Good day, all! Welcome to the first deck that inspired me to step into the realm of EDH; featuring everyone's totally not insane (at least not yet): Avacyn, Angel of Hope ! The general idea behind this build is to ramp hard into Avacyn and keep bombing the board. In order to do this there is a bit of a pillow fort and stacks shell, ensuring that we can safely cast Avacyn without worrying about retaliation.

Since this is my paper deck there are going to be a few glaring omissions--mostly for self imposed meta bans and price--that would make it run much more efficiently (i.e. Iona, Shield of Emeria , Moat , Urza's Incubator , etc.) so, keep this in mind when making suggestions about the deck.

With all that being said, let's get to the primer!

PRIMER Show

Deck Goals

As mentioned before, the goal of the deck is simple. Get Avacyn on the field and roll face. However, how we go about achieving that can be a bit of a hassle for Mono-White. That being the case, around Avacyn I've built a bit of a pillow-fort/ stacks shell to help us set up, some strong ramp (as strong as white can be at least), and some large threats that will take the eye of counter magic (leaving Avacyn open to hit the field).

Once we've successfully cast our lovely angel, then what? The answer is simple, explode the board! This particular build is packing board wipes of various magnitude (I play in a creature heavy meta) we can use to pave the way to victory.

Limitations

Okay, so white is not exactly the best a few things: card advantage, land ramp, and getting a combo off. All of which are important aspects of Commander as a format; typically, if you cant do these effectively, you lose the game which, in my opinion, leaves White as the weakest mono-color in the format.

However we have a few tricks up our sleeves (or in them) to mitigate these short comings that I will go over later on in the post.

-You hate expensive commanders

-Mono-white is a no go

Our Divine Protection

As mentioned earlier, pillow-forting up is immensely important to pull off for this deck; if we don't we die very early. So, included into the deck are a plethora of cards that afford us some protection:

Angel of Jubilation : She's basically here to stop black from working the way it wants to. Keeping opponents from using sacrifice effects and paying life blocks off things like Erebos, God of the Dead and Greed as well as the more obvious interactions.

Angelic Arbiter : She helps us slow the game down fairly significantly. In my meta, forcing opponents to choose between attacking and casting is huge since most of them run finishers that are not combo oriented.

Archangel of Tithes : Great for offense and defense. Forces opponents to burn up mana to simply block, which stops combat tricks. Or she forces the use of mana to attack which coupled with Ghostly Prison, can be pretty effective.

Blazing Archon : He has a similar approach as Arbiter, he keeps things from hitting me. He is also my replacement for the 9-slot that Iona would typically hold (who I am purposefully excluding since she would be to oppressive for my playgroup and isn't fun to play with).

Eight-and-a-Half-Tails : I love this card so much. He helps me dodge removal, gives evasion, and is super frustrating to play against. Also, he pairs really well with Gilded Lotus.

Grand Abolisher : What can I say? I play against blue players.

Indomitable Archangel : She keeps my rocks nice and safe (which is an absolute necessity for the game plan). Besides, what could be more fun than Boots with shroud?

Linvala, Keeper of Silence : Considering Scarab God and Scion are both in my mete I figured this should be an auto include. She absolutely hoses both of those abilities.

Magus of the Moat : Since I cant afford the real Moat in paper then this'll have to do. It's meant to lock down the Mono-Green player in my meta (although I am considering removing him for Magus of the Disk ).

Mother of Runes : Who protects you like Mom can? No one, that's who. She has saved my Avacyn more than once against target removal, so I'll be keeping her around.

Thalia, Heretic Cathar : My girl, here, slows down the early game. Most of the people I play against use some form of dual lands and she keeps them from getting too far ahead of me in both creatures and ramp.

Aura of Silence : More ramp and artifact hate. Not only do I get the hatebear effect, but the addition of targeted removal can be powerful.

Ghostly Prison : Helps keep people from attacking me. Paired with Arbiter it can be a pretty great soft lock keeping creatures from attacking.

Karmic Justice : Let's just say that if you touch my stuff I'm coming after your lands.

Mana Web : It basically forces them to tap out on their turn. Playing blue and want to leave up mana for counter magic? You'd better not play a blue spell this turn, then.

Teferi's Protection : What was Wizards thinking when they printed this? It is stupid strong; like, the design team must have been on a serious bender when they came up with the concept. It dodges everything. EVERYTHING. I can't really explain how insane that is.

Kor Haven : Nothing like good ol' damage prevention.

Ramp

Another imperative part of the strategy is getting Avacyn out as soon as possible. What better way to do that than good old fashioned ramp. Since there are only 35 lands in the deck (I typically run 37-38) they're a bit harder to come by. But Never fear! We have our ways of grabbing them!

Herald of War : The deck is mostly angels so having a creature that lowers their cost is really helpful. She pairs wonderfully with Archangel of Thune for free counters without having to attack.

Weathered Wayfarer : Let's face it, you're going to have less lands than pretty much everyone at the table. So, why not take advantage of that fact! Wayfarer is a beast, he does such an amazing job at the beginning of the game when people aren't too worried about a little 1/1 that grabs lands while you're behind. His versatility, however is unmatched since he can grab ANY land!

Land Tax : The single best piece of ramp for white. I love this so much, there's just sooooo much value! It combos nicely with Scroll Rack to give card advantage, it ramps hard, and it's a 1-drop, just fu- WHAT!? How did this card get printed?

Caged Sun : Mana doubling is a thing, a very good thing.

