Decent Isochron Scepter Cards

Nekoyuki

Isochron Scepter has been a card I've had a love-hate relationship with. I primarily play Commander when I play on paper (I reserve my Legacy/Modern/Standard games for online-play,) and I love the idea of Isochron Scepter. Getting to cast and re-cast some of my favourite spells in a singleton format is something I really enjoy. On the other hand, in a singleton format, it's hard to justify a space in a deck for a card that might have only so many compatible cards for it to work with. Hrm...

To that end, there are a litany of spells that'd be GREAT to throw under this thing. Furthermore, I will throw in the following rules:

1. : Any spell that requires an additional cost, such as sacrificing a permanent or returning a permanent you control to the hand, is out. Yes, there are great cards with added costs with great effects that could be used with great synergy with the deck you may be thinking of. However, this list assumes (for the most part) that these cards are to be used alone, and are not synergized with anything else. Think of it this way; if you have no hand or graveyard to work from, only lands and the Isochron Scepter in play, how are you going to cast that Altar's Reap from underneath it? (No, you don't have any man-lands or token-producing lands, smartass.)

2. : If the spell doesn't straight-up read: "Destroy/Exile Target Creature.", then it's out. Again, yes, there are a litany of cards you could choose from, most of which are quite good. However, I don't like the idea of specifics getting in the way of my removal spell. Honestly, "Destroy Target Creature. It can't be regenerated." is much better than "Destroy target Nonblack, Nonartifact Creature. It can't be regenerated."

3. : Like above, if the spell doesn't read: "Counter target spell.", then it's out... unless it comes with a sweet after-effect, or chooses at least two types of spells. I don't like limiting myself to Counter Spells that can target only specific spells. If it just draws a card in addition, it better counter more than just one type of spell.

That's pretty much it.

:
If you didn't know, there's a neat trick you can do with this card!

: Since you're copying the card and casting it, you can pay any additional costs you want for the card! Kicker/Multikicker, Buyback (even though it's completely useless, as you can't return a copy of a spell to your hand), and Entwine costs may be paid to gain their benefits. However, while I'm on the subject, ALTERNATE costs cannot be paid, and can't be used for this purpose. To that end, you can't Overload a spell under Isochron Scepter.

I'm sure there was something else, but that was the most relevant one. The list is sorted by colour, rather than by what it does (like the custom categories created for the Sunforger list. The sheer number of cards I have to go through, combined with the sheer number of cards I'd then have to itemize just simply makes it not worth my time right now. I'm sure you can read and figure it out for yourself. Everything in this list is chosen based on my opinion, and from there, makes the list. There might even be a couple oddball spells that made the list just because I personally liked them. If you'd like to offer your two cents, please comment below!

SO! If you have read this description in the past, I explained how you could abuse Split/Fuse/etc... cards with Isochron Scepter's Imprint ability. However, it was announced today that as of Amonkhet's release date there will be a change to the rules concerning how Split/Fuse/etc... cards' CMC's will be seen. At that point, the Converted Mana Cost of all these cards will be the combined total of the printed numbers. For example, the CMC of Who/What/When/Where/Why will be 13. Therefore, a lot (if not all) of the Split/Fuse/etc... cards will not be compatible with Sunforger/Isochron Scepter.

List updated as of Aether Revolt.
