Maybeboard

January 2020 UPDATE Courser of Kruphix has been removed for the new Dryad of the Ilysian Grove

NOVEMBER 2019 UPDATE After realizing i had 22 creatures 2 planeswalkers and Dark Depths to count as the 25 knights of the round table, I have removed Vraska's Contempt and added Sword of Feast and Famine to represent Excalibur. I did consider Blackblade Reforged but I just like F&F better.

OCTOBER 2019 UPDATE: Kenrith, the Returned King is the new commander, replacing Jodah, Archmage Eternal Along with this change Zacama, Primal Calamity has been removed and Seedborn Muse added

ABOUT THE DECK I built this to be a synergy/combo based lands deck featuring no infinite combos. The number of tutors was also limited to help cut down on the amount of shuffling and to allow for more varied game play. I love this deck because it features a "fair" combo strategy, is always interesting to pilot, and rarely wins the same way.

This deck originally started out with The Gitrog Monster at the helm but was turned into Saskia the Unyielding when I decided to take out the infinite combos. I made the switch to 5 color when Jodah, Archmage Eternal came out. The maybe board is primarily cards that used to be in the deck or ones that could be swapped in to focus more on certain strategies.

The dual lands in the deck are the ones I own, obviously they are better than shock lands, but the deck works fine with only shocks.

Strengths:

  • varied game play, can win through direct damage combos or combat

  • lots of interaction

  • graveyard recursion

  • ability to take out someone in one shot

Weaknesses:

  • vulnerable to graveyard hate

  • lots of shuffling

  • hard to take out multiple people at once

  • can be hard to deal with life gain decks

One card of note that I have been criticized for is Cataclysm as people do get salty about sacrificing all but one of their lands. If you decide you would rather leave everyone's lands alone run Tragic Arrogance or Cataclysmic Gearhulk. I like having these sacrifice based board wipe that can deal with more strategies because they hit everything, not just creatures like Wrath of God and leaving people with something on the board gives some hope and helps keep the game interesting. Honestly though you can't please everyone and Cataclysm just has more synergy in the deck with cards like The Gitrog MonsterCrucible of WorldsWorld ShaperCavalier of FlameSplendid ReclamationSquandered Resources and I like having the tactical nuke option.

Some possible combos:

Dark Depths + Thespian's Stage Dark Depths + Mirage Mirror Prismatic Omen + Scapeshift + Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle Ob Nixilis, the Fallen + Splendid Reclamation Borborygmos Enraged + Creeping Renaissance Field of the Dead + Scapeshift Field of the Dead + World Shaper Ob Nixilis, the Fallen + World Shaper Cavalier of Flame + Field of the Dead + Splendid Reclamation Cavalier of Flame + Zuran Orb Cavalier of Flame + Squandered Resources Cavalier of Flame + Sylvan Safekeeper Omnath, Locus of Rage + Scapeshift
