Kaza, Roil Chaser! Draw, Turn, and Burn!

Riverglide Pathway

Kaza, Roil Chaser : Since before Zendikar Rising I’ve really been looking for an Izzet commander that gave me what I wanted. Casually competitive, kind of spell slinger but not a super combo deck. But still have the fun the Izzet provides. And after Kaza, Roil Chaser was spoiled I felt like she was exactly what I was looking for! Kaza is a card I feel is pretty underrated. I personally love low cost commanders and for just 2 she does a lot. Flying and Haste actually get in for more damage than you think. Even if it is only 1 each time. But her tap ability is what we really love. This ability lets us cast BIG spells for not a lot of mana on our end. We will copy or untap Kaza to use this multiple times for even bigger and better cards!

Wizard: Wizards are the name of the game here. I have 23-25 in the deck at all times to make sure we have enough to consistently draw them. We don't always need a ton of them out. But we do need just enough to be effective and not take up half the deck. So the amount of Wizards in the deck is a delicate balance.

Showcase : Showcase is where I choose a couple different cards I like from each section and discuss why I like them so much.

  • Aphetto Alchemist, a low cost wizard that untaps Kaza. It is fast, simple, and good. It doesn't have a mana activation cost. Just untaps Kaza and counts as a wizard. Cannot ask for anything more simple than that.

  • Realmwright, it really helps with color fixing. A lot of what stops this deck is the fact that sometimes you just don't have enough colored mana and the right color. Realmwright really helps fix this and only for a low one and it counts as a wizard.

  • Spark Double, there are a couple copy creature effects in this deck but Spark Double takes the cake. Being able to copy a legendary creature, of which there are several awesome ones in this deck, is so powerful in this list. Whether you copy Kaza, Roil Chaser (which is always a perfect option) or Arcanis the Omnipotent there are so many awesome targets for this card. It will always have a perfect spot in this deck.

Draw : Much like Burn, it is a small category, but a mighty one. These cards are good with just a few wizards on board, a lot of wizards on board, or even no wizards on board. Sometimes you're in games where you're just not drawing a lot of gas and you do a simple draw spell for X = 4. That can even instantly change the game for you.

I've been thinking lately of adding more cards in that give you no max handsize to capatilize on these cards. So I've ordered a Sea Gate Restoration   because I love the module cards. But I'm also thinking of adding Graceful Adept again.

Showcase :

  • Finale of Revelation, this card is near single handedly one of my favorite cards to play in this deck. When you can hit that 10+ requirement (which is often much more than 10) it's almost always an indicator of the end. You shuffle your graveyard into your library, draw 10+ card, and untap 5 lands. Usually I can just play an extra turn spell that I drew or had after that from the 5 untapped lands and just kind win the game from there.

  • Arcanis the Omnipotent, I really like this card because not only is it card draw stuck onto a wizard, but, you can also untap it just as easily as you can Kaza, Roil Chaser. Which in a pinch and you're low on gas, Arcanis the Omnipotent can really help save the game.

Extra Turn : Taking an extra turn for 2 mana is a greeeeat feeling. Then when you copy or recur them, even better! Many times this deck win by casting a couple extra turn spells and smacking your opponents with big creatures.

Showcase :

  • Time Stretch, two extra turns for two mana is a very real thing that you can do. So this card can be a lot of fun! But my favorite experience so far with this card is casting a Finale of Promise for 10+ and taking 6 extra turns because of it.

Burn: The cards in this category do one simple thing. Burn. Burn through health, toughness, and tears. All 4 (currently) are burn spells with X in them but I am planning on changing a couple cards in here. So Banefire and Shatterskull Smashing   are soon to be added once I have the actual physical cards. Regardless, these cards can be very useful in just general creature removal OR player removal. The second of the two being my favorite. The feeling of power obtained from tapping Kaza, Roil Chaser multiple times and dumping massive amounts of mana into a big Jaya's Immolating Inferno is unmatched.

Showcase :

Token : The token section is very often the main win con for this deck. We get to cast some awesome spells for cheap and these cards are centered around producing tokens off of casting instants or sorceries.

