⚠ The ULTIMATE Modern Goblins Primer ⚠

rorofat

Welcome to the Modern Goblins Primer!

Mad at chiefbell for not including goblins in his modern-format-primer? Need the ultimate resource for your goblin exploring? Look no further! After 2 years of careful goblin study (including a GP), I have compiled this as the be-all end-all of goblin decks and strategies.

Let's begin!

Keep/Mulligan?

Now we get to the more interesting stuff. A few things to note for this hand are: A. You lack a one drop and B. You don't have access to green mana. For now let's assume you're playing nine green sources in your deck, putting the odds at drawing a green land on your next draw step at about 17 percent. Personally I think that chance is too low, and this hand lacks the speed which makes goblins scary. In any circumstance, this is a mulligan. I'd equate this to drawing an infect hand with Inkmoth Nexus as your only card. You've got the cards to make it happen, but the odds of it working are low.

Sequencing

For now lets assume you kept it and talk about sequencing. Evidently you have to lead with a mountain, then pass. If you draw a green source, I think the correct play is hold up an Atarka's Command for eot burn and put a land into play (if they try to gain life, burn and stop them from gaining, as this hand has very little chance of overcoming something like Feed the Clan). The reason I avoided piledriver on turn two is he does very little without a bunch of buddies, and I think the best way to get damage out of him is cast + Goblin Grenade in the same turn. On turn three, we'll do the aforementioned thing and cast + Goblin Grenade, hopefully putting our opponent at around ten. Now the best we can do is hope to draw more burn spells.

Conclusion

Goblins is a fun, cheap, and powerful variant on RDW. It's versatile, easy to build and play, and extremely customizable. I hope that this article helped you in some way, and if you have any suggestions, feel free to comment below. I put a lot of time and energy into making this, so if you enjoyed it at all, please Upvote.
Once again, thanks for reading!

It's not the worst idea, but I personally would avoid it. Unless you're playing some weird BR goblins midrange (which I'm going to put together a list for later today) - then it could be good.

February 24, 2016 11:37 a.m.

That's actually one of the ideas I was thinking of trying and where I'd put the card in, rorofat. Goblins feels a little too slow to keep up with a lot of decks otherwise. It seems way too soft to sweepers. You clearly know the deck better than I do, though.

February 24, 2016 12:28 p.m.

'Slow' isn't something I'd label goblins as - it's somewhat weak to eldrazi (I'll have more results around that later tonight, as my friend is going to come over and test proxied eldrazi against it), as eldrazi can get bigger creatures out faster, but it's speed is easily that of burn, if not faster.

However I think a more midrange list could be very good too - I'll get that list up tonight as well (my friend is as much a goblin fanatic as me)

Regarding sweepers - I think that that's where goblins becomes worse than burn. On the upside, once you begin playing RG goblins your world gets a LOT better - your main deck gets to include 12 burn spells instead of 8 (Atarka's Command), and the slow route with Collected Company (or maybe just put CoCo in the SB) makes recovering a piece of cake.

February 24, 2016 3:46 p.m.

Have you thought about Reckless Bushwacker in conjunction with zero-drops or cards with Phyrexian mana, like Gut Shot?

February 26, 2016 3:43 p.m.

I'll be adding a reckless list soon :) it also works well with Burning-Tree Emissary, though it isn't a goblin...

February 26, 2016 4:01 p.m.

I wouldn't call it slow, but it looked to me like it'd often be a turn slower than burn. I may just not be seeing the line of play that lets it win as quickly, barring repeated Goblin Grenades.

RG does seem better. Command is awesome, Company is awesome if you actually get to cast it; I don't know how reliably one can expect to do so since this deck doesn't ramp like most lists I've seen running it. I'd be interested to know.

I'm still interested what you think about maindecking Blood Moon to punish opposing mana bases. I've seen goblin players do this before, and it was hilarious

Goblinslide is a great support card!

And thanks for linking to your primer! I'll add it to my folder!

March 7, 2016 10:31 a.m.

Thanks for designing this primer to help! I made a goblin deck for modern, and though it performs OK, I know it needs work. I was wondering if you would consider checking it out? Thank you in advance.

Hey I saw your post and it's awesome, what can you tell about playing a token list deck using Impact Tremors and/or Purphoros, God of the Forge with things like Goblin Rabblemaster, Krenko, Mob Boss?? with all 2drop guys placing tokens and the engine guys can do something, no?or adding a Obelisk of Urd it can be slow but if paired with burn and 1drop buddies... what can you say?

May 30, 2016 12:54 a.m.

Hey there, I see that the primer hasn't been updated in a while, and I think there is some things you might want to add.

First off, the variant of Goblins known as Gobots, with my list here: Gobots the Peoples. It's a more explosive variant of the archetype that can win on turn 3 (even without any damage being taken by the opponent, and a creature in the way). Thought you should add a description on that.

You might also want to add a section on 8-Whack, as that usually is the intro most people get into Goblins. It's also the most popular budget variant. Thought it would be worth a mention.

The Aether Vial variant would be a good addition too (usually a BR version looking to go a bit bigger, and use Aether Vial very similar to how you use it in the Legacy version). I'm not well versed in that one, unfortunately.

Your sideboard section also needs some updating (I think you know that). Tormod's Crypt is one of the best I have found for Dredge, and other such graveyard strategies. It's also great with Reckless Bushwhacker! Everlasting Torment is one of my favorite additions to the sideboard that I think would be worth a mention. It's been awesome for me.

