Ravenous Demon Discussion

SynergyBuild on Athreos, and His Apostles

My main concern of the deck is the "competitive" tag. That tag would imply this deck is a fully optimized, competitive list, able to see play against the best decks of the format, and still have a decent winrate.

This list, from what I see, is not able to accomplish this.

I honestly do not know what this deck is trying to do, as there was not a primer for it, nor an explanation, but I will look and see, If I am wrong in my analysis, please correct me, and I will apologize promptly if I am mistaken entirely.

It looks like a Shadowborn Apostle deck, that is using the apostles to cheat out few choice demons, of which there are 7 total, out of them Demon of Death's Gate and Ravenous Demon  Flip are simply large beatsticks, and so are basically useless for a cEDH deck, Indulgent Tormentor is the same unless you team with an opponent, and Rune-Scarred Demon is a Demonic Tutor on a stick. Ob Nixilis, Unshackled is a big hate-on search, but the 10 life and sacrifice a creature should barely hurt a player unless they are paradox combo with Captain Sisay or Arcum Dagsson, and so they use a Swords to Plowshares on it or Pongify and then combo off. Harvester of Souls is decent card draw, and Razaketh, the Foulblooded is actual tutoring.

What can you tutor for or draw to win? Not much I am afraid you only have 6 removal spells, and they aren't very good for these colors, no Dismember or anything else really.

Without Mana Crypt, Mox Diamond, Mana Vault, Fellwar Stone, Mind Stone, Lotus Petal, or Chrome Mox type effects, you can't legitimately expect to pull a win with this deck at a competitve table, and your card draw is just horrendous.

At least I would suggest you do the courtesy of running your good tutors, Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Imperial Seal and Grim Tutor (some decks don't need Grim Tutor), along with Necropotence for draw and Ad Nauseam + Angel's Grace for the draw your deck.

May I ask about you landbase?

Commonly, for a competitive deck, the usually 2-color landbase looks like:

Ancient Tomb and Gemstone Caverns (the extra ramp lands)

Scrubland and Godless Shrine (the fetchable duals in your colors)

Windswept Heath, Bloodstained Mire, Polluted Delta, Flooded Strand, Verdant Catacombs, Arid Mesa, and Marsh Flats (the 7 fetchlands in your colors.)

City of Brass, Mana Confluence, Caves of Koilos, Fetid Heath, Concealed Courtyard, Command Tower, Forbidden Orchard, Exotic Orchard, Reflecting Pool, Gemstone Caverns, and Tarnished Citadel (the 11 unfetchable duals in your colors)

Cavern of Souls and Phyrexian Tower (the useful utility lands of your deck)

1xPlains and 6xSwamp

This 31 card landbase is fully tuned and optimized for a competitive deck, why does yours not run the rest of the good fetches, and all of the good duals?

To be entirely honest, I don't think this is a bad deck, and don't want to offend you or your deck-building skills, but I would hope you drop the "competitive" tag or change the deck a lot, it is mis-leading as it is.

If you want any deck-building advice on how to make this deck competitive, I suggest heading on over to Why Every Commander is Competitive and learning from that resource I set up for new players to cEDH.

Hey friend! You sent me a comment on my human/demon deck last year. I've made some significant changes to the deck and have made it much more aggressive. I tried to make Ravenous Demon  Flip work for the last 2 years but unfortunately as much as I love him, he was too slow.

Desecration Demon comes in faster and creates pressure right off the bat. it makes our opponent sacrifice control of the board and Skirsdag High Priest is extremely powerful as well. I feel like me and you could have a lot to talk about on this topic and I'd love to help each other out as I feel like we're both super into this human sacrifice theme. Take a look at my deck and let me here your thoughts.

CommandCast ive made it my life's work to specialize in demons, and while i have nowhere NEAR the experience you guys have (love game knights btw), take out 1 apostle for an even 30, but sub that apostle for a Coat of Arms. Think about it..

Other than that, a Westvale Abbey  Flip would be the final suggestion to making this deck truly ungodly and plays on the sac theme of the apostles.

Would Ravenous Demon  Flip be too much of an upkeep tax? Since theyre going back into the hand anyway

You definitely need removal and some more card advantage in this deck. I would recommend a couple Path to Exiles and Fatal Pushes. Thraben Inspector is just a great 1-drop, Fiend Hunter perma-exiles with your blink effects, Pain Seer and Glint-Sleeve Siphoner are 'great' budget alternatives to Dark Confidant. Kitesail Freebooter has been an all-star in human decks. I wouldn't advise against something like Arguel's Blood Fast  Flip or Phyrexian Arena for card advantage as well. Anthems like Always Watching or Radiant Destiny are always good.

As for your top end, I would splash green for Sigarda, Heron's Grace, run Angel of Invention, Ravenous Demon  Flip, Angelic Overseer, and Restoration Angel are all great.

Replace the Hooded Assassin with the Fiend Hunter, and Mardu Shadowspear with Bloodsoaked Champion

For your sideboard, Rest in Peace and Stony Silence. Collective Brutality is fantastic against control with its discard effect, and is one of the best hosers against burn and aggro. Cards like Fragmentize are always a safe choice. Arashin Cleric is a favorite of mine for faster match ups. Liliana's Defeat and Gideon's Defeat are great against those colors. Duress is also great against control and combo decks. You may need something like Eerie Interlude to protect yourself against wraths.

My apologies. Just play tested your deck and I see your issue. I was playtesting on a deck I have with Ravenous Demon  Flip and it was working fine.

Thanks dzapf2008! At the start I was going G/W because in my head I was like "green is good with tokens and mana ramp" but after some revision it slowly became a splash of green in a B/W deck. It's mostly there for Sigarda, Heron's Grace and her synergy (though I also really like Pendelhaven Elder making my 1/1's decent blockers when they need to be). At the same time, I saw your deck (it's so similar!) and definitely see how Ravenous Demon  Flip, Xathrid Necromancer, and human buffs would be decent additions themselves. I'm almost tempted to pull out Pendelhaven Elder and replace it and Ghostly Prison for some of those cards and keep green strictly for Sigarda. I don't need her but she generates humans and if I want to keep the same ratio of cards that generates humans, I prefer her over something like Thraben Doomsayer.
