jsnrice that's correct!! Harmonic Prodigy would make the first Niv trigger happen twice (i.e., you draw 2 cards), and for each of those draws you would get 2 damage, for a total of 4 damage per trigger! It's a slam dunk in the deck ;)

Of note, all my other creatures are either Wizards or Shamans, so that's just icing on the cake (e.g., double triggers for Talrand, Sky Summoner , Archmage Emeritus or Guttersnipe are pretty neat).

Let me know how the prodigy works out for your Niv deck!

The revamp is better but not by any notable margin - both decks have too much inconsistency to pick up on the differences from game-to-game.

I think you need to work towards getting playsets of your cards. The following list below just uses more copies of what you’re already running, and will play significantly stronger than what you’ve got now:

Hello, I saw your post about the deck and wanted to make a couple of suggestions.

You have some cards I think are of dubious value in your deck and would like to suggest removing them. You should delete the following cards; Thought Scour This card adds nothing to this deck's game plan. Spore Frog . Cut these and replace them with Empty the Warrens . Empty the Warrens can make blockers, increases your storm count, and can storm for even more goblins.

I also feel I have to make the obligatory mention about some of the better turbo fog and storm creatures you could replace them with; Augur of Bolas , Guttersnipe , Sprite Dragon , Snapcaster Mage and Electrostatic Field . If you really need to have a creature, make it a 4 of any of the creatures I just mentioned. But dump the frogs. If you really think fog effects are your answer then cut them for Haze of Pollen . Haze at least can raise storm counts or be cycled when the battlefield does not have serious threats in play. And the frogs would be gone.

Cut Nature's Spiral . It is too narrow and does not advance your win condition. I am also not happy with your enchantments either. I think I see your game plan using them but they hurt your odds of Storming off on your opponent and really only hurt yourself by slowing down your deck. I would cut Gaseous Form for sure. And suggest cutting Abundant Growth . I would replace these with copies of Echoing Truth and Growth Spiral . Both of these cards do the same thing those cards do in the short run, then they raise your storm counts and help win the game in the long run.

Your deck is missing two things that help turbo decks and burn/storm decks. Card advantage and mana rituals. Consider these cards when thinking about what to replace your cuts with or consider making room for some of them; Desperate Ritual , Pyretic Ritual , or Manamorphose . If you plan to keep Abundant Growth in your deck then these rituals have lesser value but I would consider dumping the growth for a playset of one of these or more depending on your card count. They up your storm count and provide the mana to cast more cards in the same turn adding even more to your storm counts.

For card advantage, consider making room for the cards like these; Opt , Sleight of Hand , Serum Visions , Pieces of the Puzzle , Behold the Multiverse , Brainstorm or Frantic Search . Some of these are cheap to cast with a small return but will really accelerate the deck and raise your counts. The bigger cost ones have bigger payoffs for card advantage but will make slower turns. Some other cards to consider are Browbeat , Risk Factor and the blue jump-start card Chemister's Insight . You don't see Risk Factor or Chemister's Insight in competitive decks as much but they are both good alternatives that can keep providing advantage or damage. I would consider adding 4-8 of some of these cards to give you card advantage and help refill your hand for bigger storms.

Two more suggestions that may have a place in the deck; Silundi Vision  Flip can replace a generic island while letting you dig pretty deep to find one of your win conditions. You may even consider adjusting the mana base to make room for maybe even 2 of these.

Consider adding Past in Flames to the deck. This card really increases the chances of a win especially during long games by letting you replay all of your burn spells from the yard. It needs a big mana investment but it can finish a game depending on the state of your graveyard. I would seriously consider replacing two copies of Call to Mind and/or Nature's Spiral with a total of 2 copies of Past in Flames . I would keep it at two copies, it does need a big mana state to really work out for you and going to 3 or 4 copies will hurt the deck instead of help it.

Lastly, consider going to 4 copies of the good cards you already have in the deck. You should raise the counts of Lightning Bolt and Shock to 4 each for sure. I would also consider dropping copies of Fog to raise your counts of Moment's Peace . Generally, if you do need to fog the field it will happen later in the game so the mana cost is not as big a burden and the flashback makes them awesome.

I think I get it now! In magic you want to have more 4 of or 3 of cards, specifically cards that cost 2,3,4 to cast, but when it comes to cards that cost 5,6 or 7, those are generally the cards you have 1 of or 2 of depending on your strategy.

So I would want only 2 Hypersonic Dragon or 1 Niv-Mizzet, Parun but 4 of a card like Dragonlord's Servant , Guttersnipe , or Thunderbreak Regent .

I think want you're trying to tell me is that problem with my deck is I run 4 high cost dragons, but then when it comes to my low cost instants or creatures--there is too much diversity for it to be consistent.

