Midnight Banshee Discussion

elgosu1337 on Another Haptra deck

So it seems like the plan of your deck is to generate lots of snake tokens. I think Harbinger of Night and Midnight Banshee are worth an include even if it kills your snakes, since Hapatra's ability will make new snakes anyway. The Banshee spares Hapatra. Champion of Lambholt will grow pretty big and makes your creatures unblockable. Mikaeus, the Unhallowed has so much synergy with a -1/-1 deck that you should consider including it to save your creatures. Eldrazi Monument and Smothering Abomination should work well if you have lots of snakes to sacrifice as well. Razaketh, the Foulblooded lets you tutor whatever you need. Harvester of Souls and Symbiotic Deployment should draw you lots of cards. You probably need more ramp to cast some of your bigger cards. I would suggest cutting Spontaneous Generation, Myriarch, Durable Handicraft, and Praetors' Counsel.

@lukas96 I feel like you've misconstrued one of the win cons as the only win con; which just isn't true. Sure Midnight Banshee only applies to non-black creatures, but this is meant to be a budget casual idea to build off of, not a competitive net-deck to crush the competition.

There's also a part of me that feels you're analyzing this deck under the light of it being used in a 1v1 format, rather than multiplayer which tends to play at a slower pace (example: 4-6 player FFA).

I agree on the basis that there are likely better options for cards such as Midnight Banshee, that could fill the same role; but this applies to most if not all decks.

Thanks for taking the time to comment back-to-back though!

Sorry about the rather late reply, but here it goes!

@lukas96 I just want to point out that the Midnight Banshee + Kulrath Knight lock out combo is one of the win cons in this deck; assuming you're facing non-black decks. Also this deck is meant to be a foundation to build off of, you make the changes you believe are required for your playgroup; even if that means messing with the mana base!

@DemonicExecuter This question is always hard, and tends to be heavily affected by your playgroup. If your playgroup doesn't abuse flying creatures, you could probably get away with replacing 2-4x Plague Stinger for 2-4x Ichorclaw Myr; otherwise I wouldn't bother with Ichorclaw Myr. On the other side, replacing the 4x Septic Rats for 4x Phyrexian Crusader should be a safe bet in all situations (same CMC, same stats, better effects). Finding the proper card to replace with Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon is kind of tricky, but I'd say 1x Kulrath Knight. I honestly would say as awesome as it sounds, a 2BB Black Sun's Zenith would eliminate 14 out of the 22 creatures in this deck (if un-buffed by Hand of the Praetors); not to say it couldn't work, but you'd have to build with it in mind.

@ShadowFire1 this question really boils down to Contagion Engine vs Contagion Clasp - I'd say the clasp wins out simply because it's faster and doesn't have the potential of clogging your hand as much in the early stages; its a 2 mana Scar that will later be used to proliferate. The 4 extra mana on the engine changes the targeted -1/-1 to apply to all of a target player's creatures, which just feels more clunky than helpful imo.

I second the addition of Necroskitter. Can put counters on things itself with wither, and stealing almost all your opponent's dying creatures is a must-answer effect.

Obelisk Spider seems like another no-brainer. It puts counters on things, and has a stronger effect in this deck than Blood Artist, plus a bigger body with reach, all for one extra mana.

Midnight Banshee could be a good finisher if you find games going long enough to play her. Sort of a nonbo with your Ambush Viper but otherwise doesn't hurt you at all, and combos with both the previously mentioned cards and Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons.

Oh since -1/-1 effects are a consideration you could think about Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons. I have a deck for her Mistress of Poisons. It is worth thinking about because of Black Sun's Zenith, Carnifex Demon, Contagion Engine, Harbinger of Night, and Midnight Banshee among a few others combine with any proliferate effect and you kill her provided they don't buff (note proliferate chooses so it bypasses hexproof/shroud). So many mass -1/-1 effects happen with Hapatra that it takes considerable buffs to keep a 2 toughness alive.

And if you run more tutors than I did you can win turn 3 or 4 with a decent amount of consistency....

pulsar64- Great start to a fantastic deck! I would suggest adding cards that have wither, since they deal all their damage in -1/-1 counters. Necroskitter is a must have, as it is the iconic wither card. Midnight Banshee works well with Necroskitter, but will damage your own cards (Channeler Initiate). But, it will take down almost all of your opponents creatures with it. All in all, awesome deck! Hope my suggestions help, and keep up the good work!

you should cut Midnight Banshee and Kulrath Knight you only play 20 lands so getting to 5 or 6 mana is really difficult.

Suggestions on cuts:

1 Crumbling Ashes (you have 2 copies in the deck)Serrated Arrows (honestly it's not that good. It's slow, and for 4 mana you can do lots of other things)Trigon of Corruption (see Serrated Arrows. These are both absurdly slow)Spinebiter (you could get Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon for 1 less mana and it would have higher power. Not to mention Phyrexian Hydra for 1 less mana as well. Don't bother with this awful card even if it does have infect)Twinblade Slasher is not very good and you have very few ways to buff him to reliability. Both Liliana, Death Wielder and her tutor card are terrible and you can do better than what benefits she offers over the course of 3-4 turns.Core Prowler is also pretty terrible. He proliferates once, whoo hoo. That's pretty mediocre for a 4 mana 2/2 with no evasion, and you don't have, say, Mikaeus to make repeated use of his ability.

That's 8 cuts. You should be at 102 after that and only have to cut 2 more cards.

You should look into Midnight Banshee, Soul Snuffers and Carnifex Demon. Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and creatures with Undying would also be strong options because -1/-1 and +1/+1 counters cancel each other out, meaning you can re-use their abilities again and again for benefit.
