Unlicensed Hearse

Artifact — Vehicle

: Exile up to two target cards from a single graveyard.

This card's power and toughness are each equal to the number of cards exiled with this. (This is a linked ability, linked to the ability in the first paragraph on the card named "Unlicensed Hearse". The power and toughness of this vehicle are only equal to the number of cards exiled with the first ability.)

Crew 2 (Tap any number of creatures you control with total power 2 or more: This vehicle becomes an artifact creature until end of turn.)

The line between equipment and creatures is a hard thing to get right i think it should always be skewed more towards creatures which i think looks decent here but be careful about this number!

I would encourage you to play more creatures/ equipment that get buffed when you get multiple equipment on it. Ideas being Goblin Gaveleer , Champion of the Flame , Thran Power Suit these may not look impressive but 1+ equipment and they go big. Newer card I have tried Kellan, the Fae-Blooded is probably good but slow.

When building your sideboard i would look at protection/ recursion/ meta based archetype hate. Think Mantle of the Ancients , Blacksmith's Skill , Unlicensed Hearse , Crumble to Dust , maybe look at what other people are playing with a junk sideboard full of removal and graveyard hate for a few times then see what you need from there.

Obligatory simple answer is look at what equipment decks are currently doing good in modern. Stoneblade decks and hammer time. Both use Stoneforge Mystic to find and put in Kaldra Compleat for a quick kill. Stone blade is a midrange tempo shell to support what your doing. The hammer time deck has a plan A combo of putting Colossus Hammer on a creature and swinging for lethal in 1 to 2 turns.

This deck is great! I added 2 Argoth, Sanctum of Nature  Meld to the mana base to add more self mill and built a rudimentary sideboard for best of three:

Sideboard:

2 Outland Liberator  Flip

2 Witness Protection

2 Disdainful Stroke

2 Unlicensed Hearse

2 Gix's Command

3 Shore Up

2 Titania, Voice of Gaea  Meld

I am thinking of switching Disdainful Stroke out for Make Disappear but other than that this deck rocks. Great brew!

I read your whole comment and appreciate the time you took for the write up. I really don’t want this to be a Dimir deck but I am planning to replace a few graves with Misty Rainforests

You’re not wrong in your assessments, having played Control as a secondary deck for years now I’m very familiar with almost all the cards you mentioned.

The thing you said about top decks, is why I used to have Think Twice in this deck over Consider… this deck pretty much never wants to go to top deck mode

Anyway instead of breaking down the pros and cons of the many viable cards you listed here’s where my head is at. I know Cryptic Command is too slow, I have barely ever cast it in any match up. I’ve been using it as a middle ground between the 4th copies of Dismember and Archmage's Charm I’m just not sure which I need the 4th copy of more since both have been all stars, what is your opinion?

Next on the table is Snapcaster Mage, it’s such a legacy card that it feels bad to want to cut it but I’ve seriously been thinking of dropping it in favor of 2x more Consider. What are your thoughts? Only thing that concerns me is cutting snap makes Unlicensed Hearse worst.

I think Unmoored Ego does need a sideboard slot, probably in place of Iymrith, Desert Doom which is only there for testing & flavor right now …do you think Surgical Extraction might be a better choice?

Id suggest switching out Relic of Progenitus with either Unlicensed Hearse or Scrabbling Claws. Poxwalkers, Prized Amalgam, and Master of Death are also cards that have proven to be super good in my Tormod deck although I also have Intuition, Entomb, Traumatize, Unmarked Grave, Altar of Dementia, Oriq Loremage and Vile Entomber in mine. Some dredge cards might help filling your grave. If you ever add fetchlands then I would also add Hostile Desert and Crucible of Worlds. Phyrexian Tower, High Market and Unholy Grotto/Volrath's Stronghold are some other good lands. Tortured Existence is also a must. 1 black mana per 2/2 zombie as much as you want is hard to beat.

Unlicensed Hearse seems like an awesome edition completely forgot that that card existed honestly XD, as far as aggro goes obviously game ones are a kind of coinflip as we don't know what our opponent is doing doing until we see that basic mountain come down turn one so sometimes is a bad 7 to keep against that, but games 2-3 are typically much more consistent wins with bringing in the second The Meathook Massacre, Languish, the 2 Bloodchief's Thirst, and potentially both a second Phyrexian Fleshgorger and Sarulf, Realm Eater as early game bodies to blunt the aggression. As far as extinction event goes is it better than just a second languish or possibly a Bontu's Last Reckoning?

You're probably fine then, how do you usually do against aggro? I think you either main 4 thoughtseize or dont at all, but thats just me, like the 4th in the side seems like a waste. Extinction Event is very strong against mono green and really good vs rakdos. another good side card isUnlicensed Hearse , its good against greasefang and kroxa. you could probably safely swap your soul guide lantern and grafdiggers cage for 2 unlicenced hearse, its just the best grave hate card because it can also become a threat

Rhadamanthus on Unlicensed Hearse and Exiled cards

It would be a 0/0. When something changes zones, the game treats it as a brand new object with no relation to what it was before, minus some exceptions needed to make certain things work properly (those exceptions don't apply in this case). In your example, it means the cards in exile were put there by a different Unlicensed Hearse than the one you have now and they won't be counted by your current Hearse's ability.

If I exile two cards with an Unlicensed Hearse, that Hearse leaves the battlefield and then comes back next turn, is that Hearse a 0/0 or 2/2 when crewed?
