Phenax has a disease. And the only cure is... more cow bells. No, it's high toughness. High toughness serves two purposes :

1) defend from attacks 2) win the game through milling

Sewer Nemesis, Consuming Aberration, Mortivore: such amazing cards that get exponentially tougher and win you the game in no time. But walls are also amazing for this purpose. The deck does require as much ramp as possible or risks falling too far behind. Myrs and Ornithopter of Paradise are used, because they can double as a minor source milling if they're not used for ramping.

Undead Alchemist should also be singled-out as a true champion of this deck.
