Tatsunari, Toad Rider

Legendary Creature — Human Ninja

Whenever you cast an enchantment spell, if you don't control a creature named Keimi, create Keimi, a legendary 3/3 black and green Frog creature token with "Whenever you cast an enchantment spell, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life."

: This and target Frog you control can't be blocked this turn except by creatures with flying or reach.

That seems weird if only because Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar technically doesn't have a 'cost' cost and only an ability that costs or and yet she ends up in the gold color identity column and not over with poor accidentally uncolored Greasefang and the Hope of Ghirapur. I guess she has the little pip next to her types. I mean I can see that you might not be using these cards in a format that doesn't rely on color identity, but they still have it and a lot of people use it for deck construction.

I guess if I were to make a suggestion for functional options maybe adding a color identity button would be good.

Oh and couldn't find Jorn, God of Winter  Flip or Svella, Ice Shaper just looking for 3 mana legendary green creatures, unless I add in 'legendary snow creatures' which makes it feel like I'm expected to know snow creatures before actually looking for them.

Anyhow you caught me in the middle of typing up the following when I noticed the quick reply:

I have a slightly more complete list of cards that don't seem to have the appropriate color identity at least as far as searching them out and organizing them on my side goes. I was looking for a list of all the possible Tiny Leaders a person could use (so legendary 3 mana value or less creature cards that could serve as a commander in a game that uses commanders) and these are the cards I could not find if I searched by color identity or if once I found them they didn't fit their color identity (in all cases they show up under a single color category instead of 'gold'). There are probably several other cards that have this issue that exist outside my search parameters.

Thanks for being so quick!

I actually have another card I could add to that list: Tatsunari, Toad Rider.

If I do a search for 3 mana Sulti colored legendary creature cards I get back Leovold, Emissary of Trest and that's it. Likewise if I organize Tatsunari (or Alesha, or Yasova, or Shu Yun) they show up under a single color (the one in their 'cost', rather than their actual 'color identity') and not 'gold' as I image they technically should.

freezerboy, Sadistic Sacrament would be bad, hopefully have a counterspell onboard if that gets cast! I think Cruel Tutor would be good here too, to set the top deck.

Jack_Dashing, thanks for the post on the other deck I commented, appreciated. Valid point, I'm going to move Viscera Seer to the Ninja's category. Really he just sacrifices Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow to get Commander Ninjitsu back in play, and hopefully scry a nice card to the top of the library, so he's really like a Ninja since he just re-enables the Ninjitsu. He can be an early T1 play that also can connect if an opponent has no blockers to commander ninjitsu and return him to hand, then recast, and sac the Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow, but doesn't have any evasion to speak of.

I'm trying to figure out how to get, Cruel Tutor (maybe remove Grim Tutor or Doomsday/Plunge into Darkness) and a backup plan to Thassa's Oracle, maybe Laboratory Maniac in? Since Doomsday just relies on Thassa's Oracle anyway, it's not really a backup.

A Doomsday + Plunge into Darkness or a Doomsday + Street Wraith or a Doomsday + Thassa's Oracle all rely on Thassa's Oracle anyway. Doomsday just let's me tutor the setup with a lot more cards (cantrips in hand, thassa's in hand, plunge in hand), so unsure really if it's the right card. Could just tutor up the thassa's/consul instead, but thats 2 tutors vs. 1.

Also, wonder if anyone just has a deck thats 30 lands, 25 tutors (Tatsunari, Toad Rider, CMC1/2 green tutors for Thassa's Oracle, CMC 1/2/3 blue tutors for Tainted Pact, CMC 1/2/3 black tutors for anything (counters/combo pieces). It wouldn't be very resilient without any draw, maybe have a couple strong draws you can tutor.

I like the ninja flavor though, seems like a bit of work to get going, but it's quick, low on the curve, draw built into the commander. Certainly competitive speed.

Also feel Mothdust Changeling is going to give me value as well. Not sure what changes I need in here. If I abandon Doomsday is there another alt. win (Show and Tell + Omniscience + Enter the Infinite maybe? They all punch people in the face with Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow, or is hitting with the high cmc extra turns spells good enough?

