Grist, the Hunger Tide

Legendary Planeswalker — Grist

As long as this isn't on the battlefield, it's a 1/1 insect creature in addition to its other types.

+1: Create a 1/1 black and green insect creature token, then mill a card. If an Insect card was milled this way, put a loyalty counter on Grist and repeat this process.

-2: You may sacrifice a creature. When you do, destroy target creature or planeswalker.

-5: Each opponent loses life equal to the number of creature cards in your graveyard.

Basically what the title says. Let's say I have both Verdant Succession and Grist, the Hunger Tide in the battlefield and Grist gets destroyed. Would it count for Verdant Succession's "when a green nontoken creature is put in the graveyard from play"? The doubt arises from Grist being a creature while it isn't on the battlefield. Does it have to be a creature while in play and in graveyard for Verdant Succession to trigger or just when it touches the graveyard?

I know last updated 4 years ago at the time of leaving this comment. still thought id maybe leave a suggestion or two. before I say anything Id like to say the glissa deck you have seems fun and is very different than mine. that isnt a bad thing i enjoy seeing alternate takes. she is/was my first commander deck i built as well.

Jhoira's Toolbox, by no means do I hate this card. might I suggest Welding Jar. Jhoira's cost 2 to cast, then another 2 to regenerate a target. Welding jar is 0, and Sac to Regen target. the obvious downsides and benefits are that Jhoira doesnt have to sac itself to regenerate. however it is specific to artifact creatures. Welding jar targets any artifact.

Doom Blade, i would replace with Assassin's Trophy. either or is fine imho.

Some cards i would suggest maybe but i dont have any replacement ideas would be, Grist, the Hunger Tide, Casualties of War, Ashes to Ashes, Grisly Salvage, Skullclamp.

by no means do you have to listen to any of my card suggestions as i said above i have no recommendations for what to remove for those cards. just some food for thought.

i used to run Triskelion in my deck i dont anymore tho. Myr Battlesphere is another card i used to run but took out as well. neither of them are bad by any means. i just removed them arbitrary reasons.

side note, it always makes me happy to see Disciple of the Vault. dont see that card too much these days!

Playing either Agatha's Soul Cauldron or using Grist, the Hunger Tides -2 ability on MTGO will both beautifully illustrate how ”when you do” effects interact with the stack.

If I have Umori, the Collector as a companion on a Grist, the Hunger Tide mono insect deck and I activate +1 I will mill all my deck, how could I win with that?

Edit: I forget about the lands sorry but any help it's good to improve my deck, I need a list of all golgari mtg insects legal in comander so I can filter my favorite of them in this deck, if someone have the list I will be very happy, thanks.

1 Svogthos, the Restless Tomb

That's a good base. Take what works and replace what you don't like.

Exp. I've been playing iterations of this for years now and eight one drops are important. You need to start filling your gy ASAP. These are the two best. If you don't want to go into blue, there are cards like Gnawing Vermin but for me, m2 isn't enough. The -1/-1 is helpful so there is some leeway based on META. If I dabble in other colors, Shriekhorn is my go-to.

Satyr's spot can be removed but I play a low land count due to the two modal lands (Glasspool/Mammoth). Mire Triton is another favorite because Deathtouch and gainlfie. It's also a META call. I don't like others like Skull Prophet. If I were playing The Mycotyrant I'd consider it because it 'mills over time' (MOT) but once your opp sees what youre on theyd kill it before you get a chance to use it.

So, in this list I'm 12 goyfs. Eight can self-mill (SM) and the other is useful (Souls) in getting Wonder out of your hand. You can also sac Stitcher to it if you're a T1 Stitcher T2 Souls. Every card in this deck is a permanent besides Unearth so if you fetched at all, you could have a T2 6/6-8/8 Souls of the Lost and that aint to shabby.

I have always played at least 1-2 Nighthowler. It makes those Stitchers, Crabs, and Satyrs a threat and more often than not, takes two spells to kill it (when it's bestowed).

I view this deck as a sort of aggro deck and keeping with 99% creature theme, Grist and Brazen Borrower are my interaction. You can bring in whatever you want (obviously) but it's also provides fliers for Nighthowler, Grist has a built in win-con and protects itself. I always play a Boseiju, Who Endures and if I play more, -1 Unearth for Life from the Loam and if I'm really frisky, I'll add a few more legends, play more of the Channel Lands and another Life/Loam. I've got a oops all Channel lands were all the other lands are Modal and I play Amulet of Vigor with Shriekhorn and use Emry, Lurker of the Loch as a self-mill recur piece. It's fun.

Sidisi is a MOT that can help you go wide. Every time you mill, you get a zombie. I use this in near every build when I'm in color. I've tested Blossoming Tortoise but save that for a Mosswort Bridge version I play and if I can't get that going I want to be able to cast the top end. Shigeki, Jukai Visionary, Molderhulk, Aether Vial + Dryad Arbor help get me there. But just playing the new Squirming Emergence is so much easier than playing all those other cards.

You can find a way to bring in draw, life, other interaction, etc.. it's on you. There are times were I play Jace, the Perfected Mind or Visions of Beyond for draw. Spellstutter Sprite and a few spots for other faeries like Likeness Looter (flying faerie goyfs!).

But that's the base. Do what you want.. because you can literally do anything. I've got a junk list focused on recur with Unearth, Renegade Rallier, Necropanther, Athreos, God of Passage... a jund/grixis list that uses Ob Nixilis, the Adversary and Orcish Bowmasters (sac goyf to etb Ob Nix, Token Ob forces opp to draw 7 for -7 life. Bowmasters deals another 6 plus you get a 6/6 orc token (+2 more for paper Ob +1 if they can't discard). That's a 15 point swing, not including attacks. Another Grixis list that plays Kroxa, Flamewake Phoenix, Seasoned Pyromancer and Ox.

My favorite - game 1, I'm a mill deck that sideboard converts into self-mill game 2. It still deals with the gy but game 1 youre spell heavy and game 2 youre creature heavy.

Anyway, have fun.

IHATENAMES I like the suggestions, but I'm trying to avoid giving creatures power because it goes against Doran's goal. The idea is to have him out at all costs. That is why I have tutors to get him out in Treefolk Harbinger and Collected Company. Samwise the Stouthearted* can also return him if he is ever destroyed. Though that does require holding up two mana, my creatures and spells are relatively low and I have some amount of ramp. Slip On the Ring can also be used to save Doran in a pinch.

Think I will add Grist, the Hunger Tide to Sideboard, though. Just the -2 ability is worth it.

*NOTE: Samwise the Stouthearted can also be used to bring Fetchlands back if I want to have more mana.

Sweet brew!
Only concern I have is without Doran a few if the cards literally are dead draws. Oddly enough I'd suggest something like Lion Sash or Grist, the Hunger Tide janky and expensive but also Cloudsteel Kirin as ways to make the harbinger or grazer work better without doran

jdogz32 the list definitely looks a lot stronger!

My only suggestion would be to ditch Witherbloom Command (or move em to the sideboard) for 3 more lands (or 2 lands and another creature).

If your having lots of problems versus flyers i’d suggest making some dedicated room in your sideboard for more creature hate (2 copies of Assassin's Trophy would go a long way), and also maybe run more copies of Grist, the Hunger Tide mainboard, as its able to kill problematic threats.

Also, Fiend Artisan is probably a strict upgrade to some of your existing creatures.
