All strategic advice and +1s are very much appreciated! Please comment below if you know of any cards which may be either more effective or more flavorful for the Dimir roleplay theme, but budget, flavor and fun are the primary concerns!

This is my all-time favorite EDH deck, and it is the one that I have by far spent the most time tweaking and laboring over decisions. There are lots of cards I wish I could include, but 100 is fewer than most realize.

Card choices and exclusions explained in this primer I wrote.

Cards With Dimir Flavor (With Watermark/ Mentioned in Text): 14

I decided that it would be easier to know why each card was included if they were all sorted by role.

Thanks for reading! Currently the the top rated Lazav EDH deck on Tappedout, so thanks to everyone for their criticism, suggestions, and support! Please continue to speak up if you have suggestions or comments!

Thought it would be better to remove the foil tags for the few foil cards. This makes the deck look cleaner, and makes the price seem more approachable for prospective builders interested in building this deck.

Past discussion included here.

Your Lazav deck is the reason I've entered EDH, it's really fun playing with it and people like watching a underdog (in a way that's not overly competitive) deck that avoids infinite combos in it's MO. I'm building a Lazav deck for EDH/Multiplayer that's based on your listing, but I'm often challenged to play against a single player and I find this listing to be ineffective in a duel. For dueling, we tend to follow the french list, which takes away the Sol Ring. If you could find the time, could you suggest a few changes directed towards a duel oriented deck, without ruining it's flavor? You would be making mankind a favor.

Have you considered Grinning Totem for this list? It works as a better-for-Lazav version of Praetor's Grasp when targeting creatures.

Activate it on your turn for immediate casting value; on another players turn to search for answers; or on the end step before your turn to get an instant Lazav shift that's hard to answer.

Value and flexibility, in my opinion. (And who doesn't like a 10/10 hexproof annihilator 4 lazav for two mana)

A very interesting deck and exactly what I was looking for.

I'm getting my gf into magic and she's in for Dimir when it comes to gameplay, so I was looking for a good Dimir commander deck for her to start with (me and my best friend are just entering the format, so we'd be 3 commander newbies of which 2 are TCG veterans with MTG knowledge).

However, since she's a newbie and I myself am low on funds after finishing my standard and first commander deck (Mizzix, planning to turn it into storm build over some time), I tried to make the deck cheaper and maybe a bit more accessible to a newcomer. List I made starting off with yours is very simmilar, although I made many changes to achieve the point (some power traded for over 150$ price reduction and more fun/polymodal cards). If it's OK with you, I'd like to make the deck public, while giving credit to you for the original deck, to get the feedback from other Dimir players and to share it with some of my friends in order to start building it soon.

Again, awesome deck, +1 from me. Cheers! :)

Nice deck list :)

I started building the first commander deck I've done from scratch and wanted to make a Lazav deck. Through my research and collation of cards that might work I stumbled upon this one. It's helped me to narrow down my options, cut the chaff and I think do more of what I want it to do. I'm still working on it, but I just wanted to say thanks for sharing your ideas :).

An excellent decklist; it has so many different answers and interactions that a mill deck needs to succeed! If you ever build a sideboard for this deck or even choose to change some things out, I offer the following cards:

  • Mind Grind --> Mind Funeral: You can't set the number of land cards when you cast Mind Funeral, but for 3 CMC it is set at 4 land cards which is superb.

  • Szadek, Lord of Secrets: He is an excellent lieutenant for milling, especially when a large amount of equipment is employed as with this deck.

  • Yixlid Jailer: It may interfere with some of the deck's interactions, but it does block things like Kozilek or Nephalia Academy from undermining your progress.

  • Perplex: This discourages high-cost drops or hand-cycling shenanigans from being a prevailing problem, especially if you have it on hold with the sideboard.

  • Archive Trap: A fantastic instant card that I would recommend to any mill deck.

  • Any of the Jaces: Any version of the master of blue magic has useful draw and discard mechanics that can really rev up your milling power.

  • Oona, Queen of the Fae: Turn over some cards, get some tokens for harassing or blocking. She pays for herself in a few brief turns.