I watched a Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow on a youtube, it just pulled cards like Draco and such to top of library, but those cards never get cast, feel every card should at least have play value vs. just being a damage source, but have no play experience with this, hoping build 1 not to invest in a bunch of cards that will get cut as I learn to play it, but feel its a good start as is, a few more tweaks?

freezerboy,

Valid point. I don't see much in terms of ninjas that can win games, other than Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow.

The ninjas do provide the card advantage (draw), in the command zone that is needed. Tatsunari, Toad Rider could take advantage of ninjas but doesn't draw himself.

If Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow is in the command zone defintely want to commander ninjutsu over other ninjas always as well.

Hmm. The best we can hope for is to tutor a couple ninjas, and then Scroll Rack some cards to the top to deal damage to each opponent with multiple draw triggers on the stack. Fallen Shinobi feels almost unplayable at CMC4, but the ability is strong.

Just not seeing any ninja with a win con to utilize, they have to trigger Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow and provide additional card advantage on their own. Should be able to tutor the best ninjas or some big spells, or a combo. If anything happens to Thassa's Oracle in this build, the tutor ninjas strategies becomes critical to being able to win.

Ninjas are fun? I guess is the best answer, Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow is really strong and avoids commander tax. There are commanders with draw built in, that have the win con on them Thrasios, Triton Hero for example, so is flavor > optimized play? Choosing ninjas for sure is flavor over optimized play. It's quite a bit of setup to have creatures that can attack without being blocked, then investing in ninjitsu to draw cards (shutting off Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow shuts off the draw), to try and draw cards to win the game (sometimes just draw more unblockable creatures instead!).

Any thoughts on how to win with ninjas (in the 99)?

azja,

Couple early questions if you don't mind. Let me know if I'm a bother :) My Yuri Deck

Karn's Temporal Sundering hitting an opponent for 6 is good, but wouldn't Capture of Jingzhou be more efficient for CMC1 less? Perhaps its a budgetary/availability consideration?

You have 15 enablers, I read the notes on them, couple questions. What's the critical mass on this, like would 10 be deterimental. When I did a rough pull in had the following questions:

Why is Tormented Soul excluded, is it just as simple as the Force of Will? He still not better than the 2CMC options like Augury Owl?

Kaito Shizuki thoughts? I'm worried that the CMC3 for the -2 is the wrong tempo/timing, but, he does come in, make a unblockable, then phase out to also get the draw next turn. If you don't need the unblockable, it's draw 2 for CMC3, tough to see hitting his ultimate at 7. 3CMC planeswalker are usually good, some I'm tempted to think this one will be too? But I have no play experience on this deck.

I just can't get my head around the flying evasion guys though, Faerie Seer, Spectral Sailor, Wingcrafter, Augury Owl, Sage Owl. They feel "sub-optimal" to me and difficult to include, but as I said what's the critical mass here? I was considering Baleful Strix in the 2CMC drop, just because he replaces himself in hand (which may just be discarded anyway, but looting never that bad anyway), with deathtouch less likely to be blocked by flying/reach, and he can be an effective (deathtouch) defender.

I've roughed in "12" for the timebeing.

Honestly my first thought was this is a turbo-draw to tutor, fish-pact/fish-consul strategy. I was looking at Tatsunari, Toad Rider instead, but I think I like "big splashy spells" more than the aristocrats method. So that got me thinking, what the heck do I win with, is this viable or am I off-base here:

Primary: Thassa's Oracle + Demonic Consultation or Tainted Pact ASAP / Draw for tutors

Tertiary Maverick 'Turn and Burn': Temporal Trespass, Temporal Mastery, Temporal Manipulation, Capture of Jingzhou with perhaps something like Sea Gate Restoration  Flip or Dig Through Time as possible damage enablers in addition to the 'turn'.

I skipped Secondary intentionally, is there no room here for a Doomsday? I can think of multiple stacks with varied CMC, E.G. if devotion to blue 3 + Doomsday + Thassa's Oracle (BBBUU) is a win, if you don't have Thassa's Oracle, somethig like Doomsday + Gitaxian Probe/Street Wraith into a Night's Whisper or something could be around CMC7, Gush kinda useless here for a CMC3 (BBB) stack.

Thoughts on that? I see you intentionally don't run the fish, but this seems viable for this deck?