Extraplanar Lens : More mana doubling? Yes, please! The best part about this one in particular is how well it works with my land base. Specifically the Snow-Covered Plains I have. Other than being the best land art in magic (fight me) the imprint ability makes it so that ONLY snow-covered plains are doubled.

Gilded Lotus : Perfect for Avacyn's cost. It also pairs particularly nicely with Armageddon .

Herald's Horn : Soo, I'm a bit conflicted with this one. This is the slot Urza's Incubator would sit, however I haven't bought it yet. Also, I think I like the potential card advantage it generates, being that the creature base is mostly angels and I feel like I have enough ramp to warrant the reduction of 1 rather than 2 that Incubator offers. I'll be testing both to see which helps more.

Pearl Medallion : Simple spell cost reduction. It can be played early or late and have a similar impact.

Sol Ring : Yup, this is still a thing for some reason.

Thran Dynamo : More great Ramp. It's typically out by turn 2-3 and does amazing work to get Avacyn out quickly.

Gift of Estates : One of the only white ramp spells. It's kinda slow since all three go to hand and someone has to have more lands than you, but that's typically the case.

Tithe : Has the same issue as Gift, but can be played at instant speed, which helps a ton.

Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx : There are SO many white symbols in this deck. With enough stuff on the field I can cast Avacyn with only it's second ability. Typically this is the first target for Wayfarer (and for good reason).

Terrain Generator : It's a bit of a weird land, but I like it. It has great synergy with things like Tithe, Gift of Estates, and Land Tax.

The Wrath of God

The main reason I made this deck is because of how much I LOVE wrath effects. So, what better deck to play than Avacyn, right? This way I can smite the non believers while keeping the faithful safe from my ire.

Eldrazi Conscription : Here I am talking about wrath effects, but the first card I show is not one. It's not a perfect wrath, but it works in a similar fashion and gets around other indestructible creatures, it helps. Plus the Eldrazi are fairly apocalyptic so it feels thematically appropriate.

Elspeth, Sun's Champion : Her (-2) is pretty impressive as a late game wrath. Especially if she's been pumping out soldiers all game.

Nevinyrral's Disk : A great wrath, although a bit slow, that hits more than one permanent type. It draws removal pretty often, so I feel like it works as a misdirection if I have something else in my hand that I'd prefer not getting removed.

Worldslayer : This card is the whole reason why I made this deck. Equipping this to Avacyn and swinging in to, pretty much, end the game feels so damn good. Not to mention we have a great way to pull it up with Stonehewer Giant and attach it to an unblocked creature, thus devastating the board.

Akroma's Vengeance : Mass destruction with the added bonus of being able to cycle if I don't need it which, in white especially, can make or break the flow of the deck.

Armageddon : A devastating wipe. This will typically draw out a counters spell (for good reason). It's even effective if Avacyn is not on the field; all you'd need are a few rocks (or a land tax) and you're still in business.

Austere Command : Very versatile in it's application. Too many rocks on the other fields? Destroy all Artifacts. Playing against tokens? Destroy all creatures with a CMC of 3 or less. Doubling season got you down? Destroy all enchantments. Playing against mono-green stompy? Destroy all creatures with a CMC of 4 or greater.

Catastrophe : More land destruction? More land destruction.

Day of Judgment : Pretty straight forward.

Hour of Revelation : I was super excited when this card was announced in Hour of Devastation. In commander it's basically a 3 mana board wipe in the mid to late game. It is an absolute power house.

Wrath of God : I mean, it's kinda in the name...

Each of these work really well with another card I've already mentioned, Teferi's Protection . At only 3 mana it's not too hard to cast that in response to a wrath effect and save yourself without Avacyn on the board.

When should you Wrath?

Always. You should always wrath the board.

Other Notable Cards

Now that the major shell and underlying themes are out of the way I can move on to other cards that have made the cut, but don't play into the overall gimmick of the build.

Of course we have most of the EDH stables including both Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots , Sensei's Divining Top , Enlightened Tutor , Path to Exile , Swords to Plowshares , and Return to Dust .All of which are included for their amazing utility. However, there are some others I do want to cover.

A few cards--like Archon of Justice and Akroma, Angel of Wrath --fall into the deck simply because I like the cards. Both of them are favorites of mine. The serve some purpose, but could be replaced with other, more powerful, cards.

Emeria Shepherd is here for recursion in the late game.

I feel like Serra Ascendant needs little clarification. He's a 1 drop 6/6 with flying and lifelink. Unless there's some immediate removal going in his direction he's really hard to stop.

Sublime Archangel and her exalted triggers can make it so Avacyn one shots people pretty easily.

True Conviction and Celestial Mantle are both here for sustain. It's really hard to kill someone who doubles his life every turn.

Godsend will be replaced with Sword of Fire and Ice once I can afford to buy it. Although, Godsend does give an incentive to not block/not attack given it's exile potential.

Mind's Eye is here to bluster the weak card advantage of Mono-White.

Entreat the Angels fills the field with to ton of both offense and defense. Although it's not too great if you don't hit it for the miracle cost, but at least I'd have chump blockers.

Everything else is pretty straight forward, mostly to swing in the late game if the Avacyn plan goes off the rails.

There are also a few cards that I'm thinking of cutting: Godsend and Angelic Skirmisher . I have to see how they're performing in the deck before replacing them, but the plan is to put something better in those slots, I'm just not sure what yet.

Some cards that I've been thinking adding: Karmic Guide , Blasting Station , Reveillark , and Angel of Serenity for their combo potential. I'm just not sure what to take our.
