Untap your mana dork with Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss AGAIN, now giving it +14/+14. This is easily enough mana to bounce Panglacial Wurm with Temur Sabertooth's ability and replay it, giving you infinite mana and infinite etbs. You'll eventually make enough mana that you no longer have to target your dork with Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss's ability, so you can continue to bounce and replay the Panglacial Wurm to give all your creatures trample, infinite power, and infinite toughness.
  4. From here, you can win in a variety of ways. You can swing for lethal if there's one creature capable of attacking this turn for each opponent, pump all your mana into some sort of infinite outlet like Duskwatch Recruiter  , or arbitrarily cast any creature on your board an infinite number of times (this won't be possible for a creature w/ red in its cost unless you have Selvala, Heart of the Wilds or Heronblade Elite).
  1. Anything that lets you search your library will let you cast Panglacial Wurm, so you can use a fetchland as an opportunity to get a free Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss's trigger and thus improve x spells in your hand such as Genesis Wave, Commune with Lava, etc.
  2. Selvala, Heart of the Wilds plays a unique role in this whole combo. On one hand, you'll need 8 mana total to win off of her and a tutor in the hand instead of 7, because you can untap her to the Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss's trigger on your tutor and be left without any more mana to activate her a second time. After that point, however, Selvala will always tap for more than you need, so you'll always be able to use your leftover mana from last activation to pay for the loop. As an added bonus, once the loop is in motion Selvala can win off of it even if you can't swing in for lethal: make infinite mana, bounce Selvala, Heart of the Wilds and Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss to hand with Temur Sabertooth, then replay Selvala, Heart of the Wilds and cast Panglacial Wurm an arbitrary amount of times, drawing a card each time to Selvala, Heart of the Wilds's ability so long as it's the most powerful creature. You need to bounce Selvala, Heart of the Wilds in this line to reset her toughness and bounce Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss so that you're not pumping something bigger than the Panglacial Wurm on each cast, but this version of the combo lets you win on the spot regardless of attackers for the cost of one extra mana.
  3. Survival of the Fittest is great, because you do all this off its search for infinite mana and then bounce wurm to hand at the end of the line and get Regal Force or Terror of the Peaks to finish off the table.
  4. With infinite mana you may use Temur Sabertooth to return and cast Eternal Witness again and again, do the same with Lightning Bolt and cast the Bolt gazillion times to kill everything and everybody.

(reaver570 on REDDIT: "So I run E-Wit + bolt in case I need try and combo-off post-combat. If you have Heronblade + Raggadragga out you can chord for Ewit, make the Chord extra large for the Raggadragga trigger, return chord to your hand with Ewit, chord for Temur Sabretooth, chord as many times as you please, do something to draw your deck then recur bolt to win. You can even do this at instant speed if you have emergence zone or something!"
  • Inkmoth Nexus - Able to kill a player with one Raggadragga trigger (1/1 with +2/+2 and +7/+7 = 10 infect).
