An Immediate Round of Fixes

Phaetion, 6 years ago

The list was a little rough, so this is more about smoothing the rough edges. I messed with the landbase so it works with what I need more (Like Forests being searched out the most, and painlands to go with World Breaker).

My greatest concern right now is that I want to even out the curve (CMCs 4 and 5 especially), so expect this to get updated gradually for now.

UPDATE: The Primer (well, the first version) is now complete. Enjoy, and feel free to comment on it!

-Kodama's Reach: With the reduced number of basics, I felt a need to cut one card that searches for them, and it had to be this one for now.

-Golgari Grave-Troll: I found that I didn't need too many cards that mill me, so I figure I'd cut one.

-Worm Harvest: In the times that it showed up during testing, I only used this once to get...what? 2-3 tokens. We can do better than that.

+Splendid Reclamation: A major oversight that happens to be a 4-drop.

+Ghirapur Orrery: More land drops and, if we run out of cards, it lets us draw into more. Also a 4-drop which is highly coveted right now.

+Damnation: Another 4-drop, and I can't complain about having another boardwipe.

Cards to switch out

jonny909090, 6 years ago

There a few cards left over from when the deck was a creature heavy +1 +1 deck. planning to replace, Llanowar Reborn, Mosswort Bridge, Defense of the Heart, Debt to the Deathless and Villainous Wealth. I have Captain Sisay, Doubling Season, Liliana Vess, Dovin Baan and Ajani, Mentor of Heroes on the way. Let me know if anything else should come out, or ideas for cards to add.

Had the deck in storage for a year while I partook in some worldly adventures. I did some quick swaps with a fresh brain.

Big Changes

Ares111123, 6 years ago

When I built this deck I built it to just screw around and not be as competitive as it can be. Well then the deck started consistently winning around T6 which is around how long a competitive game should go. So now I cut almost every creature that isnt in a combo piece (Thassa, God of the Sea & Judge's Familiar are the exceptions). I also cut cards that i believe aren't good in competitive. This left me with 12 slots that i filled with extra turn spells, tutors, flexible counters, ramp, and card draw, none of which being creatures. Here's a list of every card i cut and every card i added. Any suggestions are welcome!
Cut: Aqueous Form, Crush of Tentacles, Detention Sphere, Hypersonic Dragon, Izzet Chemister, Jhoira of the Ghitufoil, Oblivion Ring, Propaganda, Primal Amulet  Flip, Recruiter of the Guard, Silence, Tolarian Winds

Added: Brainstorm, Blue Sun's Zenith, Cryptic Command, Disrupting Shoal, Expropriate, Fact or Fiction, Mystical Tutor, Mystic Confluence, Mystic Remora, Thought Vessel, Time Stretch, Windfall.

New spice

New cards get released and need to be tested. Other times, I feel like giving old cards another chance.

Adds: +Runic Armasaur, +Archon of Valor's Reach, +Negate, +Aura of Silence

Cuts: -Aura Shards, -Fauna Shaman, -Timetwister, -Kamahl, Fist of Krosa

Archon of Valor's Reach provides a potential new win-con lock by locking out Instants and then, through Sakashima the Impostor copying the Archon, locking out Sorceries. While this doesn't win on the spot, it provides a rather fast flying clock and denies almost all forms of interaction and tutors from our opponents. It turns off most of the format's win-cons. Archon synergizes with the stax plan and can be played proactively. Vigilance, as always, is a very relevant ability.

Cuts

Burnished Hart

Down / Dirty

Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker

Sakura-Tribe Elder

Day of Judgment

Adds

Approach of the Second Sun

Bound / Determined

Tezzeret, Master of Metal

Clearwater Goblet

Hour of Revelation

Commander Update:

Turns out returning to the command zone is a replacement effect, so Child of Alara never triggers.

My group is casual, so I'll keep it as is. But if your group cares, here are some replacement commanders and suggestions.

Ramos, Dragon Engine-- Be sure to cut Bound / Determined for something more synergistic

O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami-- Good delay Commander, nothing special

Jodah, Archmage Eternal-- Lets you ramp out the more expensive cards a bit earlier, maybe even adjust the average cmc a bit higher.

Decided before standard showdown i'd swap out the Twilight Prophet for a Demon of Catastrophes While Twilight Prophet is cool I don't think the CMC of the cards in the deck makes it worth it. But an early Demon of Catastrophes could really hurt the opponent.