If you need any help updating it or anything, just let me know!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS! It just has all the great details it needs for a person like me who wants to play a cheep and effective tester deck against what I own already, MONO GREEN STOMPY! I have a decklist on my page of that deck, Go Goblins!

February 20, 2016 8:34 a.m.

If you don't mind me asking, where is the Token List?

February 21, 2016 10:27 a.m.

Do a more complete list of cards with general value!what's the ratting for Goblin Piledriver (3.5? 4? 4.5?)?I want Rabblemaster, Goblin King & Krenko, Mob Boss in that list!Could you consider a list of good lands to remember when doing our deck?If yes, give them a value too (I personally LOVE the Mutavault, but I have a hard time no getting impeded/slowed by it)!

Sorry : first real comment ... might have been overboard... but overboard is cooler than sideboard!

February 22, 2016 11:32 p.m.

@louisjrt I'm not OP, but Piledriver is kind if hard to rate. In a meta of Jund, Tron, and BW Tokens Piledriver is pretty bad. It's an X/2 that dies to everything. But in a meta of Fish, Delver, and Geist I'd give it 4-5 stars. It blocks all day, or can swing for the rafters by turn 4.

Goblin King is a worse Chieftain. The extra +1/+1 is very nice, but the mountainwalk can be useless in a lot of games. It does have a cute interaction with Blood Moon though which could win the game it it hits the board.

Rabblemaster is a little to slow for this deck; And there's a good chance it just gets removed before it does anything. 3 mana is the top of the goblin curve and you really want to be near victory after you use it. Rabble doesn't do anything when it's cast. At most, it makes a token that turn.

Krenko is like Rabbles. Just a little to slow for modern. 4 mana is a lot, and it could just die before it taps.

February 23, 2016 9:17 a.m.

I'm going to do a formatting overhaul lTer today - it looks like the token list was taken down, and I'll add a list of all playable cards with ratings :)

February 23, 2016 9:24 a.m.

I was about to comment until this xD.Is it possible to find a decent Token list?I'd like to look at it so I can get ideas for Goblin Token Aggro.Yeah,I could do it myself, but it would be better if the right one was found by the person(you)who made the primer xD.

February 23, 2016 9:30 a.m.

Ok guys! I hope you enjoy the current version - I'll work on it more later.

February 23, 2016 12:02 p.m.

Thank you so much for putting up a token list!

February 23, 2016 4:49 p.m.

You know, I've been thinking of putting together goblins... I've actually been pondering a list that runs mainboard Blood Moon. Which would make Goblin King really fun, but he still sits in an awkward place in the curve.

What are your thoughts on running hand disruption to deprive opponents of answers?

February 23, 2016 11:56 p.m.

I'm not Rorofat, but hand disruption in goblins is a bad idea. Reid Duke wrote an article a few years back about Thoughtseize and what decks it belongs in. Somewhere he addresses why hand disruption is a bad idea in an aggro deck such as Goblins. I'll leave the other part of your question to Rorofat.

February 24, 2016 midnight

Which buttons specifically?

October 24, 2015 11:34 a.m.

The buttons under all the different headings in the primer

October 24, 2015 8:03 p.m.

Ack, this background is a little too painful. Is amazing & fiery, but could you tone the saturation a lot?

October 26, 2015 2:14 p.m.

Great guide, loved it.Keep it up. =)

November 9, 2015 3:50 p.m.

rorofat how do you configure your page so the changes disappear on mobile? I don't want to turn phones to bricks :)

November 22, 2015 5:07 p.m.

You put all of the code in this:

@media screen and (min-width: 800px)[Code goes here ]

Hope it helps!

Except th [ are squiggly brackets

November 22, 2015 5:42 p.m. Edited.

Thanks! Do I have to set up a style sheet to do that, or can I just paste the code into my deck description and hope that it works? I've done the past it in method on Rocket Science, but I don't have a phone to open it on? Can you see if it worked?

Thanks I owe you 1!

November 22, 2015 8:14 p.m.

How do you feel goblins are positioned now that Twin and Bloom is gone?

January 21, 2016 3:46 p.m.

Neither were particularly bad matchups, however with them gone decks will be able to main deck more life gain and board wipes, so I think one would have to go with a more burn oriented strategy to have something tournament ready.

January 21, 2016 5:04 p.m.

Are you familiar with the turn three goblins list thats floating around on mtgsalvation its on page 124 of the modern goblins thread. It runs chancellors of the forge and BTE as well as the new reckless bushwhacker. I thought it looked fun and plan to sleeve itup for a spin

January 21, 2016 5:50 p.m.

Primer looks awesome! But it's horribly slow on mobile :P I know messing around with the CSS is fun, but it slows things down a lot on phones... Could you configure the HTML so that it doesn't show up on mobile? I dont know if you know how to do that, but I'm sure you could find it on w3schools. There's a way that you can shift the proportions depending on the screen size.

October 23, 2015 7:21 p.m.

Yep, I can do that.

I just added a playing out hands section, want to check it out?

October 23, 2015 7:33 p.m.

None of the buttons are actually working :P page runs much faster on mobile now

October 23, 2015 11:44 p.m.

Which buttons? They work fine for me on iPhone safari...

October 23, 2015 11:50 p.m.

That's weird, must be a bug on my end then cause I'm using safari on iPhone too :P