I guess I still remember playing magic way back in middle school, when games were long and drawn out so the goal was to play as many large creatures as possible.

It seems that as you progress you games are so quick you generally won't be casting four+ 5 cost cards, you usually want to win before that happens.

Ex. I probably won't play multiple Predator Dragon s, but I will probably play multiple Sprite Dragon s. So I want more of the latter...

Originally, I had planned to have Nekusar, the Mindrazer as my commander, but then I accidentally found Kess, Dissident Mage on www.scryfall.com lol, and completely changed my theme to a wheel+spellslinger combo deck, which works really well when you can re-cast cards like Shadow of the Grave

I do like Underworld Dreams , however, it is more of a pick your poison if I have Hullbreacher out. My original questionable idea with Furnace of Rath was that it works very well with Guttersnipe , Cruel Ultimatum or in general any attack.

I could agree with everything else, and don't even know if I will throw in a Fiery Emancipation or Furnace of Rath . I do not own this deck yet, I actually printed this entire thing out about a week ago and had some of the cards, but plan to slowly buy the cards for it replacing the proxies. Thank You again!

Wow, what a deck, very creative. I would probably buy it. . . except for the three Mana Confluences, very questionable. I'm assuming that is for blue mana, honestly, just run an Izzet Guildgate instead. This is very good but lacks win conditions, I have some notable suggestions below:) Suggestions:(at least consider sideboarding) Colossification + Fling (will usually seem suspicious in a gruul w a lil blue deck, so wait for your opponents to tap out, and if you want to take it even further Unleash Fury ) Brash Taunter + Unleash Fury or Brash Taunter + Star of Extinction add some counterspells maybe? Dissolve or Cancel Guttersnipe + Dictate of the Twin Gods (note: if you really wanna go crazy, throw in some Shock s, you're paying 1 for four damage lol) Finally, always reccomend Soul-Guide Lantern , pioneer players are mean and very often try to recast from the graveyards, as you will run into a lot more dreadhorde archanists probably, in black decks which is even more scary, given some of the spells they could play.


So that's all i got, like I said, i like the idea of this deck, just take these into consideration:) aslo, if you put Colossification on your Dreadhorde Archanist, essentially you can cast any instant or sorcery spell you want lol

I'm probably not the only one confused with which triggers Veyran, Voice of Duality works with.

603.1. Triggered abilities have a trigger condition and an effect. They are written as “[When/Whenever/At] [trigger condition or event], [effect]. [Instructions (if any).]”

  1. So cards like Guttersnipe or cards with magecraft clearly work (she triggers her own magecraft), cool, no problem.

  2. There seems to be a consensus that cards with prowess and similar ( Stormchaser Mage , Aetherflux Reservoir , Wavebreak Hippocamp ) also work so long as it triggers with an instant or sorcery and not another card type. Ok, so maybe the permanent's trigger condition does not need to say 'instant' or 'sorcery'.

  3. What about if something like Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind was triggered with a Brainstorm ? Does the permanent's trigger condition need to say 'cast' too? What 'causes' the triggered ability to trigger? Is it the casting or the drawing? Same question with Baral, Chief of Compliance .

  4. What about cards that need an extra cost to trigger Lunar Mystic or Mirari ? Do we (or can we, or can't we) pay the extra cost when Veyran triggers it an additional time?

  5. What about cards like Knowledge Pool or Eye of the Storm which also requires the card to exile?

  6. What about Primal Wellspring or Pyromancer's Goggles do you get two copies?

  7. If Runaway Steam-Kin has two counters and you cast a red instant, does it end up with four counters? Does Aria of Flame or Sphinx-Bone Wand get one or two counters? How about Mizzix of the Izmagnus ?

  8. How does Spellweaver Volute work? DO you get two copies of the same instant?

  9. I think that covers everything. If anyone has any weird edge cases, this might be a good place to post it. Do any of these cards not work for some reason? Sunbird's Invocation , Jori En, Ruin Diver .

Hey, well done on a budget for your first Commander deck. I'm having fun with Veyran with Kalamax, the Stormsire .

You have 111 cards which is too many. Cards to consider cutting to get to 100 cards:


Some budget cards to consider adding:

Buyback is the reason that Reiterate can be a infinite combo with Geyser. After copying Geyser with Reiterate you resolve the copy of Geyser first and then resolve the original Reiterate which puts it back into your hand. While the original Geyser is still on the stack cast Reiterate again to copy the original Geyser and repeat. Can make infinite storm count for Grapeshot , infinite cast of instant for Guttersnipe / Ral, Storm Conduit or infinite mana for Jaya's Immolating Inferno as win conditions.

If interested I offer more advice including cuts to consider. Good luck with your deck.