These suggestions all being made, I still think that the core deck is fantastic and you should continue making updates as you see fit. Best of luck to you with this deck!

Thanks for your comment, TimDepp. Milling is more of a side-goal of this deck, rather than an end goal.

I explicitly said above, don't suggest Mind Funeral. Also, I am generally against single use, single target mill spells. So, no Archive Trap either.

Szadek's mana cost is ridiculous, and he's mediocre at best since he has to be able to hit to do any good at all, and he makes it nigh impossible to win via combat damage.

This deck doesn't have enough ramp to make Oona worth it.

As for Perplex, I don't like "unless" clauses on counters. I make the decisions, not my opponents.

I'm also generally averse to using Planeswalkers since they are easy targets. None of the planeswalkers in UB really meet my necessary parameters for inclusion for this deck - low cost, good self-defense, and able to get enough value from a single activation to justify the mana cost. Otherwise, i pay four mana to draw a card and sponge up some combat damage.

Yixlid Jailer is too narrow, and I already have answers to Eldrazi.

Much appreciated feedback! Thanks again.

This is a very interesting deck, I'm a big fan. Gonti, Lord of Luxury feels almost like a perfect fit with the idea of stealing cards from your opponent, but it doesn't look like the deck really has many ways to recur him and get multiple uses out of him so I wonder if he'd be worth a slot.

hey bud! love the theme/flavour of the deck.

I would like to suggest Mind's Dilation, it's not too powerful that people have to deal with it straight away, people see it as a minor annoyance (similar to Altar of the Brood), but slowly and surely you take control of your opponents decks, then they realise they are their own worst enemy! muahahaha.

Yeah you need some effective enchantment removal, as a resolved Rest in Peace or Leyline of the Void is basically gg. Seeing as you are not running green or white... General bounce spells are all you can effectively do

Referring to the "Simultaneously copy everyone's commander" suggestion under "Shenanigans;" wouldn't Lazav be unable to copy a commander if it is put back into the command zone?

June 9, 2017 12:38 p.m.

Entrei says... #12

Correct. It's a replacement effect

Yeah, but when you have multiple clones in a deck, it works.

Have you thought about having the old Eldrazi titans in the deck as both recycle and something horrible for Lazav to copy?

I'd rather keep my graveyard available for other interactions, and they'd be basically uncastable in this deck.

Have you ever considered Crypt Incursion? Was about building my first EDH deck myself with the same commander as you and stumbled over your deck, guess I can save my work now, looks quite perfect what you got here :o

Hey again! Played this deck this past weekend and it's the most fun deck I've played in Magic ever. I was also wondering what your thoughts were on swapping Propaganda with Fraying Sanity. It was suggested by my play group and it seems like it fits in pretty well with the theme as well.

July 17, 2017 11:43 p.m.

ecmmyers says... #19

Hey, thanks for the feedback. Personally, I'd be hesitant to use Fraying Sanity, just because it only affects one player vs Propaganda's global effect. Plus this deck needs a good deterrent against aggro.

Hi, for first i love this Deck. But how do you clone each General simultaneously?

August 1, 2017 2:51 p.m.

ecmmyers says... #21

By using different clones.

Two cards I'm really enjoying are Fact or Fiction and Mimic Vat. Do you find that using a card like Extract from Darkness makes you too much of a target?

August 2, 2017 11:49 p.m.

ecmmyers says... #23

all of those have been in previous iterations, and i actually kinda miss FoF the most.I took out Extract because of the cost, and Vat because it was a bit too cutesy. I needed more removal and draw to get through the early game.

What about The Scarab God, feel like he could be useful here reanimating all your clones and any other nasty threat your our they have in their grave?

August 24, 2017 11:12 p.m.

ecmmyers says... #25

Not enough zombies to be useful, and I don't fancy putting creatures back in their hands.

August 25, 2017 12:19 p.m.

Cycada says... #26

You may have misread The Scarab God. It's basically a u/b Chainer, Dementia Master with less potential of abuse but more survivability. I'm not saying it is a good fit for this deck, but it's basically a reanimator.
