I wanted to build a 5-color commander deck because I started playing MtG ~25 years ago (:o) with a WUBRG preconstructed deck. It was a “five colour Green” deck from the Invasion set featuring the Domain mechanic! So yeah.. deciced to take a trip down memory lane, sorta. Plus I had bought this super cool Lotus deck box. So I had to..!

The inspiration for this one started with a 60 card 5-color enchantment deck I'd made sometime back. The idea was to put together the most whacky global enchantments in all of MtG for pure multiplayer fun. In the beginning the deck didn't even have actual win conditions :)

So... I decided to do some thorough research and scroll through all 3.575 enchantments in the game. When I came across Paradox Haze I knew I had something proper gimmicky. Double upkeep abuse! Imagine beating someone with that! ^_^

The obvious next steps were to look for enchantments that do something "at the beginning of your upkeep". Honden came to mind (always wanted to try those) and I found fun cards like Debtor's Knell. The risk of such a deck, however, is that gameplay becomes quite static. Enchantments just sit there... Luckily I found out there are quite a few enchantment creatures these days. Plus, we can animate our enchantment with Opalescence and Starfield of Nyx! The latter also fits nice with our double upkeep theme. Marina is not super important as commander in this deck (most Room's kinda suck unfortunately) but offers a decent fit with a strong draw option mid-game.

Tried to make it gimmicky but also as powerful as I could given all the resources I'm spending on convoluted upkeep trickery. After all, the meta I'm in includes so pretty strong players and losing all the time ain't no fun.

Speaking of fun, I sometimes sneakily run Toy Boat and Ambiguity (does this actually do something..?! :D) just for laughs and giggles.

Main themes:

  • Enchantment synergy payoffs
  • Double upkeep abuse
  • Enchantment animation

Sub themes:

  • Graveyard recursion
  • Shrines
  • Copying

FYI this deck is part of my tribute to Magic the Gathering; a collection of 6 commander decks that capture as many of what I consider to be the most fun mechanics of the game. Insofar as it fits I also try to incorporate some 'classic' themes and elements of color identity. Since I have - one for each color and one lotus - I've tried to make it to so that each deck fits (admittedly loosely) in one of these color categories.