Deck Patch 1.0

GodRedSands, 6 years ago

4 copies of Rat Colony have been replaced for Ruin Rat to allow us to keep some leverage towards attackers. It would allow us to either exile a crucial card from an opponent's graveyard or to simply block with the deathtouch ability.

Bad Moon has been capped out in the deck by removing Secret Salvage to keep buffing our creatures. As suggested by Murphy77, it would be bad to draw a bunch of Rat Colonys and to have to discard them afterwards, so buffing them becomes a better alternative.

As for more buff, and as suggested by Murphy77, only 2 copies of Door of Destinies has been added in exchange for 1 copy of Vanquisher's Banner and 1 copy of Bontu's Monument, which will further increase the power of our rats, even after a board wipe such as our Bontu's Last Reckoning from the sideboard.

Big changes

So the deck underwent a massive overhaul; I decided a deck with 'budget' in the name should actual be 'budget', so I've stripped it down to sub-30 bucks. While doing so, the general theme has changed significantly: we've now got a strong reanimation theme running through the deck, with Whisper, Blood Liturgist at the helm.

Many of the more budget-friendly demons have stayed on, which can be cheated into play early with Whisper's ability. Afterall, who wouldn't want to see Kuro, Pitlord on turn 4.

The fuel for our sac-outlets has also remained largely intact, with a few key additions: Dread Drone and Sifter of Skulls seem like great fodder machines, especially considering the potential for recursion with Whisper.

Many of the more expensive mana rocks have been stripped away, in favour of cheaper ones: Darksteel Ingot, Manalith and Dreamstone Hedron have all been added. We've also removed all but the most essential non-basic lands.

Necromancer's Stockpile, Zombie Infestation, Call the Bloodline, Crow of Dark Tidings and Skirsdag Supplicant will get our cards into our graveyard. Likewise, cards like Final Parting and Corpse Connoisseur will allow us to tutor specific demons into our graveyard. Speaking of tutors, the most expensive card in this deck by far is now Rune-Scarred Demon, but he's just so worth it with Whisper on the field (free recursive tutoring).

Finally, we've got some redundancy in the form of The Eldest Reborn, Dread Return, Necromantic Summons, Victimize and Yawgmoth's Vile Offering. Other than our heavy hitting demon host, we've got a win-con in Liliana's Contract.

Ideally, this deck really wants a few ways to double or combo Whispers ability into multiple activations. Something like Thornbite Staff would be brilliant, but would take us considerably out of budget.

As always, any tips or suggestions are super welcome.

Power Boosting

Lutris, 6 years ago

A year ago, I decided against running Mystical Tutor. Now, I'm adding it back in. I want to power up the deck, and a card which can find answers, or my wincon, is a card I want to have. It replaces Fall of the Titans.

Also, Lightning Greaves are back in. Seriously debating adding Whispersilk Cloak for even more protection, although the quality declines precipitously from Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots to the Cloak.

I feel like I just added Swarm Intelligence to the deck, but its been a long while since Hour of Devastation. Its so expensive, and like the Sphinx-Bone Wand it replaced, tends to paint a target on Mizzix while not providing any immediate gain. So I replaced it with Apex of Power. That seems correct to try, anyway.

Other changes include conflagration being cut for Brass's Bounty. Fireball has been replaced with Invoke the Firemind.

I'm looking for cuts to make so I can add a Sapphire Medallion and a Ruby Medallion. More ramp is good. I don't think I should cut any more burn, so I might have to cut some card draw. Eep!

If I get serious about raising the level of this deck, I'll add a fetchland and a shockland. Until then, the mana base is as basic as can be.

A Cane and a Colossus

sickfreed, 6 years ago

Included the following:

Feldon's Cane Cool stuff. Now I've slotted it in, it can stay.

Metalwork Colossus Works neat with Kuldotha Forgemaster and Myr Retriever/Junk Diver

Workshop Assistant even though it doesn't pull out Sword of the Meek when it's summoned it works very well with the previously mentioned Colossus and Forgemaster, as well as Myr Retriever and Junk Diver.

Took out the following:

Argentum Armor This has never been useful.

Electrostatic Pummeler Too linear, too many minor benefits and not enough game-winning power.

Worn Powerstone Very slow.
