Sideboard

So Atraxa was the first of the 2016 Commander decks I purchased, knowing how many things she could potentially be used for with Proliferate. Since her release, she rose to the most Popular Commander, and has become known as a fearful General piloting numerous archetypes such as +1/+1 counters, -1/-1 counters, Superfriends, Stax, Infect, among other wild brews.

My version of Atraxa doesn't really focus on any particular counter type. Using only cards in the modern frame (M15 and newer) to keep some diversity in the card choices, I build Atraxa to primarily just focus on Proliferating mostly +1/+1 counters and the occasional other counter.

Obviously there are tons and tons of Atraxa decklists out there, and most of them contain the same cards again and again. My deck definitely contains the good stuff, lots of creatures with counter synergy, and a few walkers, but I felt the need to talk about some pretty neat cards that I don't see a lot of people using in their decks. I'll start with my favorite:

Plaxcaster Frogling - So this card has been an all-star in my Atraxa deck, and I have no idea why it doesn't show up in almost every Creature-Heavy Atraxa Deck. For three mana, you get a 3/3 dude who can move those counters onto other creatures. But his real power comes from his ability to give a creature with a +1/+1 counter on it Shroud for a measly two mana! Sure, it's not the most efficient protection, but considering you can easily give all of your creatures +1/+1 counters, then use the Frogling to Protect them from Spot Removal at instant speed is superb.

Fertilid - So I imagine a lot of Atraxa decks out there have very few basic lands in their mana bases. Being a fairly budget player, I end up having a good number of basic lands in my decks. This card is outrageous in any counter manipulating deck with basic lands. Instant speed Rampant Growth on a stick that you can keep abusing? Am I missing something?

Selvala's Stampede - This is one of those cards that manages to find its way into any of my Green Commander decks running Green. Why? Because its Stupid. I do play multiplayer often, so it's obviously better with multiple opponents. Since my deck runs a large number of creatures and other permanents, this card usually gets me some nice engine pieces or fatties.

Kiora, the Crashing Wave - Like I had mentioned, I don't run too many planeswalkers. All of the ones I do run are pretty utility based. Kiora really shines in this deck as a permanent version of Explore that I can proliferate to rinse and repeat the effect. People often don't see her as a threatening Planeswalker, so they don't stress too hard when they see her on my board.

Phyrexian Reclamation - Being a deck that revolves around having a big board state, you will often find people will attempt to blow it up. The inevitable death of your creatures hurts, but the Reclamation is a cheap and efficient way to get your creatures back. There is some lifegain built into this deck, which helps trade off some off the cost of the Reclamation as well. Very solid anti-wrath card.

Seasons Past - Another one of those utility green cards I don't see enough love for. So let me get this straight, for six mana, I can gain some outrageous card advantage if my graveyard is stacked? Oh and it recycles itself? While not necessarily contributing to a Proliferation Theme, like I mentioned above, you will often find that your board state will be targeted and sometimes ultimately destroyed. Unlike Phyrexian Reclamation, however, you can get any cards you have lost back to your hand.

Havengul Lich - A new addition to my deck due to his reprinting in Commander 2017. At first it doesn't appear to be a card that Atraxa really cares about. Sure, it's a neat card you could cram into any deck with the colors, but why Atraxa? Aside from being a nice Reanimator on a stick to help get back some of your creatures, the Lich also gets some nice Activated Abilities if you manage to cast creatures from graveyards that have them. This works well with some of the toolbox cards in the deck, as well as various other interesting creatures.
