Maybeboard

Big creature fun. Me play big creature.

The real key to a Mayael deck is to understand that your opponents will never let you tap Mayael. There's a few ways we deal with that. Cards like Selvala's Stampede can get our big pals out without Mayael and cards like Genesis Storm actually benefit us the more times she's been removed or countered.

Real key number two is ramp. You'd think with a 3 cost commander we'd be playing a lot of 1 cost ramp like dorks, but actually Mayael is best cast at 5 mana. This means that she can threaten the board with her tap next turn and your opponents will waste counter spells or removal on her. She can always come back later when you have way more mana and a haste enabler. The actual amount of mana we are aiming to ramp into is 6 or 7. So playing higher cost ramp spells all the way up to 4(and maybe 5) cost is much better. Being at 6 or 7 mana also means we can cast many of the bigguns in the deck if we happened to draw them. This is beneficial because we'd rather our opponents counter and remove the pieces we have in hand then the cards we use to dig for more.

Another reason I'm not running dorks (and most other permanents) is that wipes are your friend. Wipes are what keep you alive and keep your opponents from running away with the game while you ramp. Even when you have enough mana to cast one of our replacement Mayael spells it can be beneficial to wipe instead. Avacyn, Angel of Hope is amazing but she has no hope of saving you against 500 scute swarms or a nearly online combo deck. Wipe first, then get Avacyn out there.

This brings me to the third key... Anyone running discard must be killed first. We don't have many reliable ways of drawing cards outside of Harmonize. Classic green stompies card draw options only work if we have a big boi out already. If that's the case, draw really isn't a super high priority.

Next, kill the control player. If you end up in a 1v1 against the control player your chances of success are very slim. All of your power is centralized in a few cards with high mana value, exactly what a control player wants to trade their removal/counters for the most.

The final key is to relax a little. Mayael isn't a super competitive commander and your turns are going to be short and often uneventful until the late game. Just chill and have fun <3