For Scheming Symmetry doesn't the player just pull a counterspell to stop your win, does it really "win on the spot", if you have to pass it feels useless, but with Nashi, Moon Sage's Scion or Opposition Agent it does work. Reliability? I "should"? run it?

Has Mutavault been enough value for a possible swing vs. the downside of the colorless mana? It dodges board wipe and is a ninja, so kinda-of makes sense to me, but I'm on the fence?

Also, would avoiding the enters tapped lands be better? E.G. Drowned Catacomb, Mystic Sanctuary, Sunken Hollow be far better as say City of Brass, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, River of Tears, Etc.?

I do have TOO MANY potential colorless mana Ancient Tomb, Gemstone Caverns, Reliquary Tower, Strip Mine. I feel like Reliquary Tower is a trap and I should remove, where I feel like, what's my strategy vs. a Glacial Chasm or Maze of Ith.

It's still a work in progress, I think I need more Ninjas then I have, still evaluating them one by one, and trying to figure out what each tutor gets me, but first I need to know what my win-con plans are to know what i'm looking for!

Thanks for any feedback you can provide.

Tatsunari and the Unblockables is a voltron aura style deck wincon is to get as many aura as possible on Tatsunari, Toad Rider to win with commander damage.

I would like your advice to look at my deck and see if there are any ways I can bump up the power level to a high level causal. I want to keep the cmc down so I can have it play the deck much faster.

The area I feel like might need attention is my aura choices. I want to bump up Tatsunari or any other attacker I have to High enough attack where I can close out the game in a fee turns. Any other suggestions would be nice. My deck list is provide below.

If I have Myojin of Cryptic Dreams in play with the indestructibility counter still on it and Tatsunari, Toad Rider in play, then cast an enchantment to create Keimi; and then cast a second enchantment and remove the indestructibility counter from Myojin, with Keimi trigger 4 times or only once as the other 3 are copies as opposed to casting?

February 1, 2022- Continuing thoughts on Neon Dynasty spoilers

Several more spoilers are posted, so I'll comment on all of the ninjas.

First of all, the not-so-great

1) Futurist Operative On the surface this might seem promising in that it is a ninja that can become a 1/1 unblockable creature (hence a ninja enabler) when tapped. Unfortunately it loses its ninja status when it attacks (hence it will never give us Yuriko triggers), lacks ninjutsu, and costs four mana to get on the board. I'd way rather keep Whirler Rogue which gives me so much more, or just play another evasive one drop. Pass on this one.

2) Tatsunari, Toad Rider The upside of this is that if you can cast it for three, then cast an enchantment, then use its two mana activated ability, you can get two unblockable ninja enablers, only one of which can get Yuriko triggers. That's a lot of hoops to jump through. Also, it cares about enchantments and aristocrats stuff, which is totally off theme for Yuriko. I love the flavor of a toad riding ninja, but I don't think this will make it.

3) Dokuchi Shadow-Walker A vanilla 5/5 ninja isn't impactful enough for commander. Enough said.

Secondly, the Promising

1) Biting-Palm Ninja The best thing about this ninja is that we can get it out for three and it has menace, giving us some evasion to either get us a Yuriko trigger or enable a more powerful ninja. The fact that we can remove a counter to get an upgraded Thoughtseize at instant speed, perhaps after a tutor is played, is a nice plus. What is even better is using menace to give it evasion, removing the counter after blockers are declared, then returning it to our hand to activate ninjutsu for another ninja, then re-deploying it with the counter. I can't guarantee this makes it, but there is a lot of potential.

2) Silver-Fur Master An inexpensive ninja Lord who also discounts our ninjutsu costs in quite good. The only downside is that he shuts of Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive, but that is a very particular case. The decision here is whether this downside is a major drawback, as well as if it lowers our curve so much that we don't do enough damage with our Yuriko triggers. I'll definitely try it out though.

Thirdly, the Good

1) Covert Technician This is a lot better than it might seem on the surface. One of the early tensions in Yuriko is between getting out ninjas and getting our draw engine going on turn two or three versus not doing that to ramp in order to get resources for the long term. The fact that this can come out swinging on turn two while also dropping our mana rocks or scroll rack for free is a really strong early game piece. Even late game its cheap ninjutsu cost will help us to put out multiple ninjas in one turn to help us close things out. This is one of the stronger possibilities out there.