Showecase :

  • Shark Typhoon/Metalurgic Summonings, These two cards are awesome in this deck. When we're casting huge X spells you can make some absolutely insane tokens off of these. Shark Typhoon is slightly better because it makes flyers and also its fucking Sharknado. But usually I start making some big ass tokens, take a couple extra turns, and smack my opponents to death.

  • Docent of Perfection  , he is one of the few creatures that are not a wizard but he does make them! The fact that he produces wizards each instant or sorcery helps a ton. Then, he flips and becomes a lord for our wizard friends which helps even more. Overall just a perfect fit in this deck.

Land : This mana base is made of 3 parts. Basic lands, every land that produces and , and module cards that can flip into lands.

Cards I don't have : There are certainly cards I don't have in this section. Volcanic Island is simply far to much for me. I just don't want to pay $500 for it. I might just order a cool proxy and take it out if I do a paid event. I don't have Scalding Tarn because it is to much at the moment as well. This one I actually plan on buying one day but I've spent enough just to get where I am so far. I'm sure there are others but you can probably assume it is to much at the moment or I just don't want them.

Showcase : - Minamo, School at Water's Edge, this is a card that untaps Kaza, Roil Chaser and isn't a tap land. It is just an automatic add to this deck!

  • Cavern of Souls, this card is in the deck because I pulled it out of a collectors pack recently (I also pulled the Flooded Strand. Very expensive and may get sold to get some other stuff. But still works well in this deck

  • Glasspool Mimic  , I really like the module cards for they can help a lot when I need the land or they do some really good stuff. I have ordered a Shatterskull Smashing   and Sea Gate Restoration   to be added to this section.

Ramp : This section is pretty simple but important. As I have said many times before the need for colored mana is a constant factor with this deck. So the only non colored mana producer is the one and only Sol Ring.

Showcase :

  • Arcane Signet, this is card is simply the best low cost mana rock. I don't want any of the expensive mana rocks that produce colorless mana. So Arcane Signet is going to be the best mana rock in the category I want.

  • Wayfarer's Bauble, I really like cards that give us the option between red or blue mana. This can really help in a pinch.

Untapper : Now this is one of my favorite sections! There is so much utility here, you can not only untap Kaza, Roil Chaser, but any other amazing abilities on some of these wizards. The use of untappers is what allows us to cast some of our gigantic X spells.

Showcase :

  • Fatestitcher, this card is good because it can untap or tap any pernament. So if you need an extra mana it can help, or if you need to tap down a huge attacker before it has a chance to smack your face. He's your guy. Most of the other untappers have restrictions on what they can untap, but his one doesn't which puts it in a league above the others.

  • Ral Zarek, now this card is a nostalgic one for me. This was the first rare I ever pulled and I always wanted to put it in a deck. Little did I know it would not only make my Kaza, Roil Chaser deck but it is a really good card in it to! Ral Zarek let's you untap anything (Much like Fatestitcher), and let's you tap down something of an opponents. You can also bolt something, and get lots of extra turns out of him. I usually play him and then play one or two extra turn spells. Then you can basically free cast his ult into even more turns. Honestly, everything about him just works perfectly in this deck :)

Counter : It's just not Izzet without some counters. I see them as a substitute for not having spot removal (because I have an Orzhov deck which has plenty of that :) ), I don't have any of the free counters right now because they're quite expensive but I plan on them one day

Showcase :

  • Sublime Epiphany, I have always wanted to play this card since it was spoiled but it has always just to high CMC for what it gives you. But with Kaza, Roil Chaser you suddenly have an improved Counterspell

  • Mindswipe, I've enjoyed getting a sneaky win in on people. When someone is in a lower health range you just pass with everything up and the next time they play a spell. You strike for the kill.

Utility : These cards were originally in a bunch of different sub categories but I figured it would better to lump them into one. So in here you'll find quite the variety of different cards. From copying effects to tutors!

Showcase :

  • Blatant Thievery, absolutely one of my favorite cards in the deck! 3 mana to steal anything you'd like! I recently played a match against a pretty highly tuned combo The Gitrog Monster deck. The look on my friends face when I stole his commander, PRICELESS!

  • Vedalken AEthermage, before I made this deck I had never heard of such a strange card. But hey, it works perfectly in this deck! Still waiting for the day I actually cast this to bounce a sliver :)
